He's of Spanish descent, I presume.

I second "Romanian." Not because I still like the vampire theory or anything...

I'm going with 'typical black-haired villian' b/c right up till the end he was meant to appear evil, so to aid that illusion he was given every stereotypical manifestation possible; ugly, mean, and black on every possible surface.

But of course, that's not necessarily an exclusive answer, e.g he could be Romanian as well, at least I like to think so ;]

I'm going with 'because it's cool'. Seriously, I don't think there's anything particularly meaningful or significant about Snape's hair and eye colour.

I think JK Rowling designed him to look as mysterious as possible. He's also supposed to appear imposing, threatening, and if you consider all his various physical attributes: sallow skin, hooked nose, fathomless black eyes, thin frame, black, greasy, shoulder-length hair... he sounds like a pretty imposing figure to me!

So I agree with [info]phairest: he was meant to appear 'evil'. As for his nationality: who knows? JK Rowling never went into detail about it, so that leaves it down to the reader to decide what they want to think. Thus, nothing regarding that is really a wrong theory. I'm not sure where the surnames 'Prince' and 'Snape' originate, either.

Ok, did a bit of searching (just for fun), and here's what I found, courtesy of ancestry.com:

Snape
English and Scottish: habitational name from any of various places in England and southern Scotland, for example in North Yorkshire near Bedale, in the Lowlands near Biggar, and in Suffolk, so named with Old English snæp ‘area of boggy land’. In Sussex the dialect term snape is still used of boggy, uncultivable land.

Prince
1. English and French: nickname from Middle English, Old French prince (Latin princeps), presumably denoting someone who behaved in a regal manner or who had won the title in some contest of skill.
2. Translation of German and Ashkenazic Jewish Prinz or of a word meaning ‘prince’ in some other language.

Hooked nose can go beautifully with blue eyes... *signs*

"Because he's Italian/Spanish/Transylvanian/Other (Specify)"

- because he's a Jew. (And metaphorically too.))

His hair and eyes are black because A) it looks sexy and b) he looks a lot like his mother, who was also pale, dark haired and dark eyed. Enough with the Spanish/italian theories!! He's white white!!

sure! Enough with Spain and Italy! Jewish theoty!!! Jewish roots as they are!!! Yes, he looks much like hgis mother and this very mother looks much like Rebekka from Ivanhoe! So we see quite jewish phenotype at the outcome: dark eyes and hair, hooked nose, bad temper and malicious sence of humour. Yeah, I forgot the talant at quite specific branch of science. Verdict: a Jew!

You know I'm not entirely convinced his eyes are black. Some people think my eyes are black, but in fact they're just a very, very dark blue. Perhaps upon first glance they appear black, but aren't us Snape fans supposed to look deeper than that?
