Rent Assistance
Does anyone know of any organizations that provide one-time assistance, such as a past due month of rent?

I'm really at a loss here. I'm trying to work out an arrangement for my rent, I'm at the verge of getting an eviction notice and having the locks changed on me.

I applied to Modest Needs www.modestneeds.org, but as simple as I thought that may have been, it's looking like that won't work for me either. I passed Pre-Screening, but they are continously not happy with the documentation I provide from my property manger, and he doesn't understand why. They want a dated letter on company letterhead that says paying "X" amount of rent will bring my account to a zero balance. The problems are:

-It technically WON'T bring my account to a zero balanace. Actually it just pays my April rent and keeps me from being evicted. I still have to make arrangements to pay other portions of the rent.

-He claims he doesn't have company letterhead, and they won't accept just having his address and phone number. I don't know how to get in touch with the actual owners, we have always just gone through the building manager.

So...this had become much harder than I thought...I'm in this tight jam of needing this amount and I don't know how to go about solving it. I just got a 2nd part-time job...and if I can get help with this one month of rent...I should be ok for now.

So does anyone know of any other organizations? My church doesn't have a large benevolent fund and they helped me out once already. I don't have family to borrow from. My credit sucks too bad to try my hand at a small loan, I already tried with the credit union.

I just need to face the possibility that Modest Needs may not go through for me...unless I can figure out a spectacular solition to my landlord letter problem.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I'm pregnant and eviction is just NOT the cool thing for me right now.

Ok, there's a whole paragraph in here as to why I meant other than Modest Needs.

I hate the idea of getting caught up in these, but have you considered getting a hold-a-check? Like a pay day loan? If you're absolutely desperate it might get you over this one hump.

The trick is then paying it back and not continuing to pay it off and get another one and pay it off and get another one.

Good luck to you.

In my state, the department of human resources (I don't know if it's called that where you are, or something else) sometimes will help out. If you show them all your bills and prove that you are going to be evicted, they will give you emergency money to help out. Usually it's only for one month, but from the sound of it, that's just what you need. I wish I could help about what/which department could help where you are at, but I'm clueless on it. Maybe you can call the social sec. dept and find out if there is a group?

If not, as the person commented above me, the check places are good to get fast cash to get out of a emergency.

I know you are looking for a short term solution, but what's going to happen when you get further along in the third trimester and after the baby is born? Are you single or living with your boyfriend or are married?

Can't Modest Needs just pay off the entire balance? I know you have arrangements already, but MN could cover that as . This can help you focus on the next month's rent. Will MN accept a notarized letter instead of an official letterhead? The landlord can get the letter notarized and it's a good proof you did not forge the letter.

They said they WOULD accept a notarized letter but HE has to get it notarized. He's not willing to go through all of that.

Further down the line I plan on moving in with a roommate that also has a child. Unless I work two jobs(which I don't plan to after I have my baby) I wouldn't be able to continue with my rent. It's too expensive.

MN's limit is $1,000. The amount to bring me to zero is past that, plus they said they are more willing to cover smaller requests. If they help with the past due rent I can cover the other balance and worry about the rest later.

I'm just trying to fix the current situation.

Contact your county's department of social services, explain your situation, and see what they suggest. I'm not sure how widespread this is, but I know some areas do have rent assistance programs, and will help people cover housing costs. I'm not sure what the requirements are, or what the application process is like because I've never gone through it myself. If not rental assistance, perhaps emergency assistance, or TANF... but I don't know.

You could probably find more assistance than I seem to be. Everyone is saying if you already have a kid...it's easier.

The Red Cross flat out told me they can't help me and don't know anyone that can.

Darn, I was going to suggest Modest Needs... You might try St. Vincent de Paul (you can probably find your local chapter by contacting the nearest Catholic church). You don't have to be Catholic.

Yes contact the milwaukee archdiocese. The Catholic church is divided up much like counties in a state... the archdiocese will be like the "county seat" and as such is more than likely the home base for Catholic Charities in your area.

Another option is Heartbeat International they help out pregnant women with a whole slew of things. I checked the worldwide directory and found 12 assistance sites in Milwaukee, however different groups offer different services but if you click on the letters ("R" for example) a pop up will give you the information on what they mean. If you are in need of other items for your pregnancy they might be able to help you with those as well.

I hope this helps. congratulations on your baby, I am guessing a little girl from your icon? And such a pretty name!! (hope I am right about that...) I am sorry you are in this situation. I do agree though that the quick fix payday loan places are just a horrible trap to fall in to. Best wishes!

MORMON church, specifically. Not just any church. I say this because someone on one of the many Yahoo Groups devoted to helping people in urgent need got help from the Mormons, meaning, a couple hundred dollars in cash for the emergency. Cannot remember the exact amount but it was a lot. Could have been for rent or utilities. I wish I could remember more about that to help you, like whom you should call specifically, but I do not and I'm sorry. Other than that I recommend the Ebay Giving Board. Hope you see this message...your post is about to get scrolled off. Good luck to you ma'am.

I second this. The Church of LDS usually helps out a lot in their community- OP, there is probably one not far from you. My fiance lived with LDS members for a few years of his life, and he said they do more than provide money- they'll donate clothes and food as well.
