Pattern Help

  • Aug. 31st, 2008 at 1:51 PM
I am making a knitted coat from Drops Design that calls for 12 sts in 10cm on 5.5mm needles using bulky wool.  I'm using bulky wool (not the one they call for but bulky none-the-less) and I'm getting 16 st in 10 cm.  Am I right in understanding that this means I need to go up one (or a few) sizes in order to get gauge.  Also I have added cables from Elsebeth Lavold's Viking knits - do cabled patterns change gauge a whole lot?  If the do are they any suggestions for how to fix this.

Thanks,
Heather

Sweater Help

  • Aug. 10th, 2008 at 9:17 AM
Just wondering if folks had suggestions for sweater patterns. I have Elizabeth Zimmerman's "Knitting without Tears" and was thinking of trying that but I also want to incorporate the cables from Elizabeth Lavold's "Viking Knits" and am worried that designing and cabling may be too much for my poor brain to handle right now (I'm on call at the hospital 1 in 4 and working MtoF). To this end, I am asking for the help of you lovely folk. I am looking for a sweater with the following characteristics:

  • V-neck
  • Cardigan Style
  • Uses bulky yarn
  • Lack of patterning (or easily removed patterning)
  • Pieces or one piece knit doesn't matter
  • bigger sizing (I'm a 1-2xl depending on the fit)

Thanks for you help!

Space Invader (plush) leg problems

  • Jul. 31st, 2008 at 10:04 PM
I’m working on knitting a Space Invader for my boyfriend’s birthday next weekend. I was doing extremely well until I got to the first set of legs. I’ve got one leg, but am completely stuck on how to proceed to the second, third and fourth legs.

Here’s the pattern for the legs (I’ve bolded everything I’ve done):
Legs
(RS) K 10(5) st, BO 3(4), K10(5), BO 4(5), K 10(5), BO 3(5), K10(5)
(WS) P 10(5) st, place all other st on st holder
Continue with the 10(5) st on the needle, K 24(15) rows

Place these 10 st on second st holder
Get next 10(5) st from first holder, K 24 rows(15) *repeat 3 times
Now all 40(24) st are on the second holder
(RS) K first 10(5) st
Cast on 3(4) st using single cast on
Add next 10(5) st from second holder and k10(5)
Cast on 4(5) st using single cast on
Add next 10(5) st from second holder and k10(5)
Cast on 3(5) st using single cast on
Add next 10(5) st from second holder and k10(5)

From the looks of the picture at Saskia de Feijter’s blog I don’t think the yarn from the first leg is meant to connect as soon as I start knitting the second leg, but I haven’t been able to figure out how not to connect the yarn, whether the previous leg is on just a stitch holder or on the needle with a stitch holder (I’ve honestly did not start using stitch holders until last week with a different project). The only solution I can think of is to cut the yarn from the first leg and leave a 6-inch tail, and do so when I proceed to each leg. Either that or make an attempt to transfer the stitches to a circular needle and try to knit back and forth on it.

I’m not quite sure if this is because I’m sick today or if it’s because I’ve been knitting so much lately that I have brain farts on a project every other day. I get the feeling the answer to my problem is really obvious but I’m too out of it right now to think of it.
Alrighty, I haven't posted here in a while so I thought I should show you some stuff that I've been making, and I just recently became un-broke enough to buy some yarn, which I did, now I want pattern suggestions

Using circular needles instead of DPNs?

  • May. 13th, 2008 at 12:07 AM

In a nutshell, my biology teacher is having a baby boy soon and as a gift, I wanted to knit the baby a DNA model toy.

The pattern calls for DPN's but I'm pretty unfamiliar with them for now, so I was wondering if it would be possible to knit with circular needles instead.

I'm still pretty new to knitting, but I've seen some patterns that allow for the use of either type of needles. I looked around for an answer but wasn't able to get a clear yes or no.

As a side note, I also wanted to knit a Binary Scarf. but this also calls for DPNS, but because it is a scarf, could you not just use flat needles?

Just wondering.

...and yes, yes I am a dork.

Sock Heels

  • Jan. 26th, 2008 at 12:31 PM
I was looking at some handmade socks my aunt has and one has a very interesting heel. Instead of the standard "stripey" look I associate with sock heels, this one looked almost crosshatched. While I'm sure I could puzzle this out on my own, has anyone seen this style of sock heel and if so, do you have a pattern for it?

SnB Nation pattern

  • Dec. 20th, 2007 at 10:25 PM
I feel really lame for asking this, but could anyone possibly type up or scan me the pattern for the union jack mohair sweater from stitch n'bitch nation? I thought I had packed it in my bags but I guess I left it at my apartment... I don't need the chart though, since I'm going to make stripes instead.

I'd try and make this a post with pictures, cause we all love pictures, but my camera was stolen :(

TIA! ♥

Book Question!

  • Nov. 15th, 2007 at 10:58 AM
Long time lurker, here to ask some questions.

I've been using the same book that I picked up for three dollars five years ago to teach myself to knit (Knitting for Dummies--it was cheap!) and decided that even though there are great free resources on the web, it's time to expand my knitting library.  I'm looking for people's recommendations on the following type of books:

1) General knitting books;
2) Technique books (ie, book that has info on specific technique such as cables or fair isle and patterns)
3) patterns of one type (ie, socks, sweaters, mittens)
4) miscellanous knitting books

Please include the following info (book, author, year published) and why you think that your book is teh alsome.

also, am on ravelry finally as auraline.  Add me if you'd like.  I need knitting friends!

EDIT:  Thanks to everyone for great suggestions on books and websites!

Pattern Collection

  • Nov. 14th, 2007 at 4:07 PM
I've noticed alot of posts have been from newbies asking how to do this, where to find that, etc. So this is a chance for newbs and non-newbs to give back to the community. So for all you making ____(insert item here: socks, sweater, hat, anything)___ for the first time...

What pattern did you use? (please provide link or reference)
And for those who have been there, done that,
Do you remember what patterns you used to learn new techniques from? (knitting in the round, DPN, magic loop, cables, lace, etc)
Or Are there any patterns that you swear by and use over and over?
Any other memorable patterns you want to share?

This collection would be useful for all other beginners/advanced beginners to refer to when they feel like taking their knitting to the next level. You can also direct new knitters to here as well. It might also prevent knitter's block - like writer's block but with what project you should attempt next. I have alot of ideas but how to choose one that you won't run into a major problem with?

I think I'm in a phase of my knitting where I want to just try sooo many things and I don't want to flood the knitting communities with a whole bunch of repetitive, boring questions - which I might do anyways.
Hopefully you all agree this can be useful and contribute something.
If not, be sure to let me know and I will take the appropriate action. (Delete)

Thanks.

Here's my contribution (limited b/c I am at work) )

Naughty Needles

  • Oct. 17th, 2007 at 3:09 PM
I saw this book on amazon... It looks interesting, so I decided to find out more about the actual stuff in it.  I'm still not sure, because I've seen a few of these patterns before (like bikinis??) but I found this on the flicker site of the author.
I'm not much into novelty knitting, but it's hilarious and would make a great costume.

**actually, I'm not sure what patterns from the outtakes are in the book, but I really like the bunny and wolf costumes.

Scarves

  • Dec. 6th, 2006 at 9:35 AM
Ok so the past few days have been really hard for me (see personal journal for details) and I want to make gifts for the people who are helping me out more then they understand they are.

A friend of mine who I haven't actually seen in over years said he would take in my two cats on unbelieveably short notice after my parents gave me two days to find a new home for my kitties or they'll take them to the pound/have them put down. In less than 24 hours of sending an email out he responded saying he and his roommate would take them in his house.

I'm just trying to think of really speedy, really nice gifts for them. I was thinking scarves, but then what pattern? They're both just graduated/just got out in the real world/but still their old fratboy selves (but the nice nonskanky fraternity type).

I'm looking myself, but I thought I would ask here this plethora of knitting knowledge and advice. If anyone has or has made anything super easy and speedy thats still nice, if its a scarf or some other wonderful idea that would be the awesomest.

Thank You Muches!!!!

So theres this sweater I want to make I found on a pattern website.  The simple solution would be to buy the pattern and the yarn and then get to knitting.  The catch is that the site only sells to yarn stores, or at least this part of it does, and none of my LYS's have the pattern or even carry that brand anymore.

I was thinking what the heck, it looks easy enough I'll whip it up myself.  So if anyone knows where I can get a simple ribbed pullover sweater pattern it would be greatly appreciated.  I was thinking of just taking a basic long sleeve t shirt pattern and fitting my design to that too, but no idea of how much yarn I might need.  I was thinking of using either the shine worsted or sport, or swish superwash (machine wash is thumbs up) from knitpicks, but if you think another yarn might work better I would be open to suggestion.

Any help you guys could give me would be the awesomeness.

Tiny Cables

  • Sep. 13th, 2006 at 11:06 AM
Hello all!

I'm newish longtime lurker first time poster.  In the past few days I have been searching for numerous scarf patterns and in my searches I came across an article online on how to make tiny cables without cable needles.  The cables looked like they were just one stitch wide and I think they were just made by knitting or purling the second stitch from the end of the needle, then the first one.  I'm not sure though.  I would look at the article again, but this is where my problem is, I can't find it.

I thought the article was on knitty, but I didn't have any luck finding it there.  I also spent alot of time looking at the patterns on knittingpatterncentral.com for scarves.  I checked my history but the page isn't in there, when I view so many pages the browser has a tendancy to lump them all together and just link the main .com page.  I think the link to the article (not the title) was something like "Squee!  Tiny Cables!"  If anyone has seen an article like this in their own searches, a link would make my day!

Many Thanks in advance!

Elephant pattern request

  • Jun. 24th, 2006 at 12:49 PM
Hello all!

I tried searching for this myself, both on Google and through this group, but the search function in this group doesn't seem to work.  Which is why I'm asking all of you lovlies!

Does anyone have a great pattern for a knitted elephant?  It's something I actually want to make for school.  I've found a few out there, but none of them are quite to my liking.  I'm hoping someone out there has found a nifty pattern they can recommend.

Thanks in advance!

Ah, Fall.

  • Sep. 7th, 2005 at 3:54 PM
As a girl who wears a lot of boy clothes (I'm 5'10 and not small by any means), I'm really interested in this latest edition of Knitty, especially Baseball. I've picked up a crapload of Pakucho Organic Cotton (which is on sale for $3/skein) from Elann, and plan to make Baseball, EXCEPT, I would friggin LOVE to make this into a hoodie with a zipper front and pockets. Has anyone run across a site that shows how to modify patterns, especially adding a hood onto something? I have SNB & SNBN, which both have decent descriptions of making patterns your own...or maybe I can just quit being a lazy bastard and spend some time writing out a new pattern...I was also contemplating just finding a simple hoodie pattern and working from that instead of the Baseball pattern and just making the different colored sleeves. If anyone knows of a decent hoodie pattern, that would be great, as well.

It is getting fall-like here, which means time to start knitting every night again ;-)
