Puerh found at Big Lots
I dropped into my local Big Lots today and imagine my surprise when I found Puerh tea Cookies!

The other flavors are Green tea and Oolong. They are flavored with Puerh tea powder and Puerh tea essence, whatever that is.
The manufactureres website is listed as www.byrdcookiecompany.com
Haven't tried them yet- will report back later when I have the chance.

Even if they turn out to be terrible, at least the boxes are pretty!

did there happen to be a box with a red bird on it?
dorodango[info]dorodango on May 7th, 2008 08:42 pm (UTC)
No, these seem to be the only three flavors available at my store, but according to the package there is indeed a 'Red' tea flavor, so that might have the bird on it.

Are these creatures air, earth, fire and water?

well, technically those four elements are connected to the four creatures. but the four creatures make up four major constellations and have a large role in chinese astronomy and artistic culture. it is rare for one of them to be left out.

That makes sense. If I get back to the store I'll poke around the foods section some more and see what I can find, but I don't hold much hope.

OK, I opened up and tried the Puerh cookies after dinner.
Inside the box, each cookie is individually sealed in its own mylar envelope.
The cookies look like the picture on the box with one difference- the cookie is peppered with tiny fragments of black tea leaf. It looks like somebody opened up a tea bag and mixed it into the cookie dough.

Tastwide it's a nice shortbread with *something* more to it. If I hadn't known the additive was puerh, I don't think I would have guessed tea right off. The opening flavor is almost like coconut.

Afterwards there is a definate lingering flavor of tea in the mouth, but only after the cookie flavor and sweetness has started to clear away. There is also a slight pepperiness along the sides of my tongue. Suprisingly pleasant.

Reading the box, these cookies are labled 'Made in China' and the ingredients list is
Wheat flour, Clarified Butter, Sugar, Eggs, Puerh tea powder, Baking soda, Puerh tea essence, Ammonium Bicorbonate, salt.

Anyone want to try a couple? I'll drop a couple in an envelope and mail them to anyone who wants to 'review' them. I can send out 5 two cookie samples. (Continental U.S. only please. I don't have time to deal with international mail.)
I'll set up a screened post in my journal- leave a comment with the address you'd like them sent to and I'll send them off to the first five responders.

Please give me a couple minutes to set up the screened post.

Tea Cookies
Here are some more photos for y'all. My local Big Lots had several cases of each type in stock, so I think there's plenty to go around.

Like dorodango said, they're all very sweet shortbread type affairs with just a hint of something else. You kinda need to use your imagination to consider it a tea flavor 'tho.

In the close-up, you can see all four essentially look the same except for some variation in the darkness depending on what part of the oven they went through. Left to right on the plate is the green, oolong, red and puer cookie. All four have exactly the same black flecks in them which is kind of odd looking at the ingredients. Each list is identical except for "oolong tea powder, oolong tea essence" or "green tea powder, green tea essence"

Anyhoo, I love shortbread so these'll go well with my next long puerh session to help ease the stomach.
