Thank you to all who contributed.

Now here is really why I asked because I wanted to gage the idea's that everyone was going on. Now if we've learned one thing over the last few years with 37 states Amending their constitutions to prohibit same sex marriage of any kind it's that this is not really a Republican Democrat issue. My own family serves as a perfect example. As many of you may, or may not know my mothers side of the family is pretty much 100% from south of the border Mexican. Now my friends I must say if there is one stereotype that is true is that most Mexicans are Catholics and my family is no different they are all very religious people. However most of them, in fact if there is a Republican in the family I could not name him/her, are Democrats and vote Democrat. My own mother voted for Walter Mondale in her first Presidential election. However she is very catholic and has commented to me that she feels same sex couples should have something, but don't call it marriage.

Now, the other side. George Gonzales was my cousin, he died a few years ago and yes George was gay. However that is not even the start of the story, George was a former President San Jose Gay Pride Celebration Committee, published point newspaper, and was a original partner in opening Splash Restaurant http://www.splashsj.com/ He was a very involved man in the South Bay community. Now I detail this to dispel one of the points I often see bringing up that being the bigot and hate point. Having belief's, having opinions, and wanting to preserve those belief's don't make people hateful or bigot's it makes them human. My mother is no bigot and I resent any implication that she might be and she has already said she is voting for prop 8.

Religion: As a matter of disclosure I'm not a religious man. I don't practice any sort of faith, and I really do consider myself an atheist. However I find the position that religion can not have a role in government to be very flawed. A persons religion is a part of what makes up their belief's and in a nation were our officals are elected of for and by the people you will see that influence. Our constitution promises us freedom of Religion, not from it and it does not require our government to be atheist itself. Much the opposite actually as Article 6 clause 3 tells us "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States" and no one will ever sell me on the idea that this also protects someone from having to prove the absence of religious belief's to hold office.

Then we have... "Love" it's about "Love." This one has to be the single most annoying and hypocritical argument out there. To put it plainly you can not base your argument that religion needs to be taken out of the decision making process then turn around and use a emotion as part of the reasons why something should be allowed. Secondly, love has no legal definition and can not be legally defined.

To round it out, governments role in this.. well the concept and tradition of marriage as this nation knows it is simply not going anywhere but what exactly is marriage to the state? The state itself is not a person with emotions it's a entity. It does not love, hate, feel, or fear. Now ordinarily I'd agree with most of you on the idea government should be less involved, however in this case I don't see how that is possible, and I feel that The State has the right to grant these contracts as it sees fit. In my opinion there is no compelling legal reason why the state should be made to grant these contracts to any two people.

That being said there is also no compelling reason why it should not grant these to any two people. Simply put, the percentage is so small that it's just not going to make a difference.

Great Italians in American History [13 Oct 2008|11:01pm]

Hello Kiddies,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Columbus Day weekend. I got to watch the parade today, and it is always nice to see. I marched in it once when I was little, which actually makes two major New York parades I have marched in (the other being the Pride march). If I ever decide to do the Village Halloween Parade, that will be a good way to round it out.

Of course Columbus Day is more of a bashing than a bash these days. I remember when I mentioned to 'enjoy the holiday' a few years ago, they were actually offended because it supported a 'rapist and murderer.' I've always found it somewhat disheartening that Italians are the only ethnic group that can be singled out for prejudice with almost no backlash whatsoever. After all, as long as a defendant's last name ends in a vowel, you can prosecute them and put them away without silly things like due process because they are 'mobsters.' I don't know about you, but with the way the government and corporate America are acting lately, I'd take the Mafia in a fucking heartbeat.

Anyway, enough of my personal opinion, let's get on with today's lesson.

In our so-called 'multicultural' society we go to great lengths to showcase the contributions of immigrants and ethnic minorities in American History. Unless those contributions were made by Italians. Like Filippo Mazzei for instance. That name has probably left a great many of you scratching your heads. You probably weren't taught about him in school of course, but he is a very prominent figure in American History.
In addition to bringing Mediterranean fruits and vineyards to the United States, he also was a great philosopher who had an impact on his good friend Thomas Jefferson.

Among his writings was the following quote, printed in The Virginia Gazette in 1774 and translated by Jefferson.

"Tutti gli uomini sono per natura egualmente liberi e indipendenti. Quest' eguaglianza è necessaria per costituire un governo libero. Bisogna che ognuno sia uguale all'altro nel diritto naturale."

All men are by nature equally free and independent. Such equality is necessary in order to create a free government. All men must be equal to each other in natural law.

I'm not sure, but I think Mr. Jefferson might have incorporated that phrase someplace.

So thanks to great men like Cristoforo Colombo and Filippo Mazzei for their important, if unheralded, contributions to this great country.

Happy Columbus Day.

Biden, who is also up for re-election this year along with being the vice presidential nominee, reminded Delaware voters that he’s still running to keep his Senate seat.

“Just remember, folks, I am on the ballot. Don't be carried away with this vice president stuff. I am on the ballot running for my seventh term…so don't forget, don't stop at the top of that ticket, walk your way down. You can vote twice for the first time in your life for the same guy and it’d be legal.”

LJ oddities...

Ican only assume it's something I did, but I'm stilla little puzzled as to why my mood in my last post was listed as 'fdsafasd". Obviously, that's not an English word, nor mood.

Anyway, whilst I'm here, tune into radiolaspositas.com at 10am pacific time tomorrow, for my first radioshow of the semester. I'llhave an interview with KCBS radio's Jeff Bell during the show, talking about OCD. The main part of the show, though, will be oldies and classic rock, anything from the 1960s-70s.

[Edit to add this since I forgot: I think I'll call Dominika tomorrow, just to say hi. I know that doesn't necessarily excite anyone but me,...butI thought I'd post it anyway. On another thought, this keyboardsituation is getting worse.]

I like the one [info]el_jefe59 got better of course.. but here's what kind of pup I am :)

You Are a Bullmastiff

You are confident, reasonable, and very calm. Nothing shakes you up.

It's likely that you were a bit wild when you were younger, but you've gotten that out of your system.

The only time you get aggressive is when someone tries to threaten or harm you in some way.

There's a little bit of wolf underneath all that sheep's clothing!

Im sleepy and semi-grouchy but trying not to be though really, Im home alone so does it matter all that much if I'm feeling pissy? :)

Im supposed to shop with Jenny tomorrow, though my urge to go to MSU's Homecoming wanes with every passing moment and I probably won't even need a new outfit that will make me feel "not-so-hideous-and-different-from-college". I made the comment this evening that "fashion sucks" and after a bit of discussion, realized that fashion doesnt suck, being a fat old woman who only likes thin, young clothes is what sucks :) The really annoying thing is that even if I got all motivated and lost weight and had all my extra flesh cut off and the saggy parts lifted, I'd still be in my 40's and still would be too old to wear the things that I look at and think "oooooooooooh" over. No, really, Wet Seal clothes are not made to be worn in your 40's *G* There's a limit to everything, whether we want to admit it/believe it or not. :) No, I dont want a lecture here on "you're as young as you feel" etc. or the "you can wear whatever you want" stuff, because at some point, you really just shouldnt, even if you can maybe. *shrugs* So it'll be jeans and a shirt and a blazer with a cool scarf for me if I go.. and I'll probably only go if my big sis Kathy really does show up. The whole thing seems like a huge ordeal of driving today, but Im tired, that makes a difference :)

A really cute little walmart checker named Brittney did card me tonight and I teased her becuase she said she was too blind to read the date and I said "Im pretending you were blind enough to think I was under 21" (omg.. I think maybe i said 18...LOL I forgot the legal age at that moment I think) and she said "thats so funny! we really have to card anybody that looks under 40" and I said "thanks, cause Im a few years OVER 40, that makes me feel good" and she said "you're serious??" and seemed genuiinely surprised :) So yeah, I know I dont look my age a lot of the time at least, so thats good. :) I inherited my fat grandma's lack of wrinkles and smooth skin and not my skinny grandma's wrinkliness at least *G* I'll take heavy and smooth over thin and wrinkly (hello Linda Hamilton..eeks) even if my fashion choices are more limited, at least in this area :)

Yes, Im disabling comments, I dont want to be patted on the back and hear "its ok, you're cute" and stuff, I just wanted to rant a bit and I dont need to feel guilty for causing anybody to feel as though they have to try and make me feel better *G*

Fiorcet (with demerol, caffiene, and acetominaphin) has finally knocked down the pounding of my head to bearable levels, but it has left me utterly apathetic.

Well, that's one way to waste a weekend.

Spurred on by [info]teheteha's post here, I've just gotta go off on Palin again. (Note how I've pretty much abandoned the "not discussing politics here" stance I had? lol.)

Today, I read that Palin snarled at some of her supporters at a rally, mistaking them for protesters: read about it here. I found that amusing. I think it's pretty apparent McCain's ship is sinking fast, and he's bailin' himself out with a straw.

Doing fine today. Going to call my advisor at National University tomorrow, and find out how to register for classes. Kind of an important detail, if I'm gonnago there.

Uh... ok... maybe it wasn't Vista that was causing ALL my problems- my keyboard's misbehavinga bit...the space bar is acting uphere.

On that note...Think I'll close for now.

Remember when we used to joke, "Christmas comes earlier every year. Pretty soon they'll have Christmas displays out before Halloween!"?

I've been to three shops this week with their Christmas displays already out. Leo Laporte has even started playing his holiday letters jingle on the Daily Gizwiz podcast!

I can understand it, with the economy being what it is. The stores need to squeeze as much out of the season as they can. On the other hand, are shoppers going to go for it?

Dasien To Appear in Heroes Unite! [13 Oct 2008|04:32pm]

mister_neil
Yep, and here's the official teaser...

It's also featured on my latest Drunk Duck page.

Okay, those of you inventing time in Dasien's convoluted chronology deserve a little explanation. So here it is. The following chronology is how things stand...

Dasien - Chapters 1 thru 10
Crossover Wars (parenthetical)
Energize/Dasien
Heroes Unite - Chapters 1 and 2
Heroes Unite: EGO, featuring Dasien (occurs simultaneously with Energize series)
Dasien Chapters 11 thru 13
The Crossoverlord
Dasien continues...

When I get past Chapter 10 of Dasien, most of this will gel together rather easily.

For now, you should go check out Heroes Unite. The new chapter hasn't started yet, but the last two chapters will give you a decent warm-up!

And our law is, we torture anyone we want [13 Oct 2008|01:34pm]

This is sweet!

China has called on the U.S. to repatriate 17 Chinese Muslim detainees who were to have been released this week, saying they are terrorists and should be brought to justice, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a news conference.

"Some people may worry whether these people could be tortured in China, I believe this is biased. China is a country under the rule of law, and forbids torture by any Chinese authorities, be they judiciary or public security," Qin said.

Right. Because if there's one thing we learned from the 2008 Olympics, it's that the Chinese government can be counted on to keep its promises, especially regarding human rights.

For what it's worth - this is actually what Allison will be studying in her doctoral program. The Fulbright project she's working on is actually different, about the history of the Communist and Nationalist Parties until 1949, and the role that secondary leadership played. But long term, she wants to be a Uyghur specialist.

Nervous about Furfright... [13 Oct 2008|01:36pm]

skyfirefox
It's been almost a whole year since Furfright. And it will be here in four days.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. I spent the time between FF 2007 and 2008 just practicing and honing my skills. I also underwent self-improvement and most of all, I read the book Selling Art 101 by Robert Dvorak. I am feeling optimistic that I will do much better this year. But I cannot help feeling scared of how I may do or how others may judge my work and myself. I am also hosting a panel on painting, but I am nervous about how I may be judged or even if anyone would attend.

Again, I cannot explain it, but I have a gut feeling that something big is going to happen at this convention. What it will be and whether it will be positive or negative I do not know.

But I am going ahead no matter what happens.

Writer's Block: Lenny Bruce [12 Nov 2008|11:40am]

hatter23

Before George Carlin exposed the seven words you can’t say on television, comedian Lenny Bruce was arrested multiple times for saying all seven, and more, on stage. Who is today’s most groundbreaking comedian? Or is there even any ground left to break?

View other answers

While Eddie Izzard has some great takes on sex, history, and Religion, at the moment the mantle is on Bill Maher for getting Religulous into theaters. Really, a motion picture making fun of organized Religion? I think Lenny Bruce would be flabberghasted someone could take on one of the last great taboos.

It's Quiz Time !!! [13 Oct 2008|10:08am]

ericcoleman
Here are the rules.

Answer only one quote.

If you answer more than one I will delete your reply. If there are quotes still not answered the next day I will open it up to any and all guesses.

Most weeks there is a theme. If there is not a theme I will tell you. The theme is open to guess even if you have guessed a quote.

The theme has been guessed by [info]gamerchick, it is SF TV shows

Don't use a search engine (like this can be enforced). If you don't know, you don't know. Maybe next week you will.

You must either be signed into LJ, or say who you are (in case you are a friend of mine who is not on LJ). All anonymous answers will be deleted (hey, I'm obsessive, I want to know who guesses these). Oh, and don't guess as a reply to someone else's guess, on a busy day that makes it hard for me to spot your answer.
