Doc, your post on FB is still there. I just replied, "Hello, you're still here."
Maybe your server is having issues.
[edit] And wow. Now it's gone.

5:08 pm - Being the asshole

"You've been working for assholes all your life, now you get to be the asshole." Did I use that somewhere in the Liquor books? Probably.
Yes, you did, it was right before Rickey and G-man held their first staff meeting before Liquor opened.
BTW, I've started my teenage daughter on the Liquor books, and not only does she love them, she says she understands my job so much better now!

8:28 pm - Thomas Kinkade--World's Greatest Hustler
|

setsuled
|
On the subject of Kinkade, I heard Ralph Bakshi tell a great story about him at Comic-Con last year having to do with his film Fire and Ice, which he worked on with Frank Frazetta. From my blog at the time (when the quotes were still fresh in my head);
Painting backgrounds on the movie were a young James Gurney and Thomas Kinkade. Apparently, according to Bakshi, they learned all they knew about painting from Frazetta, which is hilarious in itself. "Kinkade makes a lot of money off garbage now," said Bakshi, at which point the room applauded. "But I will say this for Kinkade; he was the greatest hustler I ever met."
He described Kinkade constantly coming into his office and demanding more money, and they'd get into really heated arguments partly because, as Bakshi said, Kinkade "didn't like Jewish guys from Brooklyn" (Bakshi's a Jewish guy from Brooklyn). Finally, one day Kinkade told Bakshi he and Gurney had to hitchhike across the country. "What d'you mean you gotta hitchhike across the country? We're making a movie!"
But Kinkade eventually wore Bakshi down, and he and Gurney went from town to town getting their pictures in every local paper, talking about the movie and how they were the great artists. When they got back to Los Angeles, Bakshi said Kinkade, "told me he needed a raise. I said, 'why' and he said because he's famous now."

8:03 am - Tragedies

I don't know if brain chemistry is permanently altered after a horrific event, but I think tragedy always changes a person. You went through hell, and there's no way to heal from that but by degrees. (Wasn't it Shakespeare who said "What wound ever healed but by degrees"?) Please don't beat yourself up for not being All Better. Your healing is gonna take however long it takes. No point in putting a timeline on it.
There. There's advice from a complete stranger for you. Take it as you will. : )

Can catastrophic events permanently change your brain chemistry?
I don't know much about it, but I think they can. Depressions can be caused/changed/worsened by shit happening in your life. You gotta do what you feel is right, but I'd say that trying mood stabilizers or whatever could be worth it. I mean, you take pills for when your bodies not feeling right (not you specifically, just in general), so why not take pills when your mind's not feeling right? Of course the price of that stuff you got prescribed is crazy... I don't know anything about the medical system in America, but maybe you can find an alternative?

...she convinced me to try some new "mood stabilizer" called Abilify (who gets paid to think of these names?).
I'm a receptionist at a psychiatric/rehab office. One of our patients calls up at least twice a month to let us know he wants more of his "Vilify." With the price of the drug and the way insurance companies make you jump through twenty flaming hoops to get authorization for coverage of it, I think he chose the better name.

1:22 am - Soft spot for fanfiction.
|

la_fields
|
I've always seen fanfiction as valuable practice for young writers (and I'm speaking from experience). It's a way to get good at dialogue, description, staying true to the character, all while avoiding the huge creative demands of coming up with your own unique characters (it's hard to have enough life experience for believable motivations when you're 12), or coming up with their whole history, their worldly context, etc. You get the grunt work of actually typing out a coherent story down before you get to do the fun stuff like imagining a character with an interesting life and sexy exploits. It's like learning how to parallel park before you hit the freeway.
Fanfiction also, helpfully, gives you a taste of criticism, bitchy politics, and drama, so you'll have a nice thick skin by the time you're putting out original characters to publishers, editors, and agents. Oh, my story got a stiffly-worded form rejection? That's nothing, I once had my mother's honor insulted by a Mod God because I didn't label my subject heading right. Whatevs!
Also, you get your really obvious Sue-ness out of the way before you hit the real world. My characters are pretty transparently me (they've got all my problems, they've got my family, my taste in books), but, you know, Stephen Dedalus is Sue too. What else are people supposed to write about? What else do we know?
Of course, all that being said, I better not ever read fanfiction about my characters. That's beautiful that fans love the stuff, I used to be exactly the same kind of fan, but sweet hell, I'm sure I'd weep blood.

"The older I get, the more I realize that I have not always chosen my crusades carefully enough."
I resemble that statement, thank you very much. But the alternative? To not know, to not learn or to be "young again" (body yes, might be nice, but mind and spirit? double-hell-no.) I may be over fond of realizations that come to one when in one's 40's but what the heck.
I suppose I've learned the most, or at least the harshest, from poorly chosen crusades of more than a few kinds. Hurt like hell it did getting those scars but now I kind of like them. Or at least I wear them without much care anymore. There is much to be said for innocence but please let my drinking buddies be ones of experience. :-)

I just got done watching the interview. I think you did fine. I also loved your hair and your dress, hot stuff!
In public situations I think it's great to have somebody like Alden who's outgoing and expresses himself well so that all the pressure isn't just on you. I like it when somebody else does a lot of the talking so that I can just chime in when I feel it's appropriate. In any case, I thought both of you did a great job of presenting your side of the situation. I was astonished they decided to close down your churches considering how well they were doing.

5:05 pm - Green Goddess

scribbledaway

I know it's as off topic as can be, but it's the closest appropriate forum lol.
I've now been to the Green Goddess three times, with four people. Between us we've tried five different menu items and so far have loved every single one of them. It's very quickly becoming our new favorite place to eat. We haven't been there in the evening, when Chef Chris is there, yet, but we have a friend coming into town tomorrow morning, and we've already told her "You have plans with us for dinner tomorrow night at the Green Goddess." hehe. She's down with it :)
It's the coolest little place....

Dear Poppy,
I'm not quite sure how this happened, but I'm glad it did.
I finished my second read of Hannibal Rising today — it's always nice to visit old characters you love, and especially nice to read about their childhoods.
Scanning the bookshelves looking for The Next Thing, I saw The Value of X eleven feet in the air. I was sure I had read it, but when I monkey-climbed my way up the bookcase to grab it and flipped through it, I realized I had somehow given it a miss.
I've been holding out on reading D*U*C*K (also glaring at me from the same bookcase) for the simple but lame reason that I don't want that world to end. Stumbling across X is like Christmas coming early. And a fitting read after the Thomas Harris. Two books in a row dealing with the emergence of some of my favorite characters.
It's as comfortable and exciting to come across this "new" book in the same way you might pee your pants a little if you unearthed a prequel to Misery, for example.
I'm posting this, rather that emailing, as a public shout out in case some of your readers have not had the pleasure of The Value of X, and am hereby instructing them to trample the homeless in their mad dash to secure a copy.
Also, Harley seems to like it, and my pussy got TASTE, yo! She crawled up underneath the book and took a nap, chasing rabbits in her (what I'm sure are) very gay dreams.

I'd wish you a happy belated birthday Doc, but it seems as though you definitely had one and don't need that, so here's to a great upcoming year!

So sad to learn of Siegfried's illness. Hard decision as to the best thing for Siegfried and for you. Silly animals - they make you love them and then they go and break your heart.

And, as usual, all the cat-talk made me completely forget about the Green Goddess related bit... I have a friend of a friend who's visiting New Orleans with a friend of hers who's some kind of bigwig foodie. Of course I talked the hell out of the place, and sent all the links I could find. My friend said they were definitely going to check it out while they're there. I've no doubt they'll rave about the place...after all, I've seen bits and pieces of the menu...which is truly drool-worthy. I'm completely jealous!!
