| Hell Freezes Over |
[11 Oct 2008|03:30am] |
And now, the completely unexpected.
If I had to choose between the two candidates for President, I couldn't bring myself to vote for John McCain. I have no faith in him whatsoever, and I think that Palin is too unpredictable. This is despite the immense amount of political comedy she would bring us all for the next four years.
This country's in trouble. Barack says he can fix it...and I'm like, why not? Seriously. Give him a chance to clean this mess up. He wants the job, so that the hell. Let him give it a shot...and if he screws up, he doesn't keep the job four years from now. Simple as that.
It seems pretty logical to me. You look at the applications you get in. You give a couple of calls back for interviews, and you pick from the people who sound more responsible. And less crazy.
And besides, talk about sticking it to the man. I consider myself chaotic neutral at heart, and this is the ultimate sticking of it to said man. A wrench is being thrown into the monkeys, and I'm all for it.
Interesting times ahead...let's do this thing.

Went to the Oral Surgeon today for a check up. He made the fracture at the joint of my jaw sound worse that it sounded before, but whatever, I'm stuck with my worse jaw from now on. Nothin's gonna change that. I'll be able to eat food in about a week, maybe two, tops.
I decided to go look at the book store at the Fountain Valley Library. They didn't have anything I wanted, but the library it's self did. I paid two dollars for a replacement card and checked out the only Kerouac they had. On the Road the Original Scroll. Kerouac sat at his typewriter, high on benzodrine and busted out the 125,000 word first draught on one long scroll in one long paragraph. 1/3 of the book is about Kerouac and his friends who traveled the road with him. The rest of it is the whole unedited thing, and even though I just got done with the original published version I can't wait to dive into this unedited version.
I had Cameron pick me up with the sewing machine so it'd be at his house when i have time to teach Carly to sew. We smoked a bowl and went to the dog park. I had them leave me there so I could read my book. As I was walking through the dry patch of grass that used to be a pond and I saw a guy sitting on a blanket. He looked like Pops (Mr. Kim E Link) baseball cap, bike with a rack on it, shorts, t-shirt, blanket. I looked at him, and told him that I thought I knew who he was. I was really looking to see if I could find ol' Pops hiding in his bush. I sat down and talked to this homeless guy, his name is Edmund, he's an alcoholic, and has been homeless for ten years. He's a very nice sort of person, didn't seem to mean any harm. I sat and talked to him for a good hour an a half, maybe two.
It got dark and I made my way to the bus, taking a detour by Pops' spot, then his storage unit, no luck, no sign of him. I took the dollar Edmund gave me in exchange for a smudge stick (his idea, his donation) and bought a lotto ticket at the gas station. I forgot Katie's brother works there. I told him I'd see him on sunday for the all too captivating (ha) True Blood.
I had just hit Warner when I heard "Whoa, buddy! Hey! Wait!" It turned and it was Pops, I stood there and talked to him for a while, I had to get home to eat, I was getting hungry, but we agreed to meet later in the week for sure.
I was thinking of calling Cody on my walk from the bus stop to my house, but don't like calling her anymore, she's usually doing something fun and I don't want to bother her in the middle of anything. Almost as soon as I put my phone back in my pocket she calls and we talked for a little bit. She changes her mind a lot, and I love listening to her brain go. It's always something different with her, she's always changing her mind and her direction, and that's great, really. She's out on a new adventure, a new part of her life, the part where she figures out who she is and what she wants. Dig on that, man, doesn't it make you want to do the same? I know that's how I feel. Soon enough, though, I'll hit my own road, and take it slow. Part of me wants to do it alone, but the other part knows that I'd be incredibly lonesome not having someone to share beautiful moments with.

I should be featured on VH1's "Best Week Ever" because my week has been, for real, kick-ass.
Wednesday I climbed Mt. St. Helens (yes, the volcano that blew up pretty bad in the early 80s). I felt like a supreme badass once I made it 3/4 up the last stretch (which is this awful completely snow covered icy really steep schlep that was "HORRIBLE!" as I apparently remarked to my climbing buddy) and realized I was going to make it. Somewhere in the rockfields that were pretty hard, too, I looked up and saw the snow covered part that I would have to schlep up and for an honest moment I didn't think I'd make it. Then I realized I was already out there, and as long as I kept putting one foot in front of the other I would eventually make it. It took 4 hours to get to the top; 7 hr 45 minutes for the whole ordeal. I can't believe I actually woke up at 5:30am to do it. Driving to Washington in the dark was fun. I wasn't even really that sore the next day. I was pretty pumped with myself, and the climb was really fun, especially with Alex. At one point I was laughing so hard it hurt. Hanging out at the top was also amazing. I really want to climb more things!! You may or may not be able to see pictures here
Thursday I had training down at corporate. Corporate! I had to wake up early for this, too, but it was completely worth it. It was like a work field trip. Good things: it reminded me sooo much of b-school at OU (i loved it). I learned/was reinforced a lot of good things, I got FREE hiking socks (to go with my 56 cent pair) that are massively comfy and I am going to wear everyday around the apartment, and FREE Subway lunch with kettle chips and cookies (!!) and got to wander around corporate. Then we went to the employee store (at this point I am still on the clock, and getting paid to shop). Basically the employee store is a magical land for all Columbia employees where everything is sold without the final markup (so only warehouse markeup). Basically this means I get 60% or so off of what they sell the stuff for in the store. BEST PART? The employee store has Mountain Hardware stuff (more technical hardcore outdoorsy really awesome stuff) so naturally I impulse bought this bright turquoise soft-shell which I am IN LOVE with (MRSP $130, I got it for $56). So basically I got paid to learn cool stuff, see the campus, get socks, eat subway, and travel time.
Thursday evening I wasn't feeling up to hitting Laurelthirst for some live bluegrass, and upon hearing this Fauxhawk (my mt climbing buddy) said he'd come hang out with me and have a chill night in. I made chili and he brought two giant things of wine and flowers :o) which is really weird because I saw a guy with roses waiting at the bus stop earlier in the day and since then I had a weird, weird feeling I was going to get flowers soon...WEIRD.
Man, I can't believe my luck. Or maybe it isn't luck- maybe I earned all this and was due for some awesomeness. Oh yes, and I applied for a job at corporate with Columbia *crosses fingers*
I think I'm going to make myself unavailable on Saturdays at the store.
Tomorrow I get to play beer pong, which will make me seriously happy and remind me of OU, and go to some bars downtown.
PORTLAND IS SO BADASS.

Note to self: do not attempt to play Silent Hill in the dark while the roommates are out of the house.
EDIT: Oh, Chris & Crew, that Metal Gear producer I was talking about is Ryan Payton.

| Holy poo that's a big 'un and other weekend thoughts |
[10 Oct 2008|08:53pm] |
1. I just picked up a hard of the Time Out with the bit on me lovin' up on my wall of CDs. The picture of me takes up almost an ENTIRE PAGE, which really magnifies the goofiness of the whole shot. Good thing I bill myself as a "dork gone wild" rather than a "suave sophisticated charmer." Ulp.
2. To continue reporting in the"all things goofy" category, I was at a thift store yesterday because I'm in need of a few sweaters for fall/winter layering purposes. I found three sweaters that I really liked; they were folded so I just looked at one half of each of them while I was flipping through the pile. I wondered why they were only $2.99 since they were in such great condition; when I got them home I found that they were cheap, most likely, because they were embroidered with the crest from a local Catholic boys' school.

According to two members of Team of Trusted Femme Advisers (ToTFA) I can still wear these, I will just need to do so ironically. This might be stretching the possibilities of how much irony and goofiness can co-exist in one person, and perhaps might disrupt the space-time continuum. But we'll see. I'll debut the above pictured sweater tomorrow, perhaps with my favorite dieselfemmewear tie.
3. In still other news, Diana Cage blogged about the "lesbian-fisting-dolphin-frottage-frenzy A-ha moment" I told her about on the show Monday night, and in addition called me "fuckin' hysterical" which fuckin' made my night. She didn't; however, mention ironic, so perhaps I will need to email her picture of me in my super ironic catholic boys' school sweaters. Er, I mean sweater. Wait, if I wore more than one at a time, would that help tip the scales towards the ironic end of the irony-goofy continuum? Or merely make me sweat a lot?

| Measure 65, The Open Primary |
[10 Oct 2008|01:57pm] |
The Open Primary is a ballot measure in Oregon whereby everyone can vote, in the primary, for anyone they want. The top two vote receivers will move on to the general.
The Open Primary supporters claim the measure is about reducing extremist and supporting moderates. One difficulty with this is that it's much easier to tell extremists apart than moderates. Moderates will split the vote, or they will have to control who runs to make sure that they don't. Rather than getting a good choice between two moderates, as we sometimes do in the general, we'll get a desperate choice between a moderate and an extremist, or worse, a terrible choice between two extremists. Citizens will have to think hard about whether to run for office based on whether, when doing so, they will split the vote -- that's taking the worst case for running (spending money, having public humiliation, and then losing) and making it worse (now you do all that, and you end up preventing someone you'd have preferred over the other choices from winning either). Nobody wants to vote strategically -- A lot of folks are painfully undecided on whether to vote for Measure 57, which is bad policy, but is better than Measure 61. A system that encourages it is a bad system.
As for what we should do instead? Well, ranked preference voting would make this system work if it were simple enough, but we shouldn't vote for this until we have ranked preference. Letting anyone choose a partisan ballot at election time gets the benefits of enfranchisement without quite as much strategic voting (though there is some, and it's not an ideal system -- in Michigan's primary this year, Democrats picked up Republican ballots to vote for Romney and cause mischief. This has happened in such states before.)

Someone is exhausted, and that someone is me.
Stayed up plenty late, started recording this week's podcast, and got 20 minutes into it before I realized it sucked...even by my standards. I then abandoned it and went to bed.
So, if you see a podcast turn up in the next two days with today's date on it, just pretend it's on time. I'm just sayin'.

"at a conference in Vienna, Austria, as reported by the BBC, a European Community science working group built a quantum backbone using 200-km of standard commercial optical fiber running among seven sites and successfully demonstrated the first secure quantum cryptographic key distribution network. In addition, each of the seven links used a different kind of quantum encryption, demonstrating interoperability between the technologies. To paraphrase, the project focused on the trusted repeater paradigm and developed an architecture allowing seamless integration of heterogeneous quantum-key distribution-link devices in a unified framework. Network node-modules managing all classical communication tasks provide the underlying quantum devices with authentic classical channels. The node-module architecture uses a layered model to provision network-wide, end-to-end, provably secure key distribution."

Two things that annoy me.
1. The election. I wished it was all over with because I'm sick of hearing about it.
2. Terrorists. Can we please stop calling everyone terrorists? Get pulled over for speeding? You're a terrorist. Jaywalk? Terrorist. It's been about 10 years and it's time to GET OVER IT!
End of line.
