Sun sees things that no one knows she sees. Because she’s small, and she’s quiet, and she fades into the background. People don’t notice she’s there when she’s there. They see her, but they don’t see her.

It had been like this her whole life. She knew people thought she was beautiful. She saw the looks she’d received at parties of friends of her father. But sometimes she wondered if those people ever really saw her, not just any other beautiful girl.

Jin had been the first one to see her that way, to love her from the inside out instead of from the outside in. He had known her, known everything about her, and sacrificed a lot to be the man that he thought she wanted. She was grateful, but she could not let go of the gnawing guilt that he had given up everything that he had been in order to prove to her that he saw her.

For what sometimes felt like a lifetime and what sometimes felt like an instant, she had been happy. They had been happy. Their life had been beautiful, something that others looked up to with awe and with envy. For a moment, she had enjoyed that. But things had changed, they had become different people. From the outside she was sure everything looked perfect, just like it always had. She was sure she looked happy, because she had made sure to.

Her life had taught her that people saw what they wanted to see and believed what they needed to believe in order to go on. Sun needed to believe that things between her and Jin would change. Jin needed to believe that he could keep the woman he loved and stop changing himself to do so. They both needed to believe that their baby was truly a miracle.

But in the end, none of those things could be true. Jin looked into her eyes and saw what he needed to see in order to go on. And she…she looked at him and saw what she wanted to see.
