| King me! -er... Wrong game... |
[Jun. 7th, 2007|10:46 am] |
Fandom Chess is here!!
Ever wanted your name or face all over a HUGE game of chess? Want to promote your website, or give a shout out to your favorite fanfic writer? How about be the selfless human being you're always trying to be and donate to a great charity? Well here is your chance to do just that!
In this life-size game of fandom chess, Prophecy puts a new twist on an old fan favourite. Groups bid to win a place for their logo on our giant chess board, and get the attention of hundreds of people in fandom throughout Prophecy — particularly during the Wizard Chess event, when the life-sized board will be used for game, after game, after game. It's like a star on the Walk of Fame of Prophecy!
One may ask, how in Merlin's name will this work?
The bid competition starts with a call to action from you to your group members. Raise money toward a Fandom Chess bid and submit it as a lump sum to Prophecy, along with the name of the programming session(s) or Prophecy event(s) you’d like to sponsor. Sponsorships will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis; contact the sponsorship team to discuss the wide variety of opportunities available.
Spaces on the chessboard are ranked in order of each piece’s value. There is a reserve of $500 US on the most valuable space (the King) and $50 US on the least valuable (the white spaces). All submissions will earn a place on the Fandom Chess board, if there is room; if not, the highest bids will receive places. The higher your bid, the more you’ll be able to sponsor, and the more valuable chess pieces that will represent your group on the board!
Gather your group members together and work out a bid! Submissions are due by June 10, 2007, but they may be added to and revised at any time up until that deadline. So, send your bid in early and set the stakes in this competition! All bids should be submitted to sponsorship@prophecy2007.org with “Fandom Chess Bid” in the subject line. Once we receive your bid, you’ll get updates on the standings as they change. You can also request to be added to the update list if you haven’t yet sent in your bid, by contacting sponsorship@prophecy2007.org.
Time for submissions is drawing near, so get a move on already, and see you at Prophecy!
If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them in response to this post as well!

| Secret of the Sphinx Challenge - Deadline extended! |
[May. 30th, 2007|02:49 pm] |
The final clue to the Secret of the Sphinx Challenge can be found on our official Prophecy website at:
http://hp2007.org/indexx.html?page=about/orbandowl/2007-05-09&mode=owl
We are pleased to announced that the deadline for the Sphinx challenge has now been extended to noon (Eastern time) on June 5, 2007.
Don't miss your chance to qualify for a drawing for a free stay at the Sheraton during Prophecy! Remember - the winner will be chosen from all qualifying entries sent in by noon (Eastern time) on June 5th!
EDIT -- May 31st: We'd like to thank those of you who have expressed their concern over this matter. We extended the deadline because many contestants were not aware of the final deadline when the May Orb & Owl did NOT reach them.
Given that the answers have been publicly published (which we did not consider, nor were aware of prior to our announcing this deadline extension), we will NOT be accepting any contest entries submitted AFTER the original deadline. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Thank you, The Prophecy Team |

| Special Edition Orb & Owl: IMPORTANT: U.S./Canada Border Crossing Information |
[May. 25th, 2007|07:39 pm] |
Greetings all! Today we bring you a Special May Edition of Prophecy's newsletter, the Orb & Owl: Bringing you tomorrow's news today!
IMPORTANT: U.S./Canada Border Crossing Information
We want to share critically important information with Prophecy guests who are traveling between the U.S. and Canada. We urge all Prophecy guests who live in the U.S. to carefully read the following travel requirements in full. Especially if you are under the age of 18 and will be traveling between the U.S. and Canada without your parents, note that there is special additional documentation described below that you must provide when crossing the U.S.- Canadian border.
The following identification requirements apply to all Prophecy guests traveling between the U.S. and Canada:
Requirements for travel by air: A valid, current U.S. passport. As of January 23, 2007, no other proof of citizenship is acceptable when traveling by air between the U.S. and Canada.
Requirements for travel by land (i.e., by car, train, bus, and so forth): Photo identification, such as a current, valid driver's license AND proof of U.S. citizenship, such as your U.S. passport or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. A driver's license, voter's registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship. If used, a birth certificate must be certified and not a photocopy. For further help on obtaining a certified birth certificate, please visit here.
IMPORTANT: The following additional requirements apply to all Prophecy guests under the age of 18 traveling between the U.S. and Canada without a parent:
According to the U.S. State Department: "Due to international concern over child abduction, single parents, grandparents, or guardians traveling with children often need proof of custody or notarized letters from the other parent authorizing travel. (This is in addition to proof of citizenship as explained above.) Any person under the age of 18 and traveling alone should carry a letter from his/her parent or guardian authorizing the trip. Travelers without such documentation may experience delays at the port of entry."
A form letter to help provide the needed authorization mentioned above can be found here. This form letter will only be acceptable if it is completed in full and notarized. Note that this border crossing letter for minors is not the same as the parental permission form needed to gain entry to Prophecy. The permission form for attending Prophecy will not satisfy the government requirements for crossing the U.S.-Canadian border.
For complete information, please refer to the U.S. State Department's Tips for Travelers to Canada, which can be read in full at the official State Department website.
For any additional questions, please contact Prophecy Registration so that we can help direct you to the correct government information and requirements. |

Our guests on this panel span the range of fan activities, and their combined love of Potter will certainly make for an unforgettable discussion.
Some guests include: author and teacher John Granger; authors Connie Neal and Philip Nel; HP-Lexicon creator Steve Vander Ark; TLC Editor and Official Podcast member Sue Upton; Adviser for FictionAlley.org Heidi Tandy; fan fiction writer Emma Grant, and many more, click HERE for more about all the speakers and special guests, and how to get tickets! [Feb. 15th, 2007|01:22 am] |

You have until 11:59 PM EST on Thursday February 15th to submit your programming proposals to Prophecy's Call for Proposals.
We are seeking proposals for a variety of educational programming, including presentations, discussion panels, round tables, workshops and poster sessions addressing topics relevant to the books and/or the fan community. Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* LITERATURE & MEDIA STUDIES Character analyses, symbolism, and literary criticism; comparisons between the Harry Potter books, their contemporaries and classic children’s literature. Critical responses to the Harry Potter franchise (books, movies, music and merchandise) as a media and cultural phenomenon.
* SCIENCE Looking at the ways science manifests itself in the Harry Potter series: the genetics of magic, the wizarding community’s relation to ecology, the physics of flying and Apparating, and the chemistry of potions and alchemy.
* EDUCATION & CREATIVITY Exploring education within the books, and teaching Harry Potter in the classroom. Learning about and experimenting with creative writing and art.
* ARTS, HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES Examining philosophical and religious themes, parallels and elements within the books. Examining the Wizarding world and its culture, policies, worldview and behaviour through the disciplines of psychology, political science and anthropology.
* FANDOM CULTURE & EXPERIENCE Looking at the fandom as a community with its own jargon, jokes, news, activities and events; the past and future of the Harry Potter fandom: how it has evolved and its future. Analyses of the fanfiction and fanart phenomena: their value as creative fiction/art; sexuality, romance and feminism within fanworks; intellectual property/copyright issues.
If you've got the beginnings of a brilliant topic that you'd like to expand upon, our Programming Prompts might help you to develop your idea, and it's not too late to find fellow presenters in the Programming Collaboration thread on the Prophecy forum. Proposals can be submitted by using the Submissions page.
If you have any questions, contact us at formalprogramming@prophecy2007.org. |
