Database FAQ - common questions and problems with our address database

This is a postcard SWAP community. Do not join if you are looking only to receive (and not send) postcards.
THE SHORT VERSION:
- Request membership.
- Get approved.
- Get database access.
- Post your address.
- Send AND receive postcards.
Joining the community:
- Request membership.
- Wait until your membership is approved. This might take up to a week or possibly a bit longer.
DO NOT: click on "join community" link more than once. It won't get you approved any faster. - If you are under the age of 18, make sure you have your parents' permission to share your address.
DO NOT: post the address or any other personal information about any other member, anywhere. If you do, you will be immediately and permanently banned. [Learn More...] - Once you are added to the community, you are also added to the database. Log in. [Learn More...]
- You now have to add your address. [Learn More...]
Do this within two week after being added, otherwise you will be banned from the community and you will have to ask for membership again. - If you have any problems with or questions about the database, please read the Database FAQ first. It should answer most of your questions. If it doesn't, please send an e-mail to the address above with your question or problem and we'll try to help.
- It is nice to make an introduction post once you are added, but it is not necessary. Do not write your address in an open post. It is in the database and everyone can access it easily.
- Start sending postcards. Send them to random members. Send them to everybody -- well, make sure that the people you send to are in the "Active" group. [Learn More...] There are no set rules on how you choose people to send to. Well, except for one: It's good karma to send a postcard in return for those you receive.
- It's a good habit to occasionally post in the community that you received postcards. That way the people who sent them know that their postcard was received safely.
- Please keep your information in the address database up-to-date. Also, please use proper grammar, capitalization, spelling and punctuation. We know that nobody is perfect and mistakes happen; it just doesn't look nice when UR lIsTing iZ aLL tiPEd lyk dis, kay?
Leaving the community:
- It is highly suggested that you make a post to the community stating that you are leaving. Why? So that everyone knows to stop sending stuff to you. Some people don't visit the database all the time, and instead use their own address book. It's no fun sending stuff to someone who won't return the kindness. Also, by notifying us that you are leaving it will help us keep things cleaned up.
- Delete your address from the database. [Learn More ...]
- Email the maintainers at the address indicated above so we can remove your login information from the database.
- Leave the community. DON'T click that unless you actually want to leave.
- Another option, if you need to take a break from the community but don't want to totally quit it, is to go "Inactive." There's no set time limit on how long you can remain inactive, but we'll probably question your membership if it gets to be too long. Once you're ready to start sending postcards again, change your status in the database back to "Active." [Learn More...]
Other community rules:
- You must have an active, non-deleted LiveJournal to join. Members with deleted journals (ie: a line through them) will not be added or, if currently a member, will be removed from the community.
- All members must have their addresses listed in the database -- this is pretty much a requirement to be a member. Please do not post and require that members post their address in the comments because you are too lazy to look them up in the database. Now, if you are having problems accessing the database, let us know instead of avoiding the issue entirely.
- Standard community rules apply:
- Be nice and don't start trouble (aka: trolling). If you have a problem arise with someone please bring it to our attention so we can deal with it. We don't read all the comments on every single post, so it's possible that we miss any disagreements. Anyone that causes problems or otherwise makes the community a not-fun place to be can and most likely will be banned.
- No off topic posts -- they will cheerfully be deleted.
- Please try to refrain from advertising your community in here. That's not what the group is for, and is completely inappropriate when the community is not postcard related or is basically a clone of this community. If you have a really awesome swap- or postcard-themed community that you think we might like, leave us a comment or send us an email and ask if it would be okay to make a post about it.
- No "spam" posts -- do not post links to get a free iPod, to unrelated eBay auctions, etc.
- Posted photos must be relevent to the community. Large photos (over 450 pixels either direction) or numerous photos should be placed under a lj-cut tag [Learn More...]. You may also include a link to an off-LiveJournal photo album instead of posting photos online.
It sounds like there are a lot of rules, but it's really not bad once you get the hang of things. These are all in place to make things a little easier for all of us in the long run.
