A proposed house song

Hello there friends--I'm sure we're all still dealing with our post-con hangovers, not to mention our disappointing finish in house points, but I have been commanded to share this. My roommates and I, Pontalbons all, composed this song in honor of our house, and also the papier-mache Streeler hat I sported for part of the weekend. That hat has found a better home with Prof. Manifold, but the song will always remain in our hearts.

The Pontalbon song--to the tune of "Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night

Jeremiah was a Streeler
Was a mascot of mine
The colors of his shell looked mighty swell
but beware his toxic slime

Go Pontalbon!
Rock on and on!
Art and architecture at the Universitie
Snails for you and me!

If I were the head of the school
I tell you what I'd say:
That Bellereve, Zydeco and Lumien
need to rock the Streeler way

(refrain)

You know I like the painting
And building is my niche
I'm a real slow slider and a rainbow rider
and an ass-kicking son of a witch!

You can hear it sung by myself, winnett and marginaliana here.

Introducing myself

Hi! I don't think I've gotten around to introducing myself to my fellow house members!

Name: Krissy
Location: Bloomington, IN
Age: 42

Favorite HP Book: Half-Blood Prince
Favorite HP Character(s): Hermione, Draco, Harry, Luna

Have you been to any previous Harry Potter conventions? If so which ones?
This is my first! What sold me was the location...the more exotic, the better.

Do you cosplay? If so, who's your favorite character to dress as?
Nope, sorry. Nor am I dressing in costume for the ball...I'm trying to travel light!

Will you be playing Quidditch at Phoenix Rising? Have you played quidditch in previous years? I'm a cheerleader, not a player!

Which House do you think you'd be in if you went to Hogwarts and why?
Slytherin. Or maybe Ravenclaw.

Do you honestly think you fit into Pontalbòn? Why or why not?
Well, I'm more of a writer than an artist, so it did throw me that I was sorted into Pontalbòn at first, but then I can be crafty when I put my mind to it and writing takes a certain level of artistic creativity as well! So, I'm happy to be here!

See you in New Orleans!

Introduction (finally!)

After a long night of dealing with large amounts of hot glue, paint, and felt, I've finished the first of my projects for the con. I reeeallly shouldn't have put this off! I'm now taking a break to finally introduce myself to the house!

Name: Kim
Location: Little Rock, AR
Age: 25

Favorite HP Book: Order of the Phoenix
Favorite HP Character(s): Neville, George Weasley, McGonagall

Have you been to any previous Harry Potter conventions? If so which ones?
Convirgin! I desperately wanted to go to Lumos, but didn't have the time or money. Now- I do. =)

Do you cosplay? If so, who's your favorite character to dress as?
Well no, and I wasn't even introduced to the term until a month or so ago.
I will be dressing as a female fanfiction version of Blaise Zabini for the ball!

Will you be playing Quidditch at Phoenix Rising? Have you played quidditch in previous years? Nay! I'll be cheering loudly and embarrassingly though!

Which House do you think you'd be in if you went to Hogwarts and why?
Slytherin. I'm more of a friendly, likeable Slughorn sort of elitist.

Do you honestly think you fit into Pontalbòn? Why or why not?
I didn't really think so, though I do apparently have an enthusiasm for creating things. I guess if you call producing tv shows and podcasts "art", then yes. :D

Hooray!!

So I was recently sorted into this house, and I'm JUST now seeing everything that everyone has been getting up to! I'm in the process of creating some wee snail rings (they're turning out to be quite pretty, yet funny at the same time), and I nearly picked out a turquoise dress to wear to the ball- even before I knew I'd be with you guys!

I'm still hoping to finish my Slytherin scarf (though it will be about 90 degrees in NOLA) before I leave on Wednesday! I'm very new to knitting, so I've had to push myself through this. o_0

We're just a FEW DAYS AWAY folks!

Squeeing Locally about PR

Right this minute, I am so full of glee about PR that I might just explode. Less than 10 days, people -- in barely more than a week -- I will be living it up in Nawlins with my fellow Harry Potter fangirls and fanboys and forgetting all about the real world for five days.

And if the prospect of New Orleans, Harry Potter, Storyville, "From Influence to Inspiration," Artists and Authors Night, the Masquerade Ball, and meeting all of y'all didn't excite me enough... I was just contacted by someone from PR about potentially doing an interview about the conference with my local newspaper.

*dances* This is going to be so bloody awesome. I just thought I would share the joy. ^_^

You think maybe there is a possibility of house points coming out of this? >_>

Oklahoma Streeler Breeding Facility Finds Surprise

A large hatching of Ashwinders ("Ashies" when they're babies) mysteriously appeared in the Oklahoma Streeler Breeding Facility recently. The hatchlings were transported by Pontalbòn House member dragonsinger954 via the North American Floo Network to the Austin Ashwinder Association to Lumién House member ofenjen. The rare, entirely gold ashies are now opening their eyes and venturing out of their incubator.

The OK Streeler facility believes more ashies may be hidden in eggs the streelers are currently nesting. If so, those hatchlings will be transported to Austin as soon as possible for proper Ashwinder care.

Curious Ashies meeting in-house Animagus, Marie

Ashie Incubator, many just opening their eyes

x-posted to lumienhouse

Hi everyone,

I'm cross-posting this to all four houses, so I apologise if you see this multiple times! I'm Kirstee, Official L'Université Staff Liaison, among other things. I can't tell you how awesome I think it is that you're all pulling together and really taking pride in your Houses. It's amazing, and if everyone makes just one new friend, then we've done our jobs.

I know that some of you have been contacting your Heads of House regarding Pirate Gold strategies and ideas - which is also awesome! - and that a couple of the esteemed Professors have already introduced themselves to you. I just wanted to let you all know that the Professors are all extremely busy people, what with juggling their Muggle careers and their L'Université commitments, so please don't feel slighted if they are unable to post in the House communities or reply to your comments. I know that once we reach New Orleans and the Pirate Gold competition begins in earnest, all houses will be fiercely competitive with their points.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about L'Université, or the Pirate Gold, or Phoenix Rising in general, you can always contact me at kirstee@thephoenixrises.org. I admit I'm a poor substitute for a Head of House, but feel free to bounce ideas off me. (I am completely neutral in this game!)

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Kirstee
kirstee@thephoenixrises.org

Responding to Shae - Pontalbon Forum

In response to Shae's question..

Yes! In the spirit of IntraHouse Unity . . 5 to 10 points will be awarded to the House of any student who brings a handmade artwork -or artworks- of the Pontalbon mascot. The points are per student (not per artwork).

This raises the stakes for the Pontalbon House members. Although it will be wonderful to see the charming streeler being well represented . . . let's not let another house win more points than Pontalbon for creating images of the Pontalbon mascot!!!

Cafepress shop

Hey guys!

Awhile back, at the suggestion of some of the other house members, I started up a cafepress shop for Pontalbòn. Unfortunately, I've not really had the drive to really get it to be what it could be, and Bellereve is sooo kicking our...behinds in the shop thing here.

So. Is there any creative, driven Pontalbons out there who would be willing to take on the shop? I'd be happy to transfer it to someone. Or if you don't want to handle it on your own, I'd be willing to help out. Maybe having someone else pushing along will get me going. Who knows?

So yeah, please let me know. Either email me at charming.goats at gmail.com, or drop a line here.

Thanks!
Heather
Pontalbòn FTW!

EDIT In the meantime, if anyone has T-shirts they'd like to submit, send it my way. I'll be happy to add them onto the site. PNG format through email is preferred. Apparently PNG format makes the shirts come out cleaner.

LINK TO THE SHOP

Well Pontalbonians, you're off to a good start earning points the house. Four house members have accepted the challenge to create a small section of the picture we will be reconstructing in New Orleans. Eight more volunteers are needed. The sections are very easy to reconstruct, so architects as well as artists would find the pieces easy to reproduce in paint, collage, or any other 2-d media.

In looking back over the posts, I was quite pleased to read that several of you are producing emblems of our beloved little mascot. I'll be awarding 5 to 10 points to anyone who makes and brings a work of art representing a streeler. The number of points given will depend on the ambitiousness of the work. The mascot image could be worked into a small pin that can be worn [automatic 10 points if extras are made for sharing!], an afghan with the image worked into the design, a sculpture or a handpainted tee shirt bearing the streeler. Architects...come up with an original blueprint for an a snail shaped abode!

The points must be limited to handmade streeler images or forms (although kits are allowed).

However, I notice that some of your wonderful artwork--thanks to the streeler stains--have influenced the imaginations of Muggles. The Folkmanis puppet folks have made a couple of cute little streelers for muggle children to enjoy - (although there is a rumor that the Folkmanis artists are wizards in disguise -check out their Phoenix, Owls & Dragons). One of their creations - the "jeweled snail handpuppet"- is a very close replica of our magical streeler. A few of the 'jeweled snails' are still lurking around on the web or in toystores, but they are not easy to find. As might be expected, while Muggles sleep, these clever little fellows are slithering into hiding- or finding portkeys back to the wizard world. Catch one if you can and rescue it from an unmagical fate - wouldn't want Muggle artists to try experimenting with turning our beloved streelers into stains!

Oh - By the way, Pontalbonians, don't let the those rumors of excessive house points worry you all. You are all such creative wizardry students, no doubt you will be well rewarded!

Keep watching the posts for hints of how these might be achieved!

Professor Manifold

Welcome Pontalbonians!

Hello one and all,

First, let me introduce myself to those of you who have been fortunate to have been sorted into our noble house, I am Professor Manifold, Head of Pontalbòn House.

Welcome! and may I say how pleased I am to see many newly sorted members of Pontalbon getting to know one another on the Phoenix Rising Forum and here at LJ. Thanks to all of you who are upper classmen who are making our first years welcome. While I have been on a bit of a sabbatical, gathering turquoise stones, apache tears, and cactus juices from the Painted Desert to be ground into paint for this term's projects, many of you have been conjuring up some very interesting artistic projects on your own.

Of course, I was a bit concerned early on that several of the newly sorted Pontalbonians-especially on the Forum site- seemed reticent to participate in forum conversations, and a few wondered why 'with so little artistic ability' they had been sorted to this house.

Well folks, remember the Sorting Hat 'sees' your true self. We artistic wizards are visual thinkers, we imagine and dream in images more than in words. Sometimes we see more than we say. And those images aren't just paintings or drawings...they come in manifold forms. So trust the Hat, folks, you are all properly sorted! And I trust Happily so!

Now back to your artistic ideas...I was especially attracted by two of Amber's suggestions on the forum. The personal cards would be a wonderful way of announcing who we are to one another and to those young wizards of other houses. All the doodle art, costume, needle ar, clay pins, and beading projects are truly artful. It will be such delight to see your many, many wonderful creations.

But I would like to draw attention again to Amber's idea #1 and adopt it in presenting a little challenge for you - (perhaps you can earn a few points for the house).

I have taken a small photo of a very special young wizard and chopped the picture into 12 jpg parts. We need 12 house members to volunteer to each take one segment of the jpg photo and reproduce it to the size 5 x 6 1/2 in ANY 2-dimensional media (collage, watercolor, paint, beads pressed into wax on cardboard, needlepoint, etc).

If you are interested, contact me and I will send one of the segments as an email attachment (link from the Forum). The photo is an easy one to reproduce, so don't hesitate on that account! As a reward 10 points go to each house members who finishes a section and brings it to Phoenix Rising.

Meanwhile, keep the imaginative ideas flowing!
There are points to be had for bright thoughts that translate into images!

Professor Manifold

PR/Pontalbòn illusion knit scarf attempt...

I was thinking of doing an illusion (or shadow) knit scarf. One side would say Phoenix Rising and the other side would say Pontalbòn. I put attempt because I'm not sure it'll be finished by May, and this is the first time I'm creating a graph myself. I'm crossing my fingers. This is how Wikipedia explains illusion (or shadow) knitting for anyone who wants to know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_knitting. I first learned about it watching Knitty Gritty on the DIY channel. I'm alternating between turquoise and off-white. I hope it comes out okay. I have pics of another one I'm working on now, but I don't know how to use LJ, lol. I'll post them another day.

Spent the weekend crafting and as a result there is the Pontalbon version of "300" below!

In the meantime, started a shawl in fun yarn I found at Dollar Tree for the conference. and here's progress so far:

That's the first ball of yarn so far and the one to the side above is a full ball to give you some idea how far I seem to be getting out of one ball of it.

Had not been into Dollar Tree in a while so found a lot of new things... including these goodies for my House uniform.

The beret was found at Walmart marked down to $3 too :D

The packet holds 5 of those bracelets that you snap and light up in the color shown. Not sure what I'll do with the glass stones but maybe decorate a photo frame for a shot of some of my friends. And the ribbon rosettes, not sure what I'll do with them but will find something :D
