SPELL IT OUT: IMPEACH! RALLY THIS SATURDAY-SPREAD THE WORD!

Some are bringing street signs, some are bringing freeway signs. Some groups have had t-shirts made. Some will come with art on their bodies.  Some folks will bring giant letters.  Any way your creativity inspires you, SPELL IT OUT:

Listen to the IMPEACH psa now playing on KRCL.

George Bush and Dick Cheney have lied the nation into a disastrous war of aggression, are spying in open violation of the law, and have authorized the use of torture. These high crimes and misdemeanors demand accountability. Since Congress doesn't seem to get it, on April 28 tens of thousands of Americans - from Miami to North Pole, Alaska - are going to spell it out for them: IMPEACH!

Gather at noon on the sidewalk in front of the Federal Building , 100 South State Street

in downtown Salt Lake City.

Bring signs and your favorite way to spell out IMPEACH!

Speakers, music, soapbox, walk around downtown

Speakers will include:

  • Constitutional Law Scholar  Ed Firmage
  • Bush War Crimes Expert Chuck Tripp
  • Anti-Nuclear and Peace Activist Eileen McCabe

Rocky Anderson to Appear on NPR Monday, March 26

There is lots of news nationally about Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson's outspoken stance on the U.S. Administraton and the Iraq War.  One Utah has  post on Rocky and Bill O'Reilly.

I received word this morning that  Rocky Anderson will be the guest of a nationally syndicated NPR program on Monday.  Anderson will be the featured guest of “On Point,” which airs at 11 am exclusively on KCPW.

Anderson will tape the program from the KCPW studios on Monday morning, March 26th.

Rocky will likely be addressing impeachment on this show.

Here is a piece that appeared on Common Dreams yesterday.

Published on Thursday, March 22, 2007 by the New York Times
by Kirk Johnson

SALT LAKE CITY — Rocky Anderson may not be the most liberal mayor in America. But here in the most conservative state, he might as well be.

Mayor Rocky Anderson has become a national anti-Bush spokesman. (AP Photo/Ted S. Warren)
Just being himself is enough to galvanize, divide or enrage people who have followed his career as Salt Lake City’s mayor, and who are now watching him become, in the twilight of his final term, a national spokesman for the excoriation and impeachment of President Bush.

[“President Bush is a war criminal,” Mr. Anderson, a Democrat, said at a rally here on Monday marking the fourth anniversary of the war in Iraq. “Let impeachment be the first step toward national reconciliation — and toward penance for the outrages committed in our nation’s name.”]

Mr. Anderson, a 55-year-old lapsed Mormon and former civil litigator with a rich baritone and a mane of patrician-silver hair, is no stranger to strong talk and political stances that leave his audiences breathless with exasperation, admiration or sometimes a mixture of both.

Public hearing on Envirocare's proposed expansion

    From HEAL Utah:

We need your help to stop the expansion of nuclear waste disposal in Utah. Utah has been taking the lion’s share of radioactive waste from around the country for nearly two decades, and now the new owners of Envirocare want to add another half-century of disposal capacity to that by doubling the size of their landfill. This would entrench Utah as a dumping ground for the nation's nuclear waste for decades to come.

Please take a minute to tell the Department of Environmental Quality to reject Envirocare's proposed expansion. The best way to submit your comments is in person at the public hearing next Tuesday, August 9th, at 7:00pm at the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, 168 N. 1950 West (Just off North Temple) in room 101. If you can't make it in person, click here to send your comments now: http://www.healutah.org/volunteer/envirocarealert.htm.

Envirocare's proposal calls for adding 536 acres of land to their existing facility--543 acres acquired in 1987. This despite the fact that by their own admission, Envirocare still has up to 20 years of disposal capacity at their existing site. Although once commenting that, "there would be no other shoe to drop,” after their decision to stop pursuing hotter Class B&C radioactive waste, the new owners seem poised to lock future generations of Utahns into taking the nation's radioactive waste.

It is important that the DEQ hear from concerned citizens now on this matter. For more information and to send your comments now, click here: http://www.healutah.org/volunteer/envirocarealert.htm.

As Murphy’s Law would have it, the hearing on Envirocare’s proposed expansion is the same evening as the Hiroshima/Nagasaki commemoration event we have been planning (Film event and candlelight vigil ceremony at the Salt Lake City Main Library starting at 7:00 on Aug 9th). We encourage you to attend one of the two events and show your support for protecting public health from nuclear and toxic wastes. For more information on the two events, please visit our website at www.healutah.org or call us at 801-355-5055.

Thanks for all your help and support!

    Jason Groenewold
    Director, HEAL Utah

WHAT: Public hearing on Envirocare's proposed expansion to double in size.

    WHEN: Tuesday August 9th at 7:00 p.m.

WHERE: Utah Department of Environmental Quality, 168 N. 1950 West (Just off North Temple) in room 101. Entrance is on the east side of the building.

Comment can be given in person on the 9th, by e-mail: dfinerfrock@utah.gov, http://www.healutah.org/volunteer/envirocarealert.htm or by mail: Dane Finerfrock, Utah Division of Radiation Control, 168 N. 1950 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84116

    I may be paranoid...

So, despite my concerns that making such a post could make me a target of the FBI and other law enforcement (due to the fact that the Patriot Act gives them the power to investigate me just for having a dissenting voice, without my ever having knowledge of it)...

First, here is the link with the most information:

    http://www.sltrib.com/search/ci_2861968

Those in the VFW have invited Bush to their annual national convention, which is in SLC this year. He has been to the last three. This one is being held in the state of his greatest support. He hasn't been here in years. Despite the fact that, due to security reasons, his schedule is not known, those at the VFW have invited and are expecting him.

I feel very strongly about this. This isn't any normal opportunity to demostrate or air your voice to approve or disapprove of our government's policies. Now is the time.

I'm trying to get the word out so that this will snowball into something that cannot be ignored easily. Please, everyone, pass the word on. We need to show that, even in a society where we are forever being stereotyped by the world as being homogenous, white-washed, and conservative, that there is a true diversity of voice and opinion that the president cannot ignore. That even in the most homogenous society where our voices don't often hold sway over the powerful, we are still here, we still passionately believe in the concept of democracy, and that we will not be silenced.

Please, pass the word along. When the time comes, take the day off of work if necessary, and add your voice to a number of people that will hopefully be larger than anything Utah has seen.
