1. I just picked up a hard of the Time Out with the bit on me lovin' up on my wall of CDs. The picture of me takes up almost an ENTIRE PAGE, which really magnifies the goofiness of the whole shot. Good thing I bill myself as a "dork gone wild" rather than a "suave sophisticated charmer." Ulp.
2. To continue reporting in the"all things goofy" category, I was at a thift store yesterday because I'm in need of a few sweaters for fall/winter layering purposes. I found three sweaters that I really liked; they were folded so I just looked at one half of each of them while I was flipping through the pile. I wondered why they were only $2.99 since they were in such great condition; when I got them home I found that they were cheap, most likely, because they were embroidered with the crest from a local Catholic boys' school.

According to two members of Team of Trusted Femme Advisers (ToTFA) I can still wear these, I will just need to do so ironically. This might be stretching the possibilities of how much irony and goofiness can co-exist in one person, and perhaps might disrupt the space-time continuum. But we'll see. I'll debut the above pictured sweater tomorrow, perhaps with my favorite dieselfemmewear tie.
3. In still other news, Diana Cage blogged about the "lesbian-fisting-dolphin-frottage-frenzy A-ha moment" I told her about on the show Monday night, and in addition called me "fuckin' hysterical" which fuckin' made my night. She didn't; however, mention ironic, so perhaps I will need to email her picture of me in my super ironic catholic boys' school sweaters. Er, I mean sweater. Wait, if I wore more than one at a time, would that help tip the scales towards the ironic end of the irony-goofy continuum? Or merely make me sweat a lot?

Today, I was at work busily and productively busting through my pile o' paperwork, which is all of what I had to do today, but it was certainly going to take my whole day (and maybe then some). Around 1:00 there was a soft knock on my office door, and in walks my girlfriend! And that totally threw me off, because that wasn't supposed to happen! Clara announced that she was there to kidnap me, and that I should come with her. She basically had to rip me away from my computer (because I was not finished with my pile of work and have a very hard time leaving it!).
But long story short, she brought me up 91 to Woodstock Vermont, and I am typing to you from a Bed and Breakfeast in an adorable little town where the air smells like wood smoke and the leaves and scenery are so so beautiful and it looks like a country home wall calender.
And I have a gorgeous, sweet girl creature sleeping on my chest right now. And no one has ever done anything like this for me before.

An impossible swallow the breast of which stood wizened, triangular, ochre
oiled as the tree heaved a storm you said, a sign the aerial rhythm was off-
kilter for with a sleek and steadfast glance the passerine panicked even a stalwart
you with the season always golden, fraying at your back neck outstretched, expectant
for when the shift comes the inconstant hue cripples even the most determined migrant
as it was in the peaked portent you whispered after matins so too does the inevitable ellipsis
that comes after it takes flight unstick the oil from its stump marking autumn’s crisp calamity
but for the silence of March in the clamoring sycamore freed of your vapid vise
but for a dethroned augur.

October 10th, 2008 Report hits Palin for abuse of power, violating ethics code in trooper case Posted: 08:58 PM ET ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) — Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin abused her power as Alaska’s governor and a violated state ethics law by trying to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from the state police, a state investigator’s report concluded Friday.
“Governor Palin knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda,” the report states.
Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan’s refusal to fire State Trooper Mike Wooten from the state police force was “likely a contributing factor” to Monegan’s July dismissal, but Palin had the authority as governor to sack him, the report by former Anchorage prosecutor Stephen Branchflower states. However, it states that her efforts to get Wooten fired broke a state ethics law that bars public officials from pursuing personal interest through official action.

[10 Oct 2008|07:52pm] |
Lordy, I have been reading so much political news I am beginning to write headlines like them. I will quit this soon, I promise. In about three weeks, more or less.
Seriously, I have been thinking about this. McCain is dropping everywhere in the polls, but especially in some Southern states that the Republicans no doubt previously thought were secure. He is currently only three points ahead in Georgia, for example.
The reasons for that are manifold. Large African-American population, large Hispanic population, new voter registration. The fact that Republicans are starting to lose favor here....because in addition to having run the country as a whole into the ground, they have run Georgia in particular into the ground. Georgia has cut all state budgets by 6% and may be closing down some state parks The University of Georgia, a Research 1 institution, is having to cancel some of its library subscriptions to academic journals in order to meet mandated budget cuts. And so on.
I also think, personally and based on no particular evidence but my own gut feelings on the matter, that Sarah Palin, who was supposed to energize "the base" and get all the social-conservative Southern Baptist types (many of whom used to vote Democrat) solidly behind her, may have had the opposite effect on some of them. There are some logical and some visceral reasons why I think so.
1) "Drill, baby, drill!" An awful lot of the very fervent Christians around here, the ones she supposedly appeals to, are strong environmentalists. They eat organic foods and recycle and believe in "stewardship" as part of their conception of faith and their place in the world. They carpool or walk or ride bicycles and favor carbon caps. They think destroying the environment is tampering with Creation and don't think that drilling up God's coral reefs or Arctic so people can drive big shiny cars is the answer.
2) They don't drink. Baptists are not supposed to drink or sell alcohol. And while many of your garden variety Baptists do in fact drink, they still don't think it's cute to be referred to as "Joe Six-Pack."
3) They are not very clear on what hockey actually is, and definitely don't know from "hockey mom."
4) They do have prejudice, but it cannot be assumed that it will all work one way. To a Southerner, a black man in a suit might look like a familiar and reassuring sight, calling up images of local businessmen and the downtown church on Sunday. Whereas a woman with a squeaky Fargo voice that can cut glass who talks about the "East coast" with tones of disdain might just put their hackles up. Almost certainly does put some hackles up, in a "who the hell is this Yankee* bitch?" kind of way. And a "hey....we're on the East coast!...who are you lumping in with New York, there?" kind of way.
It's also quite possible that Southerners as a whole have a nearer and more visceral folk memory of "hard times," and are more motivated by the economy than most people. But I also think that the Republicans through arrogance and/or complacency either thought that the South was so solidly behind them that they didn't need to bother to appeal to Southerners, or that Obama being black meant they didn't have to. I think they are wrong about that. Obviously, they are wrong about that. I think barring some calamity Obama will carry either Virginia or North Carolina if not both...and he only has to carry one of them to win. (As things currently stand, he only has to carry one of the "toss-up" states to win; McCain will have to carry all of them.) Whether it will make the difference this go-round in this state, I don't know. But the times, they are a-changin'.
Anyway, that's my opinion, which is worth what you paid for it.

*Yes, yes, I know. But around here, "Yankee" = not from around here.

i feel like i'm swimming in beauty.
i think i'd forgotten exactly how jaw-droppingly stunning fall can be. probably because last year at this time, every sign of autumn just filled me with foreboding because i was afraid of winter and cold.
this year, it's doubly different. i have access to warm spaces, and i survived last winter in a tent.
so now i can just give myself over to soaking up the colors of the trees. heck, even the poison ivy is so pretty i'm tempted to roll in it.
but i won't.
