Probably an FAQ
I bought a uke in August and I have been having a great time playing it. Suddenly, starting last week, it has refused to hold tune. The  A and G strings will not stay in tune no matter what I do. I will get them to where they need to be, and as soon as I let go of the peg they tune back down. It is literally impossible to get them to stay in tune. The pegs turn themselves.  I am wondering, do I need new strings? Do the pegs need to be tightened? Has anyone else ever encountered this problem?  It's an Ohana pineapple uke, if that helps any- the people at UkeleleWorld.com said that it was a good quality beginner ukulele, so I don't think the problem is necessarily related to quality. Any help and/or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like you need to tighten the pegs.

Ah, that is what my husband (a bass player) had suggested, but he insisted that I ask here first, in case it was bad advice. I will try that!

Turn your uke over and look at the ends of the tuning pegs. There's probably screws in the pegs, just tighten those up. I had the same with one of my strings lately and this is what my brother did, now the problem has gone away!

Is a doddle, as described above... i find that the atmosphere alters it, I left my Mahalo in the car overnight once, and come morning the pegs were almost immovable- the wood expanded with the damp. I've actually now bought a rather nice lanikai with machine heads, and I'm now xonverting all my others to machine heads as well. You can get rather nice seperate plate ones for classical guitars, if you hunt around.

Oooh, that is a good suggestion, too. If it keeps happening I may try that out. I am just excited that I will be able to play again!

Well, I'm adapting all mine, i think. Mind you, I did go mad and buy an excess of the things...

Did you just turn on your heat? My pegs always start to slip towards this time of year, because the air in my house gets so much drier! Tightening them up will solve the problem right away!

That's exactly right. The heat came on a while back and I didn't even make the connection. The tightened pegs work fine now. I am so happy!

The pegs needs to be tightened.
That's it, but not too tight.
