A brave documentary reveals the lives of gay and lesbian Muslims [18 Jul 2008|02:55pm]

Forbidden love

When Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told an audience at New York’s Columbia University in 2007 that his country had no homosexuals, he was soundly booed. His absurd claim that homosexuality is exclusively a Western phenomenon is even more emphatically — and eloquently — refuted in Parvez Sharma’s new film, A Jihad for Love.

Lesbian Partner Financial Mess [08 Jul 2008|06:04am]

calysto
A woman who had been in a committed relationship, living with another woman for fourteen years... having spent only 5 nights apart during those years... wanted to ensure her mate's financial security. Since they were barred from marriage, or even civil union, (in 1991) the woman legally adopted her mate. Unfortunately they ended their relationship a year later. A financial agreement was reached in the split but they vowed never to annul the adoption.

Turns out the woman who adopted her mate was the daughter of a man who controlled much of IBM. When he and his wife died they left a large amount of money to their grandchildren. The adopted mate of his lesbian daughter attempted to claim part of the inheritance as a granddaughter. The family contested the claim and a court annulled the adoption based on lack of residency in the state the adoption was filed in. They had to file in Maine, a state they vacationed in for several weeks every year, because their home state of New York wouldn't allow homosexuals to adopt their partners.

The ruling is being taken to a higher court.

[If your brain hasn't exploded yet, the article is here]

Now, to me, it's way wrong for the adoptee in this situation to claim part of the inheritance... but all this would have been avoided if gays and lesbians were granted the same rights as heterosexuals.

It's a mess of a story but it illustrates the lengths non-heteros must go to in an attempt to secure every-day rights which heterosexuals take for granted.

[USA] Bi Personals Site Boots Trans Member [04 Jul 2008|01:43am]

[ music | "We're Not Gonna Take It" by Twisted Sister ]

as reported in Bay Windows by Ethan Jacobs staff reporter
Wednesday July 2nd 2008 and UPDATED July 3 2008

When Nick Teich created a free account on the online personals site BisexualDatingNow.com last week, he decided to disclose that he is transgender. Perhaps he shouldn’t have.

"They say, tell us about yourself in your own words. And I stated, ’I’m a 25-year old trans guy living in Boston.’ . . . I didn’t want to mislead anyone looking at my profile, so that’s why I put that," said Teich. Within a day he had received three "smiles," which members send to express their interest in getting to know each other.

Teich thought little of his decision until he wrote to the site’s customer service staff about a problem he was having using the site. He exchanged e-mails with a customer service representative named Kiar Dupuis, and after reading his profile Dupuis informed him that the site does not allow transgender users.

"I am sorry, as a transgender, our site would not meet your needs. I am afraid we have to remove your profile," wrote Dupuis, according to an e-mail provided to Bay Windows by Teich. His profile was deleted shortly after he received the e-mail.

House to Hold First-Ever Hearing on Transgender Rights

By Tana Ganeva, AlterNet
Posted on June 25, 2008, Printed on June 27, 2008

On Thursday the House will hold the first-ever Congressional hearing on transgender rights. Introduced by Congressman Rob Andrews, D-NJ, the hearing will examine discrimination faced by transgender people in the workplace.

Andrews' home state of New Jersey offers some workplace protections for transgender people: a law passed in 2006 prohibits discrimination based on "gender identity or expression" in employment, housing and public accommodations. But New Jersey is one of only 13 states (and the District of Columbia) with policies banning discrimination based on gender identity. Most other states have protections that only extend to gays, lesbians and bisexuals; gender identity is not included.

I think this was yesterday, so it should be on their site, I haven't checked as of yet though. Cross posting around.

The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFE campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student

Brazilian President calls homophobia a "perverse disease"
By Sophie Picheta • June 11, 2008

President Lula has announced his support for gay rights )

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/news/articles/2005-7922.html

I am really proud and excited that a leader in the world is actually saying these things. It gives power and strength to those of us who are actively striving for gay equality.

The only thing i don't agree with is the 'criminalization' of homophobia - I don't think it's right if someone discriminates against those who are gay, bi, trans or intersexed, but laws should be made to protect against this - but you can't criminalize a thought.

hello dears,

i'm being obnoxious and cross-posting this all over because i think it's for a good cause.

i'm super tired of not being able to find any places online to chat with other queer characters. livejournal's queer community is pretty much the only place i know to find all you beautiful kids, but i wanted to experiment and made a message board to try to create another safe/happy/queer-friendly place to talk about everything and nothing with people just like you.

right now it's in a super basic stage, i want to see how many people are actually interested in joining and talking and making friends. with more people and more suggestions, hopefully we can make something gorgeous.

thank you, lovelies!

Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act Passes New York State Assembly [04 Jun 2008|09:45am]

snugglebitch
It's my pleasure to announce that the New York State Assembly passed GENDA, the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (A.6584a), yesterday afternoon.

GENDA prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression, real or perceived, in housing, employment, credit, and public accommodations. Although New York State passed SONDA, the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act, in 2002, protections for the transgender community were stripped from the bill.

It is important to note, however, that before this bill becomes law, it needs to pass the New York State Senate. Still, this is a huge step toward ensuring transgender New Yorkers (and hopefully one day, all transgender people) will be safe in their communities.
