    A Very Exciting Poll!
I enjoyed the random responses to my last poll so much that I thought I'd make another one, for people who said they like filling in polls.

This cut is for people who don't like filling in polls )

If you don't click the cut link, you'll never know what fun you might be missing out on.

    Ood food for the brain
Last night I never did get to write as my sister decided to crash out at my place. She actually crashed half-way through watching Doctor Who. You can always tell when she's checking out by her monosyllabic answers. There I was ranting about the general poorness of the Ood episode (which was probably the crappiest Doctor Who I've seen in an age - plotholes aplenty, stooopid anti-Darwinism theories, the inexplicable impertubability of flesh against automatic machine gun fire, general all-round implausibility, the Welsh National Opera in Space disguised as the Ood song (complete with tinkling piano no less!) etc.) and all I got in return was 'Yes, love...no, love...' Maggie dragged herself off to bed after that, but I stayed up to watch the Tour de France, which for some reason, I find addictive and satisfyingly mesmerising. Oh, and just for the record, I was prepared to really dislike Catherine Tate, but she was the best thing in the episode. See? I do have an open mind, honest!!

I'm having fun making contrasty icons. This Daniel image was from SGA. I've got the first series of SGA on pre-order at a sale price, as it goes on sale when Continuum comes out. *counts days* Now that's what I call good rock-solid enjoyably cheesy sci fi! (and not an increasingly histrionic Doctor or shuffling Ood in sight!)

    Larger than chives
Yesterday I ventured with my mother out into the wild with the dogs of our house. Not that that wild was entirely unhabited, it just happend to be a deserted dogclub yard at that day. So, we let the dogs fetch some balls and learn some new tricks. Then we stumbled upon a giant type of thistle as we walked around the area. I dunno much about thistles nor weeds in general but they kind of fashinate me. Especially since many of the weeds that are considered weeds are edible in one way or another. Those who happen to be or have been in Japan might know about the use of the Great Burdock's roots in a pickled form. Sounds very interesting and exciting! In fact, many weeds have had many past uses in cuisine. Fat hen used to be grown for its leaves that where used instead of Spinach, for example, but now the latter is favoured of course.

Well, weeds in all honour, but at the moment I happen to have a few of the ones I would like to have in my garden. Oh, well, of course, I haven't been sitting on my butt the entire weekend without doing anything about these fascinating but troublesome greens. I have made a major cleanout around my garden. The small "greenhouse" is not filled with weeds, but the Parnsip patch was filled with so many weeds I didn't knew what was parsnip and what was. The reason is simple, I am not an expert on the parsnips early growing period. Therefore the amount of growing parsnips can be counted on my two hands more or less. The same with the "parsleyroot", but that's an experiment of it's own. (Just to think of it, I have forgotten to water the plants today, but ohwell, they are doing fine til tomorrow). Most cookbooks says that it tastes more "aromatic" than parsnip. Since "parsleyroot" is rarely to be found in common grocery stores I had nothing to do but to grow it myself.

Come to think of it, there are several plants and veggies which are not available in most grocery stores. Being a person with a taste of the obscure and rare I have actually found myself peeking at the more unseen versions of vegetables at the veggie seed online shops. Purple carrots, fat-hen, burdock, pak choi, kailan, tigerella tomatoes, odd cucumbers, mangelwurzel and whatnot. I'd like to grow them all! I need to know how they taste! How they grow!

Anyway, the rarer the vegetable the harder it would be to find a companion plant. A topic I've brought up before. However, if you don't experiment with the odder vegetables no one will ever find out which plants likes eachother. Simple as cake. It would be great if I just had a list of plants that are unheard of being grown in everypersons garden. Something less heard of is of course companion planting. A little something I fixed yesterday while cleaning out the weeds was replanting a bit of chives amongs my carrots. This is to confuse bugs who happen to like either species. Hopefully it will work

Something that sem to have worked is making a tea out of algeas to use as a spray on the plants. There are finished extracts on the market already but I tried out just cooking a tea out of some kelp I had bought from a health store. Very handy, and the kelp itself can be eaten as a tasty vegetable. I need to find out how to grow my own kelp though. That would be really awesome and a bit closer to the philosophies of biodynamic agriculture. We happen to have several biodynamic growers a bit more south of here. It is, well, very interesting and very tasty too.

Talking about tasty, yesterday me and my mother's actual purpose to get out into the wild was to visit a "school garden" (they arrange courses on ecological agriculture) who sell tomatoes and cucumbers that are expensive BUT worth every krona. Gosh, those tomatoes are ace and so much superior to all the tomatoes in stores all together. I happen to consider that cherry tomatoes have much better taste than the bigger ones but still these tomates are bigger than apples, or close to the size of a jona gold apple and tastes so much! This garden is one of Swedens largest producer of ecologically grown tomatoes. Impressive.

My chards and sallad tastes quite a bit too. Actually plants who usually live by the beach are said to love "kelp tea" every now and then. I suppose these fellas do because they are growing like I don't know what. But they are also growing in the small space of my mini greenhouse. Along with the squash which is actually starting to produce fruits!

    Samurai Champloo FTW!
OK, I finally got to watch the end of the Samurai Champloo series. This was undeniably one of the best anime that I've ever watched.

For those who don't know it, it's the story of three wanderers who end up travelling together in the age of samurai. Fuu is a teenage girl who has convinced her companions to be her bodyguards as she searches for a samurai who "smells of sunflowers". Mugen is a ruffian who fights in an unconventional style with his strange sword and steel soled sandals, he's crude and crass and very much the "id" figure. Jin is Mugen's polar opposite, he is refined, carries himself with dignity and rarely speaks. But both Jin and Mugen travel the same path, just travelling abroad in search of someone who is worthy and capable of besting them in personal combat. Take this classic style samurai tale and then pepper it with anachronisms and rap music. The storylines of different episodes run from campy humor (the two sons of a master swordsmen engaging in a graphiti contest) to tragic drama.

My only gripe is that Fuu spends a heck of a lot of time getting kidnapped (which even the show makes fun of at one point) and even though the core storyline is following her character it seems like she doesn't get to do much. I thought the gambling house scene early on in the series with her was cool, but then they didn't do much with her the rest of the series.

There were two episodes that were pretty much a waste of time, but that happens in any TV series. The rest of the shows, I felt, had some good stories to tell and did so very well. Heck I even got a little misty eyed in the final episodes.

So if you are looking for a cool anime to check out, I'm going to recommend Samurai Champloo. I just wish I could get the series on DVD for a reasonable price, it's going for a pretty outlandish price right now.

    Something Caught My Eye
I just removed a sliver of plastic from my eye (it was very small, like a thick hair). It was really painful when it first went in, then I think it got coated it with eye juice so it was less hurt-inducing. Then it was kind of cool because I became quite adept and moving it around through a system of eye rolling and blinking.

I was going to take a picture to put behind a '"total gross out" LJ cut, but when I was trying to position it into a good photogenic place (right beside the iris) it got to where I could pick it out with my fingers, and I decided that minimizing corneal scratches outweighed the photo op benefits.

So today was a new run. Into the Valley (Nanananaaaa) and through up the bleedin great hill to get outta it, down the road then back onto familiar territory to return up another bleedin great hill at the end of the run.

Its a lovely bright morning, the contacts were in, 'B'Sides Themselves' was on the iPod and the av speed was okay.

    ...and coffee!
There's a one-armed graphic designer rattling around somewhere in Brisbane (in addition to me, that is) and, I never realised how bloody hard it is for her. After being forcibly left-handed for two weeks she has my sincere and undying admiration. Apart from struggling with graphic design software, how does one cut one's steak, or open a bottle or jar?

But, movement is slowly coming back! Soon I may be able to wipe my arse the way God intended (which doesn't involve contortions that belong in a circus). In a message of defiance to my frayed muscles I made this icon today, and tonight I may push my little boat out into very untested waters and tap out some fic on my laptop.

If not, I may go crazy (crazier?)

There may be concertinas in my future. It's written in the push-button stars. *g*

I'm a queue starter.. A twisted queue starter...
Well, we're on the second (second and a half, really) day of Latitude, and I have crept home in my softie-softie manner, to sleep in a comfortable bed and wash. Well, why not?

I was going to update last night, but on the whole it's a good thing I didn't, as I wasn't in the best frame of mind and was talking to the car on the way home. I actually thought the car was running remarkably smoothly and quietly, until i got home and realised I had a sort of temporary tinnitus from listening to bands all evening.

It's been an odd one. Previous years I've gone with my Brother, but he has now forsaken me for more youthful companionship, so i sort of drift from group to group, invariably lose them, and then find everyone's excommunicado due to the lousy reception up there. So I've spent a lot of time pottering about on my own, or with unlikely groups of people I rarely mix with otherwise. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not so. Yesterday was a less warming day. This evening, however, I found a nice horizontal space in the Literary tent where I could laugh and drink coffee, a most relaxing pasttime.

Half the problem for an old sentimentalist like me (some might feel inclined to remove the 'senti' in that sentence)is that last year I met Susie, and somehow it doesn't seem the same this time round. Also I suffer the 'see her face in every crowd' syndrome, because I'm a stupid old git.

But, overall, it's going good. I must take the ukulele tomorrow and scare the children. I must also catch up with some more Book Club, which is always fun, with young [info]martylog on the accordion.

So far, I've seen Deathcab for Cutie (I'm not surprised she didn't turn up for it- perhaps removal of the prefix 'death' might make business a little more brisk) and Franz Ferdinand, who were superb. Another couple of bands I cannot identify today, followed by Seasick Steve, who was marvellous, but not visibly seasick, followed by the Guillemots, who were also good. Not sure what's on tomorrow, other than Interpol, who I have to say I wouldn't mind seeing either. I managed, however, to miss Tim Minchin, which is undoubtedly a Bad Thing.

So there we are. It's an odd one, and totally lacking in either positive or negative bizarreness. This obviously means that I won't have a good Latitude again until the year after next, if the cycle holds good. What on earth am i talking about? i have no idea..

There's a lot of Performance Poets about. I think I will have to become a Performance Poet, and write Poems about how much Performance Poetry annoys me, unless it's funny, and even then I'd prefer it to be read out conventionally and WELL. Which brings me to another point: Why are so many authors so bad at reading their own work? And why are there so many authors whose work is so bad? Political commentary is valid in fiction, but for pete's sake do it well, and don't confine yourself to such narrow and overtly sensationalist scenarios. Anyway.

Donna, [info]frogclock and myself also got in the front row for the Radio 4 programme 'Bespoken Word', which was nice. Twisted queue starters. Tune in, my bellicose guffaw may occasionally be heard.

    day from heck!
Not the day from hell really but close---I went lap swimming and when back at the car (10 AM) the engine wouldn't start. Well the pool is close to home so I only take my keys---no cell phone or anything so I trucked back to the pool and asked a lady if she had a cell phone I could use.
Called dad and he came to get me....ultimately after hearing a lot of overreacting from dad I called a tow company and they gave me a start--went to SAMS club and bought a new battery---the car is now running and AOK....glad it wasn't the starter-took approx 5 hrs total to sort it all out.

Anyhow, to reward myself I went to the fruitville farmers market and bought loads of fresh fruits and veggies and afterwards went to see DARK KNIGHT the new Bat flic...
Really quite good, ....of course Ledger was villainous as the JOKER but Aaron Eckhart was super as Harvey Dent/Two face-not to mention Gary Oldman and Maggie Gyllenhaal-oh and Christian Bale. This movie is done by director Christopher Nolan who did Memento---which is probably why its not just another action flic. Its long but absorbing and not gory...

    Cravings.
In the last few weeks I have had cravings for things that are extremely bad for me. Cigarettes, cigars, bourbon, really greasy food. Bourbon's not that bad for you. Except I thought about it at 9:30 in the morning...at work. It wasn't like "I NEED BOOZE!" more like "You know what would be nice, a snifter of bourbon." I don't understand this irrational spontaneous desire for the fruits of the devil.

most of all though, a cigarette. A big ole unfiltered camel, with a cup of coffee. That is what I want!

    GAH!

So finally the Summer Hols are upon us.

I'm kinda looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to having more time to run and exercise and generally get out. I want to do more biking, and I want to start running with the Small Monstrosity round my gentle park route - he wants his own medals!

We are going away in about a week or so. This may be great or a nightmare. We're going to Lanzarote to stay in a villa owned by a friend of dr.Agon. Unfortunately (or not) this involves us having to take her along as well. For the first time.
Now, I know the kids will enjoy this. I am reticent. We shall see.
It promises to be a not doing too much holiday of lieing around a pool reading and walking and messing on the beach - I hope.
But its me own fault as, as usual I know little or nowt about a holiday we're taking!!!

Then back for a few days and we're off to Devon for 2 weeks with the caravan. Again the Boss has taken care of the booking so consequently I know little or nowt about it apart from she has promised me, or hinted at, that there is some fishing nearby for me...so thats me kind of sorted.
Either way the 'van is being sorted tomorrow to get it ready to go into the garage for a service and repairs to the fridge on monday.

    I really miss the tent...

In other news, I have my contacts back after getting an eye infection and going to the opticians to get re-fitted out with them. I trust my optician. He's a good bloke and an ex-runner and we get along fine. Lots of people are telling me to go online to get my contacts as they're cheaper - I'm really not convinced. I know that I can get to see my optician when ever for all that careful aftercare and i think thats worth the extra a month that I pay. After the recent infection bout etc I KNOW it's worth it!

So there you go, the summer ahead. Any of you with big plans??

    Tending the Garden
I've just come in from tending the garden. In the front bed, I watered and weeded, and tied tomatoes to stakes. The whole bed looks completely full and lush. The calendulas are plentiful with blossoms, I am going to let them self-seed again. The marigolds I started from seed are coming in, and they're rather ugly while they develop, but they are quite nice when the blossom is full. The zinnias are budding, and the asters and cosmos aren't doing anything just yet.

In the back garden I tied tomatoes, and strung up string for the scarlet runner bean and some of the more advanced tomatoes that have reached the top of their stakes already. I also weeded and made a little hose stand so the hose doesn't crush my ferns, hostas, and the cauliflower there. Despite the back garden being a dappled area which never truly gets enough sun to really grow vegetables, the garden is making a decent effort this year. We'll see. Next year I may rent a garden plot from the city somewhere.

    lifestyles of the fabulous
i'm so bad at keeping up with all my friends, but i wanted to let everyone know whats going on with me, because i actually have some news.

first of all, i'm quitting jump planet! i've been here for 2.5 years, and i'm so ready to move on. i have 16 days of work left...not like i'm counting or anything. i had a really great time working here (most of the time) but i feel like if i stay here too much longer, i'll go crazy. i will my alan and all my high school homies! my last day at the planet is august 8th.

august 9th, ian and i are leaving for hawaii! the two of us, plus 14 of his family members (two parents, five siblings, four significant others, and 5 grandkids), are going to be renting a house in kona to celebrate his parent's 50th wedding anniversary. a house full of 15 crazy gauntts plus me should be really interesting. eric, ian's brother-in-law and i are planning on documenting the trip "real world" style. hopefully we'll be able to put up some kind of documentary on youtube. i'm guessing the first of the fights will start in seatac airport, before we even leave washington...lol.

ian and i just signed a lease on a 2 bedroom house (well, duplex really) in columbia city! we move in on sept 1st. we're saying good-bye to the roommate life forever. although i will dearly miss my miz (roommate -> roommizzle -> roommiz -> miz), ian and i are totally ready to live together. the place we're moving into has a beautiful yard with a view of mt. rainier, a garage for ian to do woodworking in, an effing washer and dryer (!!!), and is super super cute. to all you nay-sayers who think that moving in with a significant other will put a strain on the relationship: i'm not worried at all. we are so ready for this. amazingly, mia and jd are being really supportive of us living together. i figured they would want me to wait until we're married, but they love ian and think its a great idea. unfortunately, jim and pinkey (ian's parents) are not too excited about the whole thing. keep in mind that they are catholics in their 70s...wah-wah.

lastly, if you're still reading, you're probably curious as to what i'll be doing once i return from hawaii. haha, good question. no really, i sort of have a plan. i'm applying to be a substitute special ed paraeducator (teacher's aide) with either bellevue or seattle schools. they do their hiring at the end of the summer and it drives me crazy not to have a definite job lined up. i'm torn too, because i want to get a second part time job to suppliment my income. i either want to do behavioral therapy with autistic children, or work at tutta bella in columbia city with one joseph bauer. on one had, the behavioral therapy is what i might eventually want to do full time, but on the other hand, i want a fun job with little responsibility. also, i'm obsessed with the food at tutta bella, and its less than a mile from my new house. what do i do?!

so yeah, thats about it with me. in other news, i ate two hotdogs for dinner, and i'm thinking about having one for breakfast. they are so effing delicious.

i hope all i well with everyone who reads this! we'll be having a party once we move in to the new place, so i'll keep everyone updated.
