PS to GIMP brushes

GIMP 2.4 does amazing things!

I just discovered something amazing! I decided to finally convert something again - cropped the individual brushes from the imagepack, which resulted in exactly 100 brushes, so I started batch-converting them. However, the converter gave me an error message. So I tried to find out what had happened. Sadly, it looks as if the brush-batch-converter doesn't work with GIMP 2.4 (apparently, they did something to the way the GIMP handles scripts, and the maker of the script hasn't yet had time to update it).

But: GIMP 2.4 now supports Photoshop brushes (in .abr and .jbr format)! I tried it out, and it definitely works. So if you download a brushset which has an .abr file, you can move this file to your brush folder. On my computer, that would be C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\brushes

Then you restart GIMP/reload your brushes, and the brushes appear with your GIMP brushes.

I encourage you to try this out - if this actually works, it would enable us to use PS brushes without the constant need of converting them.

I'll still look into the tons of requests that are still open - however, for the time being, I'll skip those where the brushmaker has included .abr files, as it appears that you might now be able to use them without converting. Please note that this comes at the price of not being able to use some plugin scripts, or so it seems. I'll probably temporarily change back to 2.3 or 2.2 to get the script working.

Oh yes, I forgot: If we don't need to convert brushes in the future, what should become of this comm? It would of course stay open, due to the fact that there are loads of brushes in here. What else? Should it stay as it is, with closed posting, more like an archive, or should we open members' posting for general discussion and questions? This comm has more members than the gimpbrushes comm, which only allows entries which contains brushes. On the other hand, there are gimp_tutorial (which doesn't allow questions) and gimp_users, which allows all kinds of questions. Thoughts?

During the last few months, this community has been pretty much inactive. I'm sorry for that; sadly, I was busy with many things in RL and somehow the community wasn't really on my mind anymore.

I was however planning to convert and post some more brushsets.

Then tonight I found out something which I think requires a public announcement to the community. For the time being, I have also included this information in the community's profile page.

It appears that ca_pris' LiveJournal and DeviantART accounts were suspended because she did not actually make the brushes she posted; rather, they were taken from the stock site http://www.shutterstock.com/. Ca_pris appears to have removed the watermarks of the original artists and claimed the works as her own. Therefore, I have taken down all the brushes "by ca_pris" that were converted and posted here. Please remove all credit to ca_pris from your resource posts and similar pages. Also, while I am unable to track down the creators of all the brushes "by ca_pris" that were posted to this community, please be aware that the original creators might have published their works under conditions that might not allow you to use them freely for your own artwork. In any case, the original creators most certainly did not give us permission to convert their brushes to GIMP format and post them here.

As you probably know, it is one of the guidelines of this community that we do not convert and post brushes without the permission of the original creator; through ca_pris' deception, we have most likely done exactly that, which could potentially have brought the community into trouble. I have therefore deleted all brushes "by ca_pris" from my own GIMP brush folder; you may wish to consider doing the same.

I am sorry for this annoying situation; sadly, it is practically impossible to verify if someone actually made the brushes which they claim they made. I'm also sorry that the first update after such a long break has do deal with something so thoroughly unpleasant. However, I felt it was necessary to inform all of you about this issue.

Just to keep things in order - a new request post, which I'll link from the site layout.

Comment with links to brush sets you'd like to see converted. You can of course check those brushmakers who are listed in the user info and have already given permission to convert and post their brushes - many of their sets haven't been converted yet. It would be a good idea to check the community tags to see if a particular set has been converted before requesting.

You can also request brushes from new makers. There just needs to be a way to contact the creator - we don't convert brushes of people who haven't given permission. So please, if you link me to a brushset that has been posted somewhere, include a link which helps identify the maker. It also helps if you ask the maker for permission yourself. Please make sure that you link back to this community (for example the userinfo), and tell them that we give full credit for everything we convert. If you absolutely don't want to ask the original brushmaker, I'll of do it for you, but that may take a bit longer. Please note that if the original creator does not want the brushes to be converted or does not reply back, I'll not be able to post them.

To those who convert brushes: Helping out with open requests would of course be most helpful. If you'd like to fill a open request, just comment on it stating you'll do so; this way, there won't be two people converting the same brushset.

So, request away!

I'll delete requests which have been filled, so it's easier to keep track of things.

The voting for the layout contest is over, and we have a new community layout, made by snubbly! Take a look at the community to see it live; and let's have a round of applause for snubbly! \o/\o/\o/\o/\o/\o/

The winning prize has already been delivered, and the two runner-ups (planetgal471, who came in second, and hiswifeylove, who came in third) have also received a little something to thank them for participating.

I guess there will be some brushes posted later today, too. ;-)

And here it is: the poll for the layout contest. Apologies this took so long; one layout maker appeared to have retracted their layout without comment, so I tried to contact them to see if this was done intentionally. But now, the poll is long overdue.

Voting is set to members only; so if you haven't done so already, why don't you join the community now?

Please vote for the layout you'd like to see used for the community; the maker of this layout will also win the contest and receive the prize.

We don't have many submissions, but I'm still sure we'll end up with a nice community layout.

Originally, I had planned to close submissions for the layout contest today. However, there have been very few submissions so far. While this in itself wouldn't require extending the deadline, people pointed out that the time given was quite short to make a layout, and they had a good point there. Therefore I have decided to extend the deadline by a bit more than a week - it probably was not a good idea to exclude a weekend, during which people could have time to work on their layout.

The new and final closing point for the layout contest is Sunday, July 8th, 22:00 UTC. I will update the original contest post, where you can also find more information on the layout contest. I hope some of you will consider taking part!

Hello, dear GIMP users and graphics makers!

Want to make a layout for pstogimpbrushes?

There's something to win, too!

Somehow, I think that a graphics comm could do with a specially-made custom layout beyond what LJ offers as customisation options to Basic accounts. As I have suddenly come into the position to be able to offer a prize to whoever makes a layout, I think it would be fun to have a layout contest.

RULES AND CONDITIONS

You create a layout for pstogimpbrushes and allow us to use it for the comm.

The layout must work with a Basic account, as the comm is one, and it should look good in the commonly used browsers.

Please, make the layout readable - I really have a problem with the current trend of tiny light grey fonts on white background, as I cannot read them well. And as I have to look at the comm quite often, I might just abuse my modly powers and reject layouts that I can't read. ;-) Should I reject a layout for readability reasons, you may edit it or submit another within the deadline.

If you are a GIMP user, it'd be nice if you used the GIMP to create graphics you might use; but other programs are fine, too.

The layout should fit with what the comm is about - for example, no favourite actors/anime characters/etc, please! Images are fine, as long as they are not implying that the comm is about something else. Regarding the design, you are quite free in your creativity - just make it pretty, and keep in mind that there will be many images in entries, so the layout should be able to handle that.

If you use resources created by others, include who they are, so they can be credited somewhere. Don't use resources you don't have permission to use.

Please submit only one layout, so that everyone has the same chance of winning. That means no sockpuppet accounts, too! ;-)

The layout should not have been posted anywhere else before, but should be specifically created for pstogimpbrushes (by you, of course, but that should go without saying).

The layout should offer some way to link to the pages the current one links to (tags, GIMP website etc.), and these links should be adjustable by a maintainer without the need to change large parts of the layout code.

The creator of the winning layout should be willing to work on installing the layout with the maintainers, especially in case there are adjustments to be made before the layout can be installed; you should also be willing to help out if there need to be adjustments made later on that the mods can't handle on their own.

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE YOU CREATE A LAYOUT? (READ: WHAT CAN YOU WIN?)

You link to a test account with the layout installed, so we can see it live, and you provide a preview image - please do this in a comment to this post.

A poll will be made, where community members decide which layout they like best. Please don't get your whole Friendslist to join the comm and vote for you - while this might seem a clever idea, I will be checking.

The winning layout will be installed on the community account.

The winning layout's creator will be credited in pstogimpbrushes' user info.

The winner can choose between either ~280 days of Paid Time or ~600 days of the Extra Userpic add-on. Note that this add-on will only work if you have a Paid Account, and if your Paid Account expires, the add-on will be frozen until you upgrade your account again; this is how LJ works. I can't give you exact numbers for the following reason: I have been gifted a Permanent account, and I can therefore transfer my Paid/Extra Userpic time to another account (this is the prize you are getting); however, the Paid/Extra Userpic time continue to expire while the contest runs. Therefore, you might be getting a few days more or less, depending on how long this whole thing takes.

If you have a Permanent account, the prize will go to another account of your choosing (your second account, your RP account, your comm, your best friend's mother-in-law's second cousin thrice removed's account...)

While the price will be delivered if you abide by the rules above, please don't sue me if you don't win the contest. This is all in good fun.

By submitting a layout, you agree to the rules and conditions above. Please make sure you read them.

Lacouts will be accepted until ~~Friday, 29 June 2007~~ Sunday, July 8, 23:00 UMT (Time zone converter here, reminder posts will be made). Late submissions can't be accepted.
