It's lovely having both her men in her flat. A bit cramped, but Rachel's bought a bigger bed and they all fit in it nicely, and now, like this evening when she knows Dom's planning a scene, she's really excited that they're all there together. He's asked her and Billy to bathe, and Billy to dress in his normal clothes and her to put on her leather corset under a dress. Now they wait.

Dom doesn't enjoy dressing in bondage gear himself, but loves Rachel in her corset. He dries himself off after his shower and pulls on a clean pair of trousers and a t-shirt. Barefoot, he pads to the bedroom where Billy and Rachel are waiting, drinking in the anticipation. Billy's face hurts from smiling, his body aches from pratfalls, and he's uncomfortably aware that he's not truly meant to be a clown. He seems to be cast as one, ever since Pippin; the writing in 'Empty' is quite good, and Gregor's a fantastic mate, nearly as good as Dom to bounce off. But Billy'd rather have a character with a bit of depth, sink his teeth into something darker, different for a change.

Rachel's doing lots of reading in preparation to head to Pennsylvania for the 'Lovely Bones' shoot with Peter Jackson. She's really excited about it, and has been pumping Billy for tips on working with the director he loves so much. Having spent the afternoon with a copy of the novel, making notes on the script, she's got some things she wants to run by him, and so is all set to start chatting excitedly when the front door of Billy's flat slams and she hears him come in and greet Griffin, who's barking madly. But when he appears in the living room doorway and flings his jacket on to a chair, she realises immediately he's not had the best day.

Billy flops down gratefully in the sun-warmed sand. Surfing is amazing, brilliant, but he's just now getting the hang of it, and still falls off as often as he catches a wave. The others are still out there, calling to one another like oversized birds, and Billy's just as happy to be away from that as well, here where it's quiet, even the waves muted by some trick of the land. They're making the most of this unusually warm April day to catch a few last waves before autumn sets in properly.

After wiping out yet again, Dom's finally tired of swallowing seawater, his mouth and throat burning from the salt. Orli's just dragging his board up the beach and Dom follows him to where Billy's stretched out on his towel, arm over his face, wetsuit hung tidily to dry. Dom takes a moment to admire Billy's exposed chest and then turns to see Orlando grinning at him.

Dom's had an exceptionally good day. There were no Orcs or animatronic trees involved in their scene, and it felt like there was less waiting around than normal -- that things got done. "Administrative efficiency," Dom said to Billy as they sat slumped in front of the TV after a take-away dinner later that evening. "It goes a long way. If I ruled the world, or Three Foot Six Productions, whichever was the larger, there'd be a lot more Administrative Efficiency."

"No there wouldn't," Billy objects automatically. "If there were, you'd never get a rest. I'm for Semi-Efficiency, myself." He stretches and sighs, pulling a bit of ear-glue from his hair. "If Pete were Efficient, we'd have done only five takes and had no nap."

"You see, that's where Administrative Efficiency and Artistic Integrity have a big fight, and usually Artistic Integrity wins, when Pete's the referee, anyhow." Dom settles himself again after Billy's stretch. "Mmm, I'm horny," he says, nuzzling Billy's neck.

Billy smirks, "As if that's news." But it is lovely to have Dom's mouth and Dom's hands and his lean body and his constant enthusiasm, back from the South Island and randier than ever. It's great having Rachel to stay. When she found out Dom was going to be in LA at the same time as Rachel had a couple of days off filming in Chicago, she immediately begged to be allowed to escape from the cold, and Dom couldn't possibly refuse. They've had a great time, shopping and hanging out with his friends -- not to mention some rather wonderful sex -- and Dom's trying not to think about the fact that she's leaving again tomorrow. Instead, he's gazing at her as she dozes by his pool, carefully shaded so as to retain her winter pallor. She looks utterly edible, even if she's rather more covered-up than he'd like.

The sun isn't terribly strong, just warming and relaxing Rachel until she's nearly boneless. London FOTR premiere, December 2001

It's like nothing Dom's ever known. Yes, he was excited for this evening, excited to be in a familiar place with familiar people, doing something incredibly unfamiliar -- walking a red carpet, with fans and press and an assault on his senses like he's never known. He's only had a couple of vodkas, but feels as high as a kite. Elijah and Billy are hugging him, everyone's hugging him. "The crowds! They're screaming for us, Billy!"

Billy's never felt anything like the weight of the attention they're getting either, screams that buffet them like gusts of wind. "They're utterly mad!" he says, feeling like one of the Beatles. He'd known the film would be big, but this is daunting: it feels oddly like one of the battle scenes they'd filmed. He turns at someone's call, but it's not a castmate, it's one of the fans in the crowd, and flashbulbs blind him as he forces a smile onto his face. "Dom," he says, "some of them know our names!"

It's such a respite from the boredom and despair that characterise Dom's life in LA (not that he'd ever admit as much to Billy), that at first Dom is a bit hyper. It's the day before New Year's Eve. They found this pub the night they arrived, and as it's within walking distance of their cottage they've become regulars over the last few evenings. The landlady now knows which beers they drink and what flavour crisps they'll have. Except this evening Dom decides to go crazy and buys a packet of pork scratchings, which Billy turns his nose up at and Elijah takes one look at and and declares are "fucking evil, dude."

Dom is sitting at a corner table near the fire, which crackles and spits and throws all kinds of sparkly reflections off the Christmas decorations. The tree is right by Dom's elbow, and he's watching Billy make friends with the resident Retriever, which is sprawled out by the fire. Elijah is sitting at the bar smoking and chatting up a local girl, his cackling giggle occasionally piercing the quiet hum of chat in the pub. No music here. This perturbed Elijah slightly when they arrived, but he soon got used to it.

Billy clambers to his feet and joins Dom at the table. "Think he likes you," Dom says, looking at the dog, which hadn't moved the whole time Billy had been paying it attention.

"Ach, he just likes a little attention," Billy says, "reminds me of someone..."
