| And today's PotC4 rumours are... |
[11 Oct 2008|01:58pm] |
From the Daily Record
[Russell Brand] will play the younger brother of Captain Jack Sparrow...
...Bad-guy Jonathan Sparrow is a major role in the latest episode of the swashbuckling adventure. The new movie will tell the story of Captain Jack's worldwide search for the legendary "fountain of youth". And during it, he will be forced to battle his brother Jonathan - who had been presumed dead. ...And the rumour is that Jack and Jonathan will visit the lost island of Atlantis in a proposed fifth movie.
Hmmm... I like the idea of Jack's brother being a bad-guy. Jack without the honest streak - scary. ;) And as for the 'presumed dead' - in PotC world, that could well mean un-dead, or once-dead, or anything else. It certainly has some angsty potential.

Dear fellow-AS-level-History-taker,
You are (nearly?) seventeen years old.
We are currently doing the Russian Revolution.
Well, before you embarrass yourself further, I would like to inform you that Anastasia (1997) is not based on actual events. The little talking character Bartok? Not real. Rasputin an actual sorcerer? Not real.
plz 2 be educating self on these things BEFORE you mention how much you love Anastasia. :( Because, seriously, the romance between her and Dimitri? FICTIONAL.
Also, it's the House of Romanov. Not "House of Romans".
No love,
Doubtful.

I feel like death on toast.
Fucking sinus infection.
I've not been this sick in a long while. My sinuses are so swollen it feels like my head's in a vise, and my entire body aches; my skin's hypersensitive, so even the slightest touch is painful. I can't swallow without wincing, and my rubbish bin's overflowing with kleenex. To make it even better, I can't go out to get soup or ginger ale or any of the various things one enjoys whilst ill without trekking through the cold and rain for them. Not that I ordinarily mind cold and rain- quite the opposite- but at the moment, they're just increasing my misery.
I need a Mum. That's what one needs when one feels like this- a mum to tuck one into bed and soothe one and feed one soup. Alas, I have only myself.

| National Coming Out Day. |
[11 Oct 2008|04:11am] |
|
I was going to do this after I got some sleep, but it's well after four in the morning, and I'm wide awake. No time like the present, right?
Happy National Coming Out Day!
This year is not so much about me. I will say the basics: I'm a lesbian (with occasional boy celebrity crushes, obviously), and although I'm the most open I've ever been at this point, I've still got a long way to go, mostly because I "pass for straight". If you're interested in more, you can see the last two years to read some tl;dr.
This is a good occasion to mention, I think, that there are two major issues facing LGBT persons in the election: Proposition 8 in California, and Amendment 2 in Florida. The CA one, if passed, will define marriage as between a man and a woman, which invalidates the thousands of marriages performed over the summer/fall for same-sex couples in that state. Nothing will change if it doesn't pass (although, apparently, there's misinformation being spread to the contrary). The FL one is just as bad, as it will define marriage as between a man and a woman and shut out the opportunity for civil unions if passed. If you live in either of these states, please, vote NO on Prop 8 or Amend 2 and protect LGBT citizens in your area.
On a lighter note, in support of equal representation in fandom (and because I thought it sounded fun), I've been doing Femmeslash Fridays in my fanfic community, chomalfoyfics. Yesterday's story, "A Wolf in the Forest", fits the coming-out theme somewhat; it's in the Twilight fandom (really) and involves Leah Clearwater imprinting on a woman. I'll admit that I have my reservations about the story, but in the extended notes, I did a little rant/meta about females in the Twilight books and my issues with them, especially as pertaining to the main characters in the story. I'm probably being too serious about the whole thing, considering the books aren't high literature, but if there's anything that gets me riled up in the Twilight stories, it's gender dynamics.
Finally, I welcome anyone on my flist or the Internet to come out, whether it's LGBTQQ (the last two stand for queer/questioning, usually), a LGBT-friendly straight person, or someone who doesn't like labels. In an age where "values" voters seem to get attention (albeit less than in the last couple of elections), the simple act of coming out to someone against LGBT rights can give them a new perspective on the issue. It might not change anyone's minds, but it's more than worth a try, in my opinion.

Go check it out, and please, go sign up as a 'remixee' (i.e. offering your fic up to be re-written), because I'm really not familiar with any of the offered fandoms. It's not a reciprocal challenge, so offering your fic doesn't mean you have to write for anyone (unless you want to sign up as a writer, as well).
And please, someone slap my wrist the next time I sign up for a challenge.

We all knew it was only a matter of time. I have just completed my first Batman fanfic. This was written because of a conversation involving the last line of the Joker's and I was more or less challenged (mostly by myself) to write it. Unfortunately, it is not Bruce(Batman)/Harvey as I want there to be more of in the world, but still. It's a step in the right direction. So, I bring to you;
Title: Surprise! Fandom: Batman (The Dark Knight) Pairing: Joker/Batman Warnings: Non-consensual, I suppose I should warn.
( ...all it takes is a liiittle push! )

Ganked from fajrdrako :
List five characters you think need a hug.
FMA 1) Ed: for obvious reasons, right? In a recent issue of the manga, he basically says that he knows he might die. Ferfucksake, he's 15/16. 2) Al, whether he's in the armor or not, ditto. 3) Roy. I'm thinking he's drunk, and obviously getting maudlin, and either Jean or Riza gives him an awkward one-armed hug and tells him that he's totally a cool guy, or whatever. 4) Winry, because she knows how hard Ed uses his automail, better than anyone, which means she knows the calibre of fights he's getting into. And bc Ed and Al are her best friends, and there's so little she can do for them. 5) I kind of feel bad for Gluttony, I mean, he really does miss Lust and he's not malicious.
Raws for issue 88 are out. I never bother with raws, but this time ... fight scene, Van Hohenheim is badass, Selim and Al are stuck in a cave together (waitaminute, I know how that one goes! XD), Scar, Kimbley looking as decorative as ever ... no Gen. Armstrong or Roy, damnit! I'm gonna have to wait at least another month, howlsobsigh.
So, I'm in Chicago. Beautiful warm weather. Traveling was fine, even if I cut it a little close. Got through security with an expired driver's license, w00t. It's really good to see Em. We talked about ancient non/normative sexual practices, my thesis, children (right now, we both say that if we had to choose, we'd have a career instead of kids), mental illness, and get this then I told her about fandom. I wonder if I should try to get her to read FMA ...
Her apartment is nice - small, not bigger than she needs it to be. Hardwood floor. She has two cats. Um yeah stuff, don't feel bloggy.

| Friday Ficlet - another PotC drabble |
[10 Oct 2008|11:34pm] |
Just under the wire, another of the James-centric drabbles that may eventually make a series. . .
Flower Moon
Taking Elizabeth for a turn around the garden, James is unable to reconcile this lovely woman with the gangly and inquisitive child he'd once known. With her hair up and her new rose-colored gown, she is a stranger.
Below them the town spreads out, lamps twinkling in windows, and beyond it the ocean rolls and crashes. Forgetting both James and her grown-up manners, Elizabeth leans against the wall, her face bright in the moonlight, inhaling deeply.
She is familiar again, and even more beautiful. A gust of wind ruffles her dress and the sea air is sweet with the scent of lilies. James is smitten.
