Knitting podcasts?

  • Jun. 28th, 2008 at 6:29 PM
Can anyone recommend any good knitting podcasts? I've been getting into podcasts lately because I need something to listen to while at work and it's been kind of hard for me to weed out what may be good just using ITunes.

Okay, I've searched Ravelry, and the web, and I'm just not liking what I'm finding tonight.  So I'm taking a poll...what does everyone think I should make with this yarn that I bought tonight?  (I got five balls of this really pretty red shade that I'll probably never wear, to be perfectly honest, because it was on sale for $1 a ball and I had $5 left to my name and somehow yarn outweighed dinner.)  Yarn always outweighs dinner.

So here are the options, as I've narrowed them down a bit:
Seafoam Shawl http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/seafoam-shawl-2#
Mia Shrug http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mia-shrug
Luna Moth Shawl http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/luna-moth-shawl
Kiri http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kiri
Branching Out http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/branching-out
Pink Fuzzy Wrap http://www.ravelry.com/projects/lipizzanknitter/victorian-ruby

I know, I should be an independent knitter and make my own choices, but if you check out my queue you'll see that I have a lot of things planned that I'm going to make, when I get around to it, and a stash that's making me insane, and I can't narrow it down and actually start working on any one thing.  So right now I have a million things on my needles, a million things waiting to go on needles and a million more balls of yarn waiting to cast on. We'll see what happens.

Summer Fun and free pattern ideas

  • Jun. 22nd, 2008 at 6:12 PM
  Hey everyone!

I'm not taking any classes this summer so when I'm not playing Xbox (feel free to add me!  Gamertag: DeSilver Girl08 ), I'm knitting!

First thing I decided to make was a needle cozy. Now I don't have to constantly dig through my bag to find all my needles.

*Forgive the poor photo quality, I used my phone instead of my digital for these*

which is better?

  • May. 13th, 2008 at 3:55 PM
I am going to make this hat, and I was wondering if it would be best to use the figure 8 cast-on like suggested, or the knitty magic cast-on? I believe the magic cast-on is used mostly for socks, but would it be used in this case as well? or do I stick with the often loose figure 8?

Using circular needles instead of DPNs?

  • May. 13th, 2008 at 12:07 AM

In a nutshell, my biology teacher is having a baby boy soon and as a gift, I wanted to knit the baby a DNA model toy.

The pattern calls for DPN's but I'm pretty unfamiliar with them for now, so I was wondering if it would be possible to knit with circular needles instead.

I'm still pretty new to knitting, but I've seen some patterns that allow for the use of either type of needles. I looked around for an answer but wasn't able to get a clear yes or no.

As a side note, I also wanted to knit a Binary Scarf. but this also calls for DPNS, but because it is a scarf, could you not just use flat needles?

Just wondering.

...and yes, yes I am a dork.

Quick question

  • May. 4th, 2008 at 12:54 PM
I've finished all the animal squares in my animal baby blanket, and a technique that was suggested to me by my LYS lady was to knit over the existing work in other colours for little bits?

What is that technique called, and where can I find a tutorial?

Or am I just crazy prego and not listening?

btw, for anybody interested in seeing the work so far, it's on my ravelry page.

curling green gable

  • Apr. 28th, 2008 at 9:09 AM
I'm partway through knitting green gable (second time around, first time around it was too big!). anyway, in my haste to cast on for this project (again) i completely ignored the cast-on they told me to do, and did the one i do for all projects unless they state otherwise.
my problem is this: the edges around the neck are curling up.
is there a basic pick up stitch i could add on at the end, or should i crochet (i can do single crochet) a border around to stop it from curling. i really don't want to rip it out again.
thanks in advance.

Sweater Help?

  • Mar. 2nd, 2008 at 10:05 PM
I'm about to shape the shoulders of my first sweater. I had originally asked for a bit of help at a lys, but the lady there was alone and busy and kind of condescending, so her advice didn't really stick.

I need to understand what I need to do here.

The pattern says:

"shape shoulders: BO 17 sts beg next 2 rows, then 17 beg foll 2 rows - 40 sts"

So, does this mean I bind off my first 17, knit the rest of the way up to 17 remaining, and bind those off.. and then start the next row by binding off 17, knitting until 17 left, and binding off those 17?

Also, I've been working in st st. The next row I have is a purl row, so I assume that if the above is correct, I'd be purl binding off, and then the next row, knit binding off?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

WIP - baby booties

  • Feb. 14th, 2008 at 11:56 AM
I've been kind of abusing you guys for help, but you're all really good, so... :)

The sweater for me has been put on hold until I can go to my LYS, and I have resumed a pattern for baby booties, again, from the same book.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2407/2249015266_662c0aac60.jpg?v=0

I have completed part of the bootie without any problems, but I have run into an area of the pattern which directs to pick up stitches -- the only problem is, I'm not sure which side of the work I should be picking the stitches up from.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2100/2265356298_35bbbf0ce7.jpg?v=0

From the pattern: slip 9 sts from the first holder to the same needle as the instep sts. join double strand of yarn and k across these 9... (done) ...then pick up ahd k10 sts along side edge of instep (with RS facing);

and here is where the WTF lies. Here's a picture showing which part is the instep. Perhaps someone can let me know which side of the instep I should be picking the stitches up from.

Sorry for being difficult :P This is the first place I go to when I want advice, and there were no past posts that I could find about this particular problem.

(might cross post this to ravelry too, just in case someone there might know)

First sweater, but stuck on the gauge

  • Feb. 11th, 2008 at 10:30 AM
Hi everybody,

I'm about to start my first sweater. It's the Turtleneck Sweater patter in Teach Yourself Visually Knitting book by Sharon Turner.

I couldn't find Cascade yarn for the pattern, which it called for, but I found this lovely Berroco Peruvian Highland yarn. The lady at the shop was awesome. She helped calculate the proper number of skeins I need for this project, but here in lies the problem:

The pattern shows the gauge as 13sts and 22rows over stockinette, but does not say whether or not it should be 4 inches. Is it always 4 inches? Sometimes, on ravelry, the pattern calls for a gauge over 2 inches, but I thought it was always 4.

When I knitted the test square, it was 2.5 x 3 inches.

If it IS supposed to be 4 inches, what is the best way to compensate for the gauge of this yarn and my needles? Would it be to change the needles, adjust the number of stitches per inch, or what?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

A new store in the Pacific Northwest.

  • Feb. 10th, 2008 at 10:51 PM
YARNIA! A DIY yarn store. Yum. The thing I am really liking about this is the implication that pricing is going to be something better than your average LYS designer yarn price. I can live with that!

Hopefully, for those that do not live in this area, they will be doing some web business.

Knitting frenzy

  • Jan. 28th, 2008 at 3:24 PM
I just joined this community and thought I should post a few things...  I have only been knitting for just over a year, so most of the pictures are of scarves, but quite a variety.
For those interested, here are links to the knitted
scarves and other projects of last year, plus January of this year.
Currently, I am home for a snow day. I am trying to get caught up on all of the things that crafting has distracted me from in the last month...

Help with a pattern

  • Dec. 28th, 2007 at 4:02 PM
Hi there, new knitter (6 mos. now), trying to move beyond scarves but haven't just yet.....

I was checking out the pattern for the Irish Hiking Scarf and since this will be my first or second attempt at cabling (depending if I put this before a scarf for myself) and I noticed the pattern only has 'C6F' in the pattern, but no mention of 'C6B', which I'd assume is needed, right? Would I just repeat rows 1-7 after I finish 8, and repeat 8, but do C6B where it says C6F?

Also, second question: I plan to make this into a shawl instead of a scarf, basically doing two cables along each edge, with stockinette in between. Any recommendations on width/length for a shawl, or should I just test it on myself as I go along? TIA!!!

FO and WIP

I have been meaning to post a couple pictures, but didn't bring a camera. As luck would have it, Megnut gave nymph her old digital camera as a christmas present, so we are cameraed again. It is being quirky (will not format and write to a new card, so that may have been the reason for the hand-me-down), but nymph is thrilled and doesn't even know it was used. Anyway, on to the pictures.
