I thought that I would try something different today, so I bought a pack of these:

They're DJ Mix apple flavoured menthols. I've never had menthols before, so this was all very new and exciting to me :P I have to say, I did enjoy these. You can definitely taste the apple, but it's not overpowering, it's almost like an after taste.

My assistant has been, except for a relatively brief period when she quit, a dedicated Marlboro Reds and Camel Filters smoker for at least fifteen years. Three or four weeks ago, she finally gave in to her boyfriend's encouragement and switched to American Spirits. He doesn't smoke, and said he wanted her to switch because he was concerned about the assorted additives in her cigarettes. He also said that he had read that people who smoke additive free cigarettes tend to smoke less and have an easier time quitting if they decide to do so. The additive he kept harping about was ammonia, which is added to make nicotine more easily absorbed. After switching, she found her daily consumption gradually creeping upward, and over a period of three weeks she went from roughly a pack a day to close to two packs. She didn't like American Spirits and has since returned to Reds, but has found it a little difficult to curb her consumption to a pack a day. I hope her boyfriend is happy.

So I thought I would share what happened to me today.

I was on the street, I sat down on a park bench and lit up a smoke. I'm about halfway through it when a woman and her baby come and sit next to me. She starts shaking her head, and she says to me, "Can you not smoke near my baby?". Wait. Let's rewind. She sat next to me, while I was already smoking. I was there first! I said this to her, and she just said, "I think it's disgusting that you would smoke near children."
Ugh. I wasn't in the mood for an argument, so I just got up and walked away, but honestly, what kind of nutjob would sit next to somebody smoking and then complain about it?

I smoked Camel Turkish Jade light 100's or just TJ lights if I couldn't get 100's. TJ was hard to find around my area, but it was worth driving to the nearest Sheetz to get them for me!
So, now that Camel has discontinued them- I am sad, I've tried Marlboro menthol, milds, smooth, etc- HATE. Tried the suggested #9's, again - hate. So, I fiddled around with a few other kinds and have settled for Camel Menthol Light- not great, and I miss my Jades terribly. As does my hubby, he's not a smoker, but he stopped complaining - even while sitting right next to me in bed while I was smoking- when I smoked the Jades. He liked the smell, even tried one and liked it! lol. But he hates the menthol lights, I'm not real fond of them either, but they're the only ones that haven't completely sucked.
Anyone have a suggestion?
Rare/exotic brands welcome, as long as I can buy them somewhere- even online will work.

Well I mentioned smoking to my mom and she assumed that even though I have smoked I didn't like it so that was the end of that. So now I have to wake up in the middle of the night hop my patio and smoke on the side of my apartment which is why I'm up right now. My friends were more responsive to me smoking except my bossy best friend. She smokes herself so I have no idea why she is on my ass about it.

To be honest there has never been something so stress relieving as smoking. Someone suggested popping bubble wrap. Nope didnt work. Have been biting my nails since I was about seven. Barely works. Maybe it's the oral fixation that I have that make it appeal to me. No matter what kind of mood I'm in though smoking makes me happy. I love the smell and especially the taste. Okay I'm done rambling I should go back to sleep. G'night

Memories of the UCONN Library Smoking Lounge

Overhearing a couple of students lamenting that the library doesn't have a smoking lounge the other day brought back some memories from when I was a grad student at the University of Connecticut and practically lived in the library's smoking lounge from 1995 - 1997. So, for what they're worth, here they are.

Memory One:
The room always had its regulars, but around midterm and final exam time, it would fill to capacity with stressed out students, many of whom were usually non-smokers or only social smokers. One night during finals week, I had left the room briefly to go to the periodicals section in the library basement. As I was returning, the elevator stopped on the second floor and a young woman I'd gauge to be in her mid twenties got on. She was wearing tight jeans and a delightfully snug black sweater that contrasted nicely with her long blond hair. She was also holding a pack of Marlboro Lights and a lighter. She asked me if there was a smoking lounge on the fourth floor and I replied in the affirmative, saying that it was where I was headed. She looked up at the floor indicator and said "Good!" In a relieved voice. When we got to the lounge, I invited her to sit with me and she did so, immediately lighting a cigarette before I had a chance to offer to do it for her. She smoked deeply, with long drags and deep inhales. The relief she was feeling was visible with every lungful of smoke she exhaled. "Feel better?" I asked after she had taken several drags and was reaching for the ashtray. She nodded her head a couple of times and said "Yes" before taking another drag. She went on to say that she had been a student at UCONN for three years and hadn't known about the room until that day. "I could have been coming up here to smoke instead of freezing my ass off outside every twenty minutes." I observed that she could just bring her books with her and study in the room, and she explained that her study partner didn't smoke. She lit a second cigarette as soon as she was finished with the first. She smoked the second cigarette more leisurely, but still with long drags and deep inhales. We chatted a little and as she finished her second cigarette she told me that she had quit smoking two years earlier, but had bought a pack that morning. "I finished it this afternoon and gave up and just bought a carton. I seriously doubt that I'm going to quit again." She lit a third cigarette, and I made some comment like "Not at the rate you're going." When she finished her third cigarette, she checked her watch and said she'd better be going. I never saw her again.

Memory Two:
The regular visitors to the room got to know each other to varying degrees, and when someone didn't show up for a couple of days we would wonder if they were okay and would ask after them. One young woman was an adjunct faculty member. She had a nice figure, olive complexion, and curly black hair. She was always in the room from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. working on her laptop every day and smoked somewhat heavily. Then she disappeared. After a couple of days, I asked a young woman with whom i had seen her talking on occasion if she knew where she was, if she was okay. Turns out she had decided to quit smoking cold turkey. "I'm not sure how she's doing, she's sort of been keeping to herself except to teach. I don't think I'd like to be her students right now." A couple days later, in the evening, the room was about half full and the air was thick with smoke. I heard the door open and since I was waiting for my girlfriend, I looked up. The missing girl walked in and was greeted with smiles and waves from several of us. She didn't say a word. She just stood in the middle of the room, took several deep breaths, turned around and left. The weekend passed and I was in the room on Monday morning before class when she came in again. This time, though, she took a seat across from me and pulled a pack of Kamel Reds from her purse and allowed me to light it for her. I asked if she had given up on her attempt to quit and she nodded as she drew on her cigarette. She inhaled and spoke with a strained voice as she held the smoke in her lungs. "Oh hell yeah!" (Exhale) "No fucking way I'm doing that again!"

Memory Three:
It was fairly early in my relationship with my girlfriend and we were still getting to know each other. Her nursing class schedule was quite a bit different from mine that first semester of our relationship, and she would often be waiting for me in the smoking lounge when I finished with classes in the late afternoon. I'll never for get the sight that greeted me when I walked in one day. She was sitting in one of the lounge chairs, her long legs crossed beneath her short skirt, brown hair tumbling over her shoulders, and a cigarette gracefully held between the long fingers of her right hand. I watched as she brought it to her lips and took a long gentle drag, which she inhaled with a snap. Her chest rose as she filled her lungs before slowly falling as she slowly exhaled a beautiful cone of smoke to the side. Then I noticed the title of the textbook she was reading: "Respiratory Therapy: Theory and Practice." Somehow, I knew the relationship was going to work.

Hello all... I just discovered this community and I love it! Whoever came up with this is a genius.

I'll start with the basics. I tried smoking a few months before I turned 18, smoked on and off for about 6 months, and then my boyfriend made me quit. :( About a year later I started up again, only occasionally though, like when I was high or drunk. I've been smoking regularly for about a year now.

All my friends know and accept it, my sister knows and is fine with it (she smokes sometimes too) but my parents have no idea. My dad is an ex-cigarette smoker but a frequent pipe smoker. My mom took two drags when she was in her 20s and never did it again. They're both in the medical field so they know EXACTLY all the health risks and what not.

I was considering letting them find out because I hate hiding stuff from them, but then a couple of things happened that changed my mind:
1. My dad found a pack of cigs in my old apartment and asked if I smoked. I was going to tell the truth, but then I saw how, like, intense he got so I lied. They were still in the plastic and fallen behind some books on the shelf so I got away with saying "oh I just bought them when I turned 18 because I could." yeah I wasn't expecting him to freak out considering he still smokes a pipe and cigars regularly.
2. My parents visited me about a week ago, my dad forgot his pipe, and my boyfriend said "there are cigarettes here if you want one, they belong to our other roommate" and before my dad answered, my mom went off on this ultra dramatic diatribe about "I don't want to see you smoke I HATE IT every time I see someone smoking I picture slimy people in a dingy bar and I don't want to see you lower yourself to that!! I can't understand what the draw is, I tried it in college and it was pretty boring! blah blah blah"
:( so if that's how she reacts when my dad, who she knows smokes tobacco all the time, wants one cigarette, imagine how she'd flip the bitch if she found out her youngest daughter smoked!

Anyway, I like smoking. I have severe clinical depression, and I just can't keep up with doctor visits and trips to the pharmacy every 3 weeks to get new meds, not to mention the daily side effects. However, when I have a huge mood swing or get overwhelmed, sometimes it really helps to go outside and have a cigarette, relax for a few minutes. Also, I have some really great moments with my boyfriend and my best friend when we just go outside at night and smoke under the stars. Maybe all this sounds silly, but it's the way I feel. So I'm not planning on quitting anytime soon!

BTW, I'm loyal to Marlboro Reds and my boyfriend/roommate both like Parliament Lights. :)

The Perfect/BestTime Argument

I have always been intrigued and a little irritated by anti smokers using different times in a smoker's life as reasons they should stop smoking. I understand the whole New Year's resolution bit, what I'm talking about are when I'm asked if I'm going to quit smoking on my birthday, or when a particularly stressful project is finished. Two incedents have brought this issue to mind recently.

The first was a couple of days ago when I mentioned to a mildly anti smoking colleague that I'll be 40 years old in a couple of years. She asked if I plan to quit smoking when I turn 40 and seemed surprised when I said "No, why should I?" She tried to explain that if I'm not going to quit smoking before then, I should quit when I turn 40 because it would be "The best time, before your body really starts to age and your lungs are still able to recover." I understand the reasoning, but it drives me up the wall. If I didn't accept the fact that I'm taking a risk by smoking, I wouldn't smoke. Why should that be any different when I'm 40, or any other age?

The second was yesterday afternoon. The students have begun to slowly come back to town and a few incoming freshman can be sighted around town desperately hoping that their parents will leave soon so they can get on with being on their own. A coworker and I had gone for a late lunch and were sitting on the outside patio. At a table nearby were seated a young woman I would guess to be no more than 19 years old and her mother. I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but the bits of their conversation that reached my ears told me that the young woman had just moved to town and would be starting classes at the university in a couple of weeks. Her mother would be leaving in the morning. After they finished eating, the young woman lit a cigarette and a bit of smoke drifted toward her mother. She fanned it away and said "Sorry" while moving her cigarette away. Her mother replied with "You know, sweety, this would be the perfect time for you to quit."To her credit, the young woman kept her cool and just said, "I know. I'll think about it." Again, why is starting college "The perfect time" for her to quit smoking? She's obviously been smoking long enough to be doing so openly in front of her mother, so it's not like she'd be giving up some pastime she'd been playing with. If anything, it seems to me like this would be the worst time for her to quit smoking.

I'm so proud of one of my interns I can't stop smiling.

About a year ago, my office hired an intern I'll call Clair. She wasn't assigned to any particular program or person, but was to assist all of us as necessary. Clair's internship was a little different than usual because it didn't have a specific end date. It was, essentially, a part time job while she decided whether or not to continue with grad school. By calling it an internship and registering for three hours, however, she could keep her student loans deferred. I digress. Sorry.

Clair was 27 years old when she arrived. She was also a closet smoker. She came out to me after a couple of months because she tended to work with me more than other supervisory people and we frequently found ourselves in the office on weekends and evenings. She never asked me to not say anything, but I had noticed that she didn't smoke around others so I didn't say anything. When I asked her about it, I learned that she had started smoking when she was 13 or 14, and while some of her friends knew her as a social smoker, she had never been comfortable revealing that she is a dedicated pack a day smoker. when she moved here and started grad school, she concealed her smoking completely and while some people suspected that she was a smoker, Clair never smoked publicly, even in social settings. It didn't make sense to me, but whatever. I chided her about it from time to time, but never seriously.

Well, yesterday was the end of her internship because she resumes classes in a couple of weeks and I decided to take her and the other summer interns who are leaving out for a drink after work. Both of my assistants came along and the whole gaggle of us descended on my favorite dive bar taking over the ally that was converted to a patio when the indoor smoking ban was passed. Beers and other adult beverages in front of us, most of us proceeded to light up as soon as we had toasted the end of their servitude. I was surprised, but happy and proud when Clair opened her purse, removed her cigarettes and lighter and lit up as if she had been doing so in front of her co-workers all along. To the expressions of surprise she shrugged her shoulders and replied, "Yeah, I smoke. Since I've figured out I'm not quitting any time soon, I might as well stop hiding it."

Sniff, sniff, I'm so proud.

Well yay. Hi guys, I'm new.. so here is my introduction post.

I started smoking relatively young.. 11 or 12 I think. Neither of my parents ( or older sister ) smoked, so it was always kind of hard to get cigarettes. Like any young kid, I think I did it to rebel in a round about way. But I liked it too much. I smoked Marlboro reds until I was about 15, and I had a steady way to get them. Then I switched to Camels. I went on and off from Turkish Golds, to Filters, to Turkish Royals. I am a firm 100s smoker, too. Growing up poor made me very frugal, and I thought: hey, same price, more tobacco. Eventually I just started liking the way they tasted more than shorts. So after that, I turned 18 ( yay ) got my own place, and could barely afford roll your owns. I had a friend who would give me packs from her carton all the time.. but they were Newport 100s. I instantly hopped on the menthol train. I used to smoke 2 packs a day, but I've cut back to 1 a day. But to me: there is nothing better than talking a stroll down the street, and smoking a cigarette. Even better if it's raining.

I actually just bought some European cigarettes online.. they're called Sobranies. I've never heard of them, but a friend assured me they were like Dunhill's, so why not. I bought a carton of the Cocktail 100s ( which are colored like Nat Sherman's Fantasia cigarettes, but have the regular cigarette gauge ), and two cartons of the Menthol 100s. Has anyone had any luck with these? Should I be excited? They were relatively cheap ( $30 a carton ) and in the long run will save me money from having to buy $40 cartons of Newports. So did I do good with buying these babies? Yay/Nay?

Oh.. and does anyone know how to pronounce "Sobranie"?

I found a link to this community elsewhere, and felt compelled to join. I don't smoke with any regularity (maybe once or twice a year when I'm incredibly stressed, usually due to being stuck at Denver International Airport for way longer than anticipated - funny stories involved but mostly irrelevant) but my best friend and both my parents do, and I cannot get over the stigma smokers face on a daily basis. It's as if it's one of the last socially acceptable prejudices.

My father has had a series of strokes, due to high cholesterol. He can't eat many things he likes anymore, can't drink much since it counter-acts his medication. He's 53, and has been smoking since he was twelve. His lungs are perfectly clear. His doctors have told him flat-out "We don't think it's a great idea, but it's not harming you further and it's the only vice you have left. Go ahead and have a few cigs a day." and yet people still go on and on at length, nagging him about "Oh how can you still smoke, it's the reason you had a stroke, wank wank wank." when they have NO IDEA what the truth is.

The same sort of holds true for my best friend. He's got a very tall, slight build, and is medically prone to spontaneous lung collapse. He also smokes quite heavily. But he's been told time and time again that while yes, it is unhealthy, the smoking has nothing whatsoever to do with the collapses, and yet people still seem to think it's their business to tell him off whenever he does it. A few months ago, we went on a trip together, and since I'm the more organized one I made all the reservations. Trying to find a hotel that would accommodate him was nearly impossible. It seems the only big chain that's not entirely smoke-free anymore is the Hilton, btw, if anyone here is looking to make plans, most of them still seem to have one or two smoking-allowed floors. But even they're reconsidering this policy, and the response I got was always "For my own convenience" "for my own safety" or "for my benefit." If it was to my benenfit to have a non-smoking room, why the fuck would I be asking for one in the first place?

Anyways, what started as a brief intro post has gotten a bit long. So, uh, hi! This is me, and this is why I've joined your group!

Hey there fiends and friends. I've been smoking on and off (mostly on) since I was 14. The only time I try to hide my smoking is when I'm hanging out with my little sisters (18,16,14) and my parents. It's just not worth the hassle.
I work backstage in theatre, so smoking is often the alternative to murdering a particularly obnoxious director. My favorite brands are Kamel Lights, Camel No. 9, and the Camel Frost Signature Blends. What can I say? I like variety.
I thought that y'all would appreciate this little anecdote I witnessed at a local Starbucks. I am sitting outside, just to light up, and a woman approaches the older man smoking at the table next to me. She starts in on him right away "You know smoking is bad for you..." He immediately cuts in with "So is talking to strangers."
The look on this lady's face was absolutely priceless, but it shut her up, and she went to get her extra hot upside down extra foam caramel macciato with 3 pumps of vanilla and a cherry on top.
Definitely filing that come back away!

I have a little problem.

I started smoking on my 18th birthday (the fifth of this month) and I don't have a problem with it at all now. However, when I was younger I was pretty much an advocate for not smoking. I would douse my mom's cigs in water, put them out as soon as she walked away, and scream and yell at her for smoking in the bathroom connected to my room. I don't really know how I should tell her (and the rest of my family because I'm portrayed as being the "good" healthy one) about me smoking. Oh and also I lied to my best friend saying that I don't smoke because all she wants to do is meddle and preach to me like she's my mother. [that last part was a little rant sorry]

How did your family find out about you smoking and how did they handle it?

Wars rage on in Iraq and Afghanistan while Americans face losing their jobs and houses at home but The Post thinks Britney's cigarette trumps it all.

Even more offensive are the misleading coverage and venom directed at Britney and, by extension, all smokers. The caption accompanying a photo of Britney smoking a cigarette in her Beverly Hills home reads, "Britney Kid's Smoke Bomb: Smoking'-hot mama Britney Spears passes on bad habits as Sean Preston, 2, lighter in one hand, grabs her cigs with the other." What you don't see on the cover is that the next set of photos are of Britney grabbing the cigarettes and lighter away from her son.

The news story inside the paper attacks Britney and quotes doctors and advocates vilifying her. David Li of The Post writes, "It's bad enough that Britney Spears can't even keep a lid on her nasty cigarette habit long enough to avoid lighting up in front of her young son, Sean Preston, 2 ½. But then to leave her dirty cancer sticks and lighter within easy reach of a toddler?" Mr. Li then quotes Dr. Jonathan Field, director of the allergy and asthma clinic at NYU Hospital, "The pictures are sad on so many levels... we think of people who smoke as outside of the norm, so just seeing someone smoking is odd -- seeing someone smoking in font of their child is shocking."

Really? Seeing someone smoking is odd? Dr. Field needs to get out more. Walk down the streets of New York and you will see people smoking on every block.

The next person quoted is Russ Sciandra of the American Cancer Society, "Parents who smoke are a poor role model for their children; celebrities who smoke are a poor role model for everyone's children." If Britney is such a bad role model and this act so "offensive," why does The Post so prominently display her doing it for their one million readers?

The feigned righteousness just oozes from the pages of The Post and their "experts." How many people in The Post newsroom have smoked a cigarette in front of their kids? I guarantee that many Post staffers and their readership have had parents who smoked in front of them!

The public education campaigns about the harms of cigarettes and second-hand smoke are impressive. The banning of smoking in restaurants and other public places is something I and most people support. The fact that the number of people smoking is declining is also something to celebrate. But let's not start demonizing smokers and implying that someone who smokes is unfit to be a parent.

They'll be coming after the smokers today, the parents who allow fast food tomorrow, and the ones who have TV sets after that.

Geia sas! As many of you may know, I've been looking for a place online that sells Karelia cigarettes. Well, I found one! I didn't want to write about it incase they tried to rip me off, but their service and pricing are excellent and I got my cigs yesterday. For one carton of George Karelias and Sons it cost me only around $25 including shipping. The site is
http://www.eurocheapcigarettes.com/george-karelias-and-sons.html
Let me tell you, these cigarettes are some of the best I've ever smoked in my life. Smooth, long-lasting, with no aftertaste and with just the right amount of flavour. they come in a gold box and the packs are flat with ten cigarettes on top and ten on the bottom. Seriously, if you want to get your partner or yourself a special treat, I'd highly recommend these. You'll never go back to that stail-tasting stuff. That site also has many other brands, so if you've really got a favourite, they probably have it. In any case, just wanted to share my wonderful smoking experience with all of you.
