I finally looked at the lyric translations for some of the songs.

And "HEY!"'s lyrics are fun and not bordering on stereotypes or sexism. Totally.

Some gems:

The words ‘leave me’ and ‘it’s the end’,
Although you try to control me with however you feel,
I know it’s just you’re whining,
Nothing will change though you do that

. . .

Call up, call up; stop testing me now,
Call up, call up; it’s getting hard for me because of that
Why do girls always want to get assured?
They always make a guy’s heart waver

. . .

(I say) Hey don’t bring me down!
Don’t think of me as someone who’ll keep moving,
At the last moment (my only girl), look at whose your man

. . .

Don’t ever try to make me hesitate again,
Just like me for the way I am

. . .

GUHHHHHHHH.

I was wondering why Junsu looked like he felt manlier than usual and everybody looked like they were showing off their shit. Especially Yunho, but Yunho doesn't count because he always looks like that when he's dancing.

Basically, this is the cap-friendly version of "HEY!":

Chest thumping.

Crotch grabbing.

You like dem muscles?

I rip my shirt down so you see my chest.

I smash.

The MAN convergence.

Angry faces.

Thrust.

Thrust. (So hard I look like I'm dying.)

Thrust.

I AM A MAN. ROARRRRR.

PENIS.

Yup. Hope you weren't reading this near your parents / your non-kpop friends and/or family / at work. The rest is harmless but the phallus word in red might not be.

And "Mirotic" is essentially the same thing but there's a quality of seductiveness about it so it's not as blunt. It actually has an even more possessive manner to it. What's up with the point of view of the song being the boy talking to the girl, yet the girl's the one who ties them all up in the MV? And then it's the group of predatory guys who circle around the girl towards the end? (Ten bucks also say that some fangirls are so delirious at this point that they're like "YES! FIVE HOT GUYS! COME AND VICTIMIZE ME TOO!")

Like 30 seconds into the song, people are bending over to hit the notes, leaning back to raise mikes, making hand gestures to signal kingdom come. Okay, I get it, this is an emotional song. Anyway, the bridge is still good and I was verrrry distracted by Yoochun's body wrap of a sweater. I was trying to figure out how one would put that piece of thing on.

Hey! (Don't Bring Me Down): AHA WHAT THE EFF ARE THEY WEARING. The impressive group dynamic is completely lost when they strut in circles like a group of construction workers on the loose. And if I didn't know who they were previously and I got a glimpse of those RACCOON TAILS, I wouldn't have thought these were the current "gods" of Kpop making a grand comeback. Seriously. Stop taking stuff from your T Tour and bringing it back.

And performance-wise, it was alright. I think something about this lipsynched made it not as good as it could've been. Their choreography seems really exaggerated/aggressive just like their past SMP/YYJ pieces. Near the very end of the song when Yoochun sings "I needa girl...." and they all start thrusting every which way ------ LMAO.

Mirotic: No complaints about this one. The only thing is that the cameraman should've panned out on some parts to catch all of them dancing while Changmin had his solo line off to the side. Junsu kept making 'I'm-too-hot-for-you' faces when the camera zoomed on him. Hot. I still really like Jae Joong's 'ad-libbing' at the end with the "yay yaaaaay" noises and Junsu's "You're my special love now." Soooo good.

And backup dancers, you've done a good job with the boys for three albums but I think it's time to bounce out. There was absolutely no need for the backups in this song, it just made the stage look like what happens when Super Junior performs as a group.

Also, this gem:

Yunho takes this too seriously. JJ & CM's poses are minimal, Junsu doesn't have a pose, Yoochun ditched his distressed-sailor pose, but Yunho is STILL. RIDICULOUS.

Of course, track-by-track review. Oh and DBSK fans, don't read my review before listening to the album yourselves. (This is before me having listened to it yet.) Enjoy it for what it's worth without someone possibly changing your mind. I think the boys deserve at least that :)

Mirotic
I didn't like this as much as I thought I was going to when the song released a week ago. I think I had issues with the speed of the song not being fast enough but I've definitely come to appreciate it for the slower pace, actually. The pace allows a better dancing + singing combo when they're doing this completely live, and that's always good. I hope they always sing this song live, whether or not the shows they go on require it. God, I'm anticipating this like hell.

Wrong number
Okay, there is NO WAY the beginning of this song didn't come from an American one. SHITTTT this is going to bother me till I figure it out.

About the song -- uhhhhh once they start singing, "You've got the wrong number," I started to laugh :D The chorus is just terribly lame, but everything else is good. AND I LOVE JAE JOONG'S "RAP." How is he even better than Yunho in this?! That's just sad.

노을..바라보다
Hmmm.....maybe I'll learn to like this song more after a few more listens. It's not bad, and I like the slightly quick pace (uptempo ballads, I tell ya) but it's got a kind of predictable melody. Junsu's line towards the end, holy moly.

Did Yoochun really just say, "More than my breathe"? Oh, The Virginia.

CRAZY LOVE
Yoochun's lame line in the beginning made me think this was going to be a Japanese summer single...But ah, I see what you're doing there, SM. Techno-lite? I enjoy this.

HEY!(Don't bring me down)
Love this song. To death. I really like the beat, the chanting, the vocals, everything. And omfg, 192kbps version reveals more complicated track-layering that I expected. GUSH!

넌 나의 노래
<s>This is the one that Junsu penned the lyrics to, correct?</s> No, he didn't, but that doesn't really affect the melody of this. Anyway. I really like the piano-beginning, it's really relaxing to listen to. Oh man, I'm so glad I like this song. I love how they all sing "You're my melody," in that alternating-octave way they do. (Sorry, I can't really describe music with technical terms so bear with me here.) This isn't anything ground-breaking but it's pretty to listen to.

----ACCAPELLA AT THE END IS BEAUTIFUL. BEAUTIFUL. It was tear-inducing good. Wow.----

무지개
Why does the beginning of this sound like 60's elevator music? I thought this was going to be the Korean version of "Rainbow," which would've made me happy, but sadly, it is not. In fact, this song downright sucks. Why did we just transport back in time...?! I feel like they should be wearing some bell-bottoms and doing the Saturday Night Fever dance.

낙원
Why does Yoochun always have to make those gutteral "Oh"'s??? Another song with the use of a harp -- it gives me a Rufus Wainwright vibe, which is definitely good. I like the experimenting in this song. I like the parts of the song where you can really hear Yoochun & Yunho's bass. Is it just me or has Yunho's bass gotten a lot deeper? That's the feeling I got when I first heard the accapella version of "Kimisuki" but I definitely hear it more in this song. That makes me really happy. :D I've told you I like deep voices, right? Right.

악녀(Are You a Good Girl?)
Arrrgggghhh this weird theme of these wrong-decade-techno sounds. And also, the title? I can imagine someone asking Jae Joong that when he's tied up a la Mirotic music video.

Flower Lady
This is a very nice song. Not loving it yet, but I can see myself enjoying it a lot more after a couple more listens. I'm really loving the pace of their ballads so far, because I think it's easier NOT to be categorized as a boring-ballad-focusing-on-vocals-but-not-much-else when it's uptempo.

잊혀진계절
Just like I thought Jonghyun's solo on SHINee's album was very ZZZZZ-inducing, Jae Joong's on this is the same to me. I don't think any solo Jae Joong sings can ever beat "Insa." Maybe I should stop using that song as a measuring stick for all his future solo endeavors...

Love in the Ice (Korean Version)
I'm so glad this ended up being the only Korean remake of their Japanese songs. Not a bad choice of song to remake, but I thought that if they had to remake, they would've gone for things like "Darkness Eyes," or "CLAP!".

When Jae Joong first sings this song, I was amazed at how right it sounded in Korean. And maybe it was just this particular rip of the song, but I thought Junsu's infamous bridge solo was REALLY swallowed up by the loud background track. The Japanese version seemed to be quieter when he sang his lines? I dunno, but this song will always be one of the biggest testaments to their vocal abilities and why no other peer boyband comes even close.

General thoughts:
Hmm, when I first listened to their third Japanese album "T" in its entirety, I was realllllly amazed. But in retrospect, they only came up with a handful of new songs for that album, filling the rest of the album with tracks we've already listened to. Still, I really liked the massive influx of experimenting that went on in the new tracks. "CLAP!" might not have been my favorite new song, but seriously, the Indonesian influences in the background beat made me so happy. "Darkness Eyes" was great and refreshing. "TRICK" was definitely a trip (almost wrote trick, heh) and something we never encountered before with their music, even if it turned out to be a huge marketing ploy.

With this Korean album, they definitely did a lot of experimenting too but it wasn't exactly stuff that I enjoyed completely. This comes down to preference, and I think the Korean album was definitely going for a "Korean style," whereas the Japanese tracks were going for a quirkier, more upbeat sound. That makes sense, because their Jpop songs are definitely really sunny and summery songs. Their Korean songs tend to be really grounded in feelings, sentiments, and all the good ballad-y stuff. Even if you don't understand the language, you come away listening to that album with those ideas.

I'm not sure if their latest Japanese album was my favorite or whether the Korean one is my favorite. My favorite songs off the Korean album definitely outweight my love for the "T" album, but is that fair when I really liked almost all the Japanese tracks and couldn't say the same about all the Korean tracks? Idk, I confuse myself too, but for now, I'm glad I can say that they outdo themselves with each coming album.

And my favorite song off this album? "넌 나의 노래 (You're my Song)." :)

+ TOP & Hyunjoong Special Stage. Two of the hottest people in Kpop boy band members on one stage. Sorry, brb, punching hormones in the face so they simmer down. (Seriously, this needs to stop. Kpop needs to give me a break. I think all of Kpop is trying to outdo one another this fall.)

+ Skimmed "Come Play" with Big Bang last night, will cap some funny shit later. Let's just say that TOP is hilarious and G-Dragon strikes me as a LOT less annoying and less pretentious asshole-ly when he talks and laughs, instead of staring emo-ly in front of a camera wearing stupid shit.

+ One of the latest news clips of DBSK performing "Hey! (Don't Bring Me Down)" is great because even the camera man's common sense tells him to focus on Junsu when the crazy pelvic thrusting begins. Smart man. It was no different than watching a JS-focused fancam. And when I can ignore that Yoochun's hair is asymmetrical, I like it a lot more. He should've stuck with what he had for the SM TOWN concerts.

+ Apparently, a female named "haihm" produced "The Story Has Just Begun (이제 막 시작된 이야기)" for DBSK's third album. I love her already because that song is my favorite from that album after my OJBH love died down. That song sounds really different from all the other ballads on that album. It experiments with some light, ethereal-y sounds and the vocal layering is really nice to listen to. :)

+ I really, really, really love "Hey! (Don't Bring Me Down)." More than "Mirotic," I think.

+ Doesn't the initial plot of the MV strike you as really whack? "I just just hanging with my homies without a care in the world in this MAZE thing and then took a turn into a dark corridor, y'know?? And then this scary bitch appeared in front of us! I TOTALLY HAD NO IDEA THERE'S SHIT IN MAZES. I will act very surprised now!"

+ I really, really want to know who the lady is behind that veil. I am betting large bucks that it is Victoria Song. It kind of looks like her, and all of SM's current other actress ladies are too above making MVs for boybands now, methinks -- Lee Yeon Hee is smooching Song Seung Hun and Go Ara is modeling, filming stuff, being an ambassador. And if any of them really were the lady, they're too high-profile (kind of) for SM not to say "MV featuring x, y, and z!" It'd make sense for it to be Victoria Song; after all, SM used their own factory of trainees in SuJu's Pin-Up Boy movie, how sick is that. Couldn't even hire some extras?!

+ Junsu is the only one who has not gotten any hotter, face-wise or body-wise. But that's never really where Junsu's sexual attraction (sexual prowess? sexual attraction? asexuality???) lies -- it comes in his performances. He is an amazing performer and he becomes super attractive when you see him sing and dance. Extra points if he really has to strain when singing. Best part of the Mirotic performance (here for reference) is 2:26 when they start pumping their fists and doing random gyrations. Okay, and then Junsu does the best thing when he sings "You're my super special love now." So. Much. Passion. My mind can't even wrap around it. I LOVE it when he sings like his voice is being ripped out (does that sound really violent?). He doesn't do soft and sweet singing very well, imo.

DO I COME OFF AS REALLY SUPER HORNY LATELY? HOPE NOT.

Well, that made this performance even better for that exact reason. Hoshit. I am finally excited for this song. I listened to this song only on loop for the past two days because I was very sad that I didn't like it as much as everyone else did, and I wanted to.....but the mojo is finally here. :D

<lj-embed id="91" />

+ I seriously thought the veiled red lady was a scary crossdresser

+ Changmin's hair looks SO DAMN GOOD

+ Camera angles variation - REALLY adds to the song and the feel of getting lost, trapped, and the confusion

+ Even if this song isn't explicitly screaming "SEX!" (I think Jae Joong's bondism is enough), the choreography is definitely oozing of sex. There's a lot of implied sexuality in their choreography and I'm glad. Phew, finally.

+ Yoochun breaking out of that glass cage = stealing from Koda Kumi's "Freaky" performances.

And your resident NYCSEOULTOKYO'er just texted me with "Asa!" about DBSK. And here's their 너 아니면 안되는걸 (Romantic) performance from the show:

<lj-embed id="89" />

+ My favorite voice in the group is Onew's, but man, you can totally see why Jonghyun is lead singer. That is DISCIPLINE.

+ I seriously can't believe they won their first #1 now. I thought they would've won one for their Noona song, but anyhoo, long overdue.

+ Minho was all stoic and steady and teared only a teensy bit. And then backstage fancam -> here. Super Junior's done a lot of crappy-cute MVs but this one is genuinely cute without the need-to-throw-up feel. I was grinning through the whole entire thing. Though, who else is really bothered by the way Shiwon says "ben pao" in the very first line of the song? ._.

And Kyuhyun, I will love ya till I keel over. I don't know how he makes a song like this sound like it's an actual song that requires vocal strength or skill. He makes ANYTHING sound good. Can I just say how happy I am that he looks happy? Because when SJM first started out, I just felt like he really really really hated it. He looked more tired than anyone else on the team (I know he was still semi-recovering and his stamina's probably not as good as everyone else's) but he just looked like he really didn't want to be saying the same remedial Chinese over and over on the variety shows. It didn't help that he was fainting from heatstrokes and stuff (though some fans are batty for blaming it on being in SJM's fault; that's just China's nasty weather). It made me feel bad but he looks like he's finally enjoying it. And let this not be a reason for anyone here to start wars because this isn't a Pro15 or Only13 or Freaking2342930482 war.

And why is there always such a disparity between the least-clothed member and the most-clothed member? Jae Joong is freaking wrapped up in that red/black bandage shirt!

- Yaaaay Zhou Mi lovin'! :)

- WHAT WHAT WHAT WHAT. Ooooooh my goodness -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7nQTmKJJMk&fmt=18

- ZLY still goes in and out of shaky-ness during her lives but I'm glad I lived to see a live performance of One More Try...? Eh her voice and abilities are starting to be an enigma to me. I think with someone like ZLY, you need to start her with lives, even if they're bad, and keep going until she actually aces all of them, and then start letting her lipsynch, exactly like how SHINee's been doing it. (I want to barf all over her bangs though.)

Brb, gotta explode.

The story doesn't sound like it's too interesting as a live action version (as opposed to manga) but OMG eyecandy? I'm totally watching this for Yoo Ah In, the boy needs to be in everything from now on. And this story is all bout the boy/boy, so that should be super interesting.

Hilarious synopsis from Amazon:
A high school crush; a world-class pastry chef; a former middle-weight boxing champion...and a whole lot of cake!

Ono has come a long way since the agonizing day in high school when he confessed his love to handsome Tachibana. Now, some 14 years later Ono, a world-class pastry chef and gay playboy has it all. No man can resist Ono's charms (or his cooking skills!) but he has just found a new position under a man named Tachibana. Can this be the only man who resisted his charms, and if so, will the man who once snubbed the "magically gay" Ono get his just desserts? And how in the heck did a former middleweight boxing champion wind up as Ono's cake boy?

But, somebody has said that it looked a bit like Jennifer Lopez's I'm Glad...and that doesn't help, even if it's a minor detail. And the English version is freaking terrible. The really bad set (are they dancing on the moon???), the really out-of-style "gangster" hip-hop clothes, and is BoA resorting to those stripper-like movements near the end of the preview? :(

The song: Is decent. I really don't like the intense digitalization of her voice. She can do this song without that, and it would help with showing off her vocals, the song isn't even vocal intensive. Obviously they're going towards the hip-hop/dance genre for BoA in America but the people working with SM on this can probably produce a better song.

BoA can sing like hell and she can dance like hell but I feel like in order for her to be successful here, it's going to take more than that. The way she and SM are at it, it's like they're students who do all of their homework, know their basics and foundations, but that doesn't mean they'll ace the test, or even pass it. It helps more that they're prepared (ahem, Rain), but it's definitely gonna take more than that. For one, her English needs to be at least as good as Se7en's, or even better. It's not gonna work if she speaks like she does here (0:33). That was a little while ago and I can only hope she's gotten a lot better by now. I truly, truly think that for any of these Asian stars to cross over successfully, they have to get the language down. It's not going to help them when they can't do full English interviews with the people who matter (I'm guessing at least MTV without Suchin Pak as the hostess) or if they've got interpreters whispering in their ears after every sentence.

But, you've got to give credit to SM for actually going through with this. BoA actually has a fully functional site (though they did misspell "birth" in "Date of birth" on her profile) and she has a totally tight schedule (with actual dates!) so I'm hoping for the best though I'm going in with no expectations.

I don't think she's ever going back to Korea, guys. And I really, truly just about died when Minho SANG A LINE. A WHOLE LINE. HE HAS A LOVELY VOICE. But as soon as 5 members of Super Junior joined them, moment was killed and the song actually got worse, wtf? I did enjoy the huge amount of man-love between Minho and Eeteuk at 1:55 though.

I'd really love to see SHINee do a DBSK song (Purple....Line? *gulps*) but I doubt SM will ever allow it because SHINee actually has a huge chance of doing as good as -- if not better -- than DB. Maybe it'll happen once DB gets back to Korea. ^^
