"THIS IS YOUR NATION ON WHITE PRIVILEGE"

Prince Georgians should be able to relate to this message - or I should say "most" because a white neighbor of mine told me recently that she doesn't want a black President.

This essay is by Tim Wise:
For those who still can’t grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

I didn't understand it when I was first introduced to it about a decade ago - white privilege is invisible & that's why a much larger percentage of whites think that racism is pretty much over whereas a very low percentage of blacks do. I understand some whites understand it easily, though. It looks like the nation is not getting this, though:
White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because “every family has challenges,” even as black and Latino families with similar “challenges” are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

White privilege is when you can call yourself a “f-----’ redneck,” like Bristol Palin’s boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you'll “kick their f-----' ass,” and talk about how you like to “shoot sh--” for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug....

I censored it because this is supposed to be an open, family-friendly forum. But I think this paragraph is so right on.
White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don’t all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you’re “untested.”
...

White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you.

I like this comparison. Do you know many overt gun enthusiasts who are African American?
White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was “Alaska first,” and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you're black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she’s being disrespectful.
More of Tim's essay is here.

And white privilege is seeing more of your kind on the news and seldom hearing "the criminal was white" even though there are plenty of white criminals who tend to get off easier, too.

I'd like to think white privilege no longer exists in Prince George's County since we have a majority African American population with African Americans in the lead, but I know white privilege persists. We need to talk about it - how it manifests itself here & how we can erradicate it. Check out ADORE & join us for pot luck at 6:30 pm & discussion at 7:30 pm on Oct. 10 - put it on your calendar now! It's at 7400 Temple Hill Rd., Camp Springs.

Pass it on.

You can make a difference - this year more than ever!

If you've ever thought that you can't make a difference - think about this:

This year more than ever you can make a difference because you live in an area that is working together to make a change. Prince George's County is predominantly Barack Obama supporters and they are working together to help make sure people go to vote and to encourage people from other states to join us to help Obama win! What can you do?:

If you're not sold on Barack Obama yet, check out his web site to learn more about what he stands for. Besides a plan to get out of Iraq, I especially like that Obama is for campaign reform so that the election isn't all about how much money can you raise like it is now. Obama also stands for diversity and unity; our country is the most diverse country in the world but it also continues to have a problem with racism (as I've written about in this blog and post newspaper articles that continue to highlight race issues here). If anyone can unite this diverse country, Obama can do it. He also has a lot of support from overseas, which will automatically help with foreign affairs, especially when we need cooperation from ally nations. I also like his stance on faith diversity and social programs. We need to pull together, not like the current administration that thinks the military can act alone while we go about business as usual - BUT it's not business as usual since we're now in a recession and the country has a deficit that might be impossible to get rid of. (Sorry, for starting to rant there - I hope you get the point - LOTS of good reasons to support him.)

Now to DO something, start by joining the Barack Obama community site here. If you're not web-savvy or don't want to join web forums, here are some people you can phone: Hellmut Lotz in College Park 301-226-8673 or 301-704-0930, Michael Watson in Cheverly 240-603-9366, Mel Franklin in Upper Marlboro at 301-325-4642, & Tamara Davis Brown in Clinton at 301-704-0930. They can tell you about how you can help in your neighborhood. Also, don't forget to put Sept. 13 on your calendar for this walk.

Then, you can join groups in your area:Read more... )

Prince Georgians celebrate Obama win in Iowa

The video is now up on YouTube from the Iowa Caucus party sponsored by Women for Obama, Prince George's Co. chapter. Micah Watson is not visible in the video, but he is a member of the county Democratic Central Committee and is speaking to the participants as they watch the reports from Iowa and then their reaction to the report that Obama won. The video is only 2 mins.

There are also still photos on this page.

There were undecideds in attendance, but I think all present were pretty convinced. We discussed the issues. One person, who has a disability & traveled all the way from Richmond to attend, was interested in his views on disability issues. Health care, education, and the war in Iraq were other issues of interest. He has a position paper on each of these issues available here. If you didn't see his speech, you can see it here.

One news report:
...His supporters are being called a new breed of voters, those who pay attention to issues and not race, but does Obama have the cross-over appeal to win in New Hampshire?

"I think the country is beginning to overcome this racial issue both ways," said University Of Maryland Law Professor Larry Gibson.

Gibson believes Obama has exactly what he needs to get it done....

He says it's not the first time a black candidate has captured the majority of white votes in the country or in Maryland....
