And, lo, the weekend draws to a close

Saturday was fun, to a certain point. Sandra & I had thought to try doing 'something' this weekend and going to the Valley seemed a good idea. The weather, however, threatened not to co-operate. We went anyway and things went well. The problem with going there is that it's an hour's drive and we're running out of reasons to go. Sure, Hennigars makes awesome fudge...but with gas prices the way they are, it's a bit of a haul just for fudge. We ended up visiting Grand Pre, first time in, oh, 20 years?

Mamma Mia!

Went last night with my Mom to go see Mamma Mia. Totally awesome film/musical. Great energy, and omg but Meryl Streep is awesome! The cast was clearly having a ton of fun - especially during the bit that runs under the first half of the credits! (Now I need to buy that soundtrack and some ABBA cds...)

I finally realized that the quote my 3rd grade teacher Carolyn gave me on a card at the end of the year was actually a paraphrase of an ABBA song. That quote got me through the next 5 years, and parts of high school. What she wrote was "If you can see the magic in a fairy tale, you can face the future." Strange world of mine.

Mom and I got to talking about 60s/70s fashion (based on my question "did people really wear that?") and she mentioned that she went out dancing to music like ABBA and wore a miniskirt that only went "to here". I know my mom was fashionista then (as well as now), there's a great B&W photo of her in a bowling alley wearing blue jeans and this little top that shows all her belly. I could never wear either a mini or that kind of shirt. But I was thinking... most of the 'sex symbols' that I'm aware of from that era were Women, not women who looked like teenagers. I mean, they had butts and thighs and stuff. None of this pipecleaner legs and no stomach thing (unless you count Twiggy, which I don't). Am I right on this, that people wanted to be skinny, but not as crazy-skinny as they do now? Or is it a romanticization of the past?

the touch, I have it

I finally got to sit down and watch the first episode of season five of Project Runway. The first guy that jumped out at me was Jerry the Asian.

Hi, I'm an angry azn.

I mostly wanted him to win because I thought he might be Bobby Lee's dad:

I LOVE BOBBY LEE.

Since I immediately wanted him to win, he screwed his challenge and was auffed. Well hell.

Well, I've finally finished Avatar.

I have no coherent comments, so you'll have to do with squeeing. Just imagine one of Sokka's incoherent expressions of emotion.

So what did *you* do on the hottest day of the summer thus far?  Oh, you stayed in your air conditioned house?  Or you went to the movies and sat in a theatre that is so cold, polar bears get on uncomfortable?  Oh, that's neat.

Me?  I worked in the blazing sunlight, on a black metal float, and then did some nice aerobic(ish) climbing to finish the day off.  Kinda like how I spent six hours on Friday.  Then I came home to my un-air-conditioned, not-very-well-ventilated apartment, took about six showers, and tried to sleep.

So, yeah, I kinda spent today feeling like a flipped breaker switch, and trying to find the reset button.  Urgh.

(Three days til Falcon Ridge!)

(On the plus side -- WE LEFT THE DOCK!  First daysail of the year!  Yeah!)

The Dark Knight

I just responded to zuzufool's post about the movie, so you can see what I thought if you're interested.

There's a quick review on Chicagoist, but I think the cooler thing I found on that site was the map and list of all shooting locations.

Weekend recap

Friday was not much of a day, in spite of being off work.  I had a migraine.  But I did manage to do some chores, and watched Surf's Up, which was really cute.

Saturday was chores and puttering.  We watched Next with Nicholas Cage, which was good.  Also?  Jessica Biel? Humminahummina,  Rowr, and Yeah, Baybee!  Himself and I agree on that one.

Today was minor puttering, no real chore-doing, but we went to see Wall-E, and had dinner at Longhorn Steakhouse.  Wall-E was so cute--but in spite of being warned about blubbering, I didn't do more than shed a few tears at the end.

I talked to my boss again Thursday about how under-utilized I am and how nervous that made me, given the gloomy economic environment in our industry  and the economy in general.  She assured me she would find me more to do, that she needs me, and that her boss would have no idea of the spare time I have on my hands.

So tonight, I will relax and try to prepare for the week ahead.

Ed's only been gone 3 hours, and I am bored already. Or maybe just acutely aware of my empty house.

Dangit, Seattle. You have everything I want.
