which is better?
I am going to make this hat, and I was wondering if it would be best to use the figure 8 cast-on like suggested, or the knitty magic cast-on? I believe the magic cast-on is used mostly for socks, but would it be used in this case as well? or do I stick with the often loose figure 8?

Any time you want an elastic edge (socks, hats, gloves) I would shy from the figure 8 cast on.

I'm not familiar with the magic cast-on, but looking at the pictures, any cast-on you'd use for a toe-up sock should work for this hat.

I love the magic cast on, I used it for my cell phone cozy, and it's seamless- it just looks like a piece of knit fabric was folded in half. I want to marry it.

Whichever you are most comfortable with.

The magic cast-on would work just fine in this instance, so feel free to substitute it if you prefer it.
