[dunkelbunt]'s music is like an imaginary river. If looked for on a map, it would start somewhere in India. It would head out west and follow a fairly certain path while constantly changing in size and intensity, through the Orient and into the Balkans. From there, things get a little more confusing. Like a delta it spreads, and none of its offshoots take precedence over the others. It keeps moving - west, north, south, looping around itself, on the way adding dancehall and electro, reggae and house, bossa and breakbeats, jazz and ragga to the mix. With his ever-growing list of featured vocal collaborators like Cloud Tissa, Jimi D, Selecta Bence et.al., [dunkelbunt] continues to expand and recreate his unique musical universe, beyond any borders set between the cultures by the prejudices of the fundamentalists on all sides.

Breakin Bread continue their series of underground mix CDs with a mix CD made for the summer from one of Cali's top beatsmiths DJ Zeph. Following Breakin Bread mix CDs from Rob Life, Florian Keller, DJ Timber and Para, Zeph brings a whole new vibe to the series. Previous releases touched on deep funk, boogie soul , disco rap, golden age hip hop and b-boy breaks and now Zeph takes us down the latin path. There's been a latin revival in the UK in the past 5 years with labels like Jazzman and Soundway re-issuing classic and obscure latin tracks from yesteryear and DJ crews like Sofrito hosting illegal latin warehouse parties in London. Quantic and a crew of similar thinking Brighton based heads also stared producing some new latin based tracks before Quantic took it to a whole nother level by moving to Colombia and starting a latin version of the Quantic Soul Orchestra.

A continuation of the jazzy instrumental groove DJ Cam laid out on the Rebirth Of Cool set -- a blend of blissful beats and strings from Cam fleshed out live with a sweet sound and funkier movements with piano & keys, bass, live drums and guitar! Cam works with familiar tunes here, balancing the easygoing, breezy jazzy vibe with a tight bottom end to the sound, no doubt owing to Cam's years as a deft, funky beat maker. Very nice stuff.

Techno swots will know 'general MIDI' as a technical specification that allows synthesizers to receive messages from other digital equipment. In other words, it's something that helps make the creation of dance music possible. General Midi, on the other hand, is Bristolian Paul Crossman, who has been active on the breakbeat scene since the late 90s. Operation Overdrive, his second album, is a mixture of underground and commercial elements that veers uneasily between the tough and the sugary.
