Thrifty Bagels!
There's a question involved in this post but here's the information that hopefully someone will find as helpful as I did! I was craving bagels but have a tendency to make things myself. After a bit of searching, I stumbled across this awesome recipe. So easy and a surprisingly small amount of household ingredients are needed. So far I've made basil pesto bagels and apple cinnamon bagels. Both absolutely delicious! Whatever you got hanging around, just toss it in! A squishy banana? Maybe an old tomato? Or how about sesame seeds? The possibilities are endless! It's fabulous! Makes about 5 to 6 bagels, depending how big or small you like them. Here we go:

Tasty Thrifty (Vegan!)Bagels:
-1 cup warm water
-3 cups flour (I used whole wheat, but I'm certain white or any other flour would work just as well)
-1 1/2 teaspoon yeast (I've used more with no negative effect)
Mix all ingredients together and leave it alone for about 20 minutes. Then rip off chunks and shape into bagels (don't forget the hole!) Let them rest again on a greased or floured pan for 15 minutes. Then dunk each bagel into boiling water for about a minute or so on each side. Place back on the cookie sheet and put them in a preheated 350 degree oven for 25-30 minutes. Then sit back and stare at them in dumb-struck awe. Or place in mouth (after they've cooled!)

Now here's my question. How can I store them? Putting them in a bag and then into the pantry has me worried about humidity. Sticking them in the fridge has the same concern. What can I do to make them last?

**
Edit to add: These new-fangled techno gadget dealies blow my mind. Please feel free to comment (on the bagels, not my inability to use a computer!)

It's simple. It takes a little bit of time, but that's just spent letting it rest.

Your icon made me giggle.

I would think you could freeze your bagels in a well sealed ziplock bag without any trouble. I freeze bread all the time and as long as it is airtight it works great.

Slice them in half and freeze them. They can be defrosted at room temperature or toasted.

Does slicing them in half make a difference? Or is it purely for conveniance?

you just made a pregnant lady very happy! i used to work in a bagel shop, for bagels people bought to take home we supplied bags that were like the ones loaves of bread come in(to either leave out or place in freezer). i personally store mine in the fridge in ziploc baggies and just heat them up when needed. it seems like when i leave them out they get hard as rocks.

Do you think storing the bagels in the bags that loafes (loaves?) of bread come in would work? I hate just tossing them out.

I worked at a bread store, and we told patrons to put them in a ziplock, sqeeze all the air out, and freeze them. The particular store I worked for did not use any preservatives in the bread- so long as you toasted them afterwards, it was all good and you couldn't tell.

At the school where I work, one of the parents works at a bagelry . . . so we get end of the day bagels all the time . . . they're already room temperature by then, and we just put them in ziplocs with all of the air squeezed out and then in the fridge. They last for several days (they're gone before a week is up so I'm not sure just how long).

i work at brueggers bagels, and we give out freezer bags with out bagels. its best to freeze them in a plastic bag. you can slice them, freeze them, then pop them into your toaster and they'll still be fine. just remember to slice them before freezing!

if you are baking more than you can use in a few days, slice them in half, put them in a ziplock bag and freeze them. pop em in the toaster in the morning for a couple minutes and they are good to go.

I used to buy bulk bagels when the bagle store near my college had their 1/2 priced bakers dozen sales. I usually shared with a friend, but freezing them definitely stretched out their shelf life.

Slice them and freeze them. Then you can pull them out one at a time and thaw them in a toaster or toaster oven. This is how I store waffles, too.

p.s. why did you screen your comments? when you do that, no one else in the community can see the replies, which stops the conversation. I can see the point if you were asking a question that might involve exchanging personal information (like email addresses) but it makes no sense in this particular situation.

Hello, Im not sure if you are aware of this, but your comments are set to screen. Meaning, the rest of the community cannot see the responses. You may want to un screen them to avoid having your post deleted, as screening comments is against the rules.

Also, you could freeze the bagels :)

I would cool them on a rack until completely cool then store in a plastic bag in the fridge. With no preservatives, they are gonna go bad faster than regular bagels.

Put them in a plastic ziploc style bag, squeeze the air out of them and then place in the freezer. Or the cabinet after squeezing all the air out. That's the trick for longer saving I've found.

Since they're homemade (and therefore not doused with preservatives) I'd say you could leave them out for a day, but should seal them up after that. The bagels I used to make (baker for a living at one point) froze really well... you could always try doing that.

You can either microwave them to thaw them (great if you eat them right away, but you wouldn't want to thaw one in the micro and then pack it for lunch) or put them in a toaster or toaster oven. If they're too big for your toaster, you can slice them before freezing.

And don't forget about bagel chips! YUM
