Autumn/Winter '07.

Turning over the pages of Vogue words like, ‘carpet, teddy bear, treated wool, toxic-coloured’ all pop out at me. And, well - well, I say ‘no’. After I’ve stocked up (and fallen in love with) ballet pumps and leggings I am informed that they are items to delete. Other things to make the cut list: fringe decorations, skinny jeans, neon colours, turban hats (as seen in Dolce & Gabbana), the bubble shape, and princess coats. Instead, we should welcome: oversized berets, wide-legged jeans, ankle boots, off-colours, ribbed tights, the parka, feather decorations, and the trapeze shape. Other items that will be taking a well deserved rest include smock dresses, skull motifs, platform heels, cobalt blue and dungarees.

Here’s what I love about winter: the chic grey makes a comeback. Only to you and I it may be known as grey but to Vogue it is, “lustrous anthracite” (whatever that means). Layers: dove, silvery hues, patent, or sequins (yes, I always though they belonged to fairy outfits too but apparently they can look good).

‘Cool nerds!’ say Vogue, and I feel my blood pressure waver slightly. I’ve showed this page to my dad after he finally declared his love for my glasses due to the fact, ‘guys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses’. So with a smile I welcome these into my wardrobe: boyish blazers, low-slung jodhpurs, crisp white shirts, a sweater dress with d-ring belt, varsity scarves, ribbed socks, and satchels. God, I love fashion.

What coats should you look for? ‘Urban’ - basically, in no nonsense terms, the parka; padded is an avoidable trend while the ‘deflated’ look will be more flattering, with a cinched waist. ‘Fit and flare’; a lovely girly coat as seen in the Bottega Veneta collection; wear a full skirt and fitted top for optimum effect. ‘Mannish,’ says Vogue UK, ‘oversized and straight-cut, this needs to look as if its been borrowed from the boyfriend.’ (See Paul Smith, Nicole Farhi and John Rocha collections.) Definitely not a personal favourite.

And, lastly, lets address hair (which, due to my recent haircut, I don’t have that much of): relaxed buns and quiffs, low-slung ponytails and sweeping fringes; pretty, feminine and chic.

NOT the Quote of the Week: “I’m sure if I had to live in the fashion world full time it would drive me demented, but as an occasional escape, it’s a sight more glamorous than Gordon Brown’s leadership launch. And yes, I really do care what happens to hemlines next year.” - Edward Heathcoat Amory, political commentator for the Daily Mail.

PS. Check out Doutzen Kroes in the l’oreal adverts. I would’ve preferred my dear Gemma Ward, but Doutzen is lovely. Does this mean she might, in the near future, bag herself ’supermodel’ status?

Okay, I'm having a bit of a disaster recently. I've finally found the plain black cardigan I've been looking for (buttons on the lower part, detailing around the shoulders and neckline) but I still have two very important needs.

ONE: The two banded headband. I really do not know the word for it, but something like the ones featured in Valentino Spring/Summer '07 collection:

TWO: A black skirt. Maybe A-line, slightly floaty as it's for summer, nice and practical. Preferably just below the knee. It's going to be for school so it has to be relatively cheap.

For this I don't actually have any examples as I cannot see it anywhere.

Dressing For Your Body Shape

Sometimes it's not all about what's in fashion. For example - I love dresses (like the one in my previous posts) that are light, are very overly patterned, and slightly shapeless. However for some people that can create the illusion of being pregnant. It's all about your shape. Some trends people can go with, others you should just say away from.

Turtle necked jumpers can be a huge no-no if you have a larger bust. It's completely unflattering. Instead a layered v-neck can look really nice and having neck area showing can elongate your body.

Tailoring is great. It emphasises your waist and can cover up other areas that you aren't quite as comfortable with. Boxy suits are not a good look on anybody. I personally prefer (and unfortunately I know this after all the business studies lessons I've done) a flat-fronted trousers and wider, longer, lengths.

If you're looking for something more casual then there is nothing wrong with a good pair of jeans. High-waisted are fashionable at the moment but I personally think that they're horrible. While they hold the stomach in, you can normally see the lines underneath a t-shirt. Faded jeans or light blue, are quite unflattering. I normally opt for a darker colour with shading (darker on the outside, lighter in the middle). Skinny jeans can look great on people who have slim calves - I tend to wear them with a slightly longer top to cover my thighs though. Wide leg jeans are possibly a love of my life - but I like to have them fitted around the waist and the butt area before falling to the ground. There's a difference between wide leg and shapeless.

If your arms aren't your best asset then there's nothing wrong with covering them up. Select a three quarter length sleeve instead, or wear a wrap or shawl (nice only, not Grandma style) to cover them up.

And finally, my favourite thing of all: the wrap dress. It gives even the most flat chested of people (i.e. me) the illusion of having something there, it nips in around the waist, and then casually falls over the stomach. I tend to wear one of these with a pretty scarf so it makes me look a little taller than I really am.

A few last notes:

+ Pear shaped - light on top, dark on bottom.
+ If you're heavier on top - light on bottom, dark on top.

Of course there aren't really any rules as such to clothing. Some things just work, other's don't. You only know when you try things on.

You can't really see from these pictures (I did a zoomed in one, but it was too blurry) but I've had my nails French manicured. They're gorgeous! My auntie is on a college course to become a beautician so she's trying out different things on me. Apparently my hands are nice for her to work on (she was going to use my mums but her nails are a bit... deformed) so I get to be her hand model for when she goes to college.

Anyway! Check 'em out.

Ugly Betty Dresses!

I've developed a love wacky patterns. I have no idea why as these style dresses make me look like a 60s/80s throwback but I wear them regardless. They also make me look around 10 years old and a brunette Twiggy (but we'll forget about that, m'kay?). Everybody hates them until I try them on (wherein they say I look cute, which is slightly offensive) so... be prepared.

And... (It's hard to appreciate how gorgeous this is, from the camera angles and lighting. Oh well.)

The thing that makes it even more drool-worthy is that the first dress is only £7 from MK One and the second was £8 from Primark.
