I found the following interpretation of GLaDOS to be very interesting. And disturbing if you hadn't considered this way. The article is short but, as I said, an interesting point of view. It also leads to other Portal articles by the same author. Anyway, here's the link:

http://www.game-ism.com/2008/04/04/still-alive-shes-free/

Okay, hi. I'm Mondai, and I'm new to the community. I've only had Portal for just over a week. And I was almost crying at the end of level 17. ^^~♥ But I've decided that my <del>Annika Abigail</del> Companion Cube buddy is in a better place, so I'm not sad, anymore. And I'm not ready to give out full details, just yet, but I have a project in mind that I'm totally psyched about. But first, I'd like some opinions from you guys.

View Poll: #1210528

Also, I'm wondering what you like/don't like about them all, but that could get long, so there's no room in the poll for it. ^^;

Also, clearly, there's probably going to be spoilers in here if you haven't played the game, yet. ;3 But I think I'm one of the last to play, so this warning's probably not necessary.

Anyway, let me know~ ♥

Giant plushie Companion Cubes + kits available for commission!

Hello all! A while back I posted about a life-sized Weighted Companion Cube plushie I had made, with my own pattern. Now I've made a few more, perfected my methods, and am now ready to take commissions on them! Here's more info:

These cubes are made from polyester fleece, and stuffed with fiberfill. The body of the cube and the heart accents are machine-stitched for strength, while all of the outer pieces are hand-stitched for detail. The lines from the heart to the edges are glittery fabric paint. Squishy, comfy, and to-scale with the game Cubes, as they measure 15" along each side. These make super-cool footrests, cushions, and pillows. They're much larger than the official Valve cubes, which are merely 6" wide.

You can get your cube in one of two ways!
Commission a completed cube from me. These cubes take me several hours to make, and contain around 5 lbs. of fiberfill, so they are priced accordingly, at $60 plus shipping.
Or, buy a Companion Cube kit! You'll get all of the fabric pieces to make your cube, and the rest is up to you. You'll supply the stuffing of your choice, needle, thread, fabric paint, pins, and the elbow grease (and maybe cake). Comes with complete instructions and advice on choosing your materials. $30 plus shipping.
I'll ship internationally! Paypal is preferred, but a money order would be okay too. Let me know which option you're interested in before you order, and I'll tell you how soon you'll have your Cube or kit!

E-mail me at drakeducaine@yahoo.com and we'll get everything worked out!

portal problems =(

I got OrangeBox back on black friday when it was half price at Best Buy, and so far Portal is the only game from it that i've installed (stupid "installs by default on the system hard drive" feature). I've played it fine up until moving a month or so ago. I'm now on Verizon FiOS internet which is even faster than my previous ISP, just for reference.

Now when I launch portal, it comes up only as far as the main menu but the display is extremely lagged and the sound is stuttering. It's a chore of clicking and patience to even get into the options menu. Anyway, if I let it sit there, I eventually noticed that every so often, a message flashes in the upper-right saying "Warning: connection problem. auto-disconnect in 25.7 seconds". The message flashes nearly too fast for me to read, and it was only through staring and perseverance that I pieced together what all it said. The weirdest part is, the 25.7 seconds never reduces, it stays at the same number (though i'm not sure it's *always* that number specifically, it's always something close, and never actually counts down). A few times I've been able to wait, or mess with the steam in-game settings, until the message stops appearing and the game starts responding just fine (at which point it's perfectly playable again).

I haven't been able to find that much info on this problem, other than some people having the "warning" error appear when trying to connect to TF2 servers, or in the middle of a game -- but i'm playing Portal, and not connecting to ANY server. I've even disabled the steam in-game stuff, which did nothing, and starting steam in offline mode, which made the problem worse if anything. I've tried setting my router to port-forward for Half Life 2 (it has a bunch of auto port forward settings, and HL2 is the closest thing to Orange Box / Portal), and that makes no difference either. I'm not sure whether it's my new internet connection or an issue with the zillion steam updates that ran when I finally got internet back... but something is definitely messed up. Anyone have any insight for me? I'm kinda down to my last resort here...

It occurs to me that the Companion Cube present in the ending cake scene and the menu you get after completing the game may not be the same one that you incinerated in Chamber 17; after all, there's another one waiting in the Vital Apparatus Vent after GLaDOS gives you the one you use throughout the level, presumably for the next test subject and/or in case you somehow manage to destroy the first one. It's entirely possible that this backup Companion Cube and/or a third one is the one shown alongside the cake.
