| I'm doing my senior project, and I would like to know;;
Which Eponine would you consider to be the best? And which song would you think best summarizes up her character, if there is to be one?
Thank you... | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| Here are the excerpts relating to Les Mis and Eponine:
Heaven Knows I’m in Les Miserables Now: To play Eponine is an ambition of many an aspiring musical theatre actress, and Compton was no exception. After a tough audition process and initial rejection, she’s now delighted to be discovering the character. “It looks on the surface that she’s a girl that loves a guy and that’s it,” she says. “But it’s not. She’s got a very complex, very tough background, and I think I’ve really grown in this last year, coming back to audition for the role and getting it this time round. I love playing her, because it isn’t just ‘Oh, I love him.' It’s so much more than that. Her journey, up until her death, is so selfless. She never once feels sorry for herself. The trick is, it’s so difficult to want the audience to feel sorry for you, but not feel sorry for yourself. The fantastic thing is that I don’t feel miserable when I play her. She’s got so much energy, and she doesn’t feel sorry for herself—she’s tough.” And then there are the beautiful songs. “‘On My Own’ is a wonderful song,” she exclaims. “I love singing it, and I get nervous every single time the intro starts. To go out and sing a song that’s been going for 22 years, but make it your own as well, is quite scary.” In The Hands of Fate: Compton is excited about her future and philosophical about the circumstances that led her to Les Mis. “It was a very strange beginning to the year. I had the most horrendous audition for Les Mis. I thought, no, I’ve blown it. Then I got the call saying, you have to come and see Cameron Mackintosh tomorrow. I suddenly went, 'Oh, great!' It was something that I was meant to do. I really believe that things happen for a reason, and it was obviously meant to come full circle and come into my life at some point.”

| Just saw the show on the 18.
Drew Sarich (Valjean)- I saw him first as enjolras and didn't care for him much there. As Jean Valjean, he was decent. No DOUBT his voice is brilliant but he sounded and looked to young for the part. The man can hit some high notes (his 2-4-6-0-111 was AMAZING) but the youth took away from his performance. Although he was SOOO nice to me at the stage door. Robert Hunt (Javert)- I can't think of words to describe him. he was just incredable. His acting was so passionate and on target. His voice gave me chills. After 'Stars' I was covered in chills. Norm Lewis was my favorite Javert (he is AMAZING!!!!) but Robert Hunt was a CLOSE second.
Lea Salonga (Fantine)- Do I really need to explain. She was so amazing and so passionate. AH! I can't believe i've seen Lea twice. She was really sweet at the stage door. There truly are no words to describe this woman.
Adam Jacobs (Marius)- The first time I saw him (when the revival first opened), I didn't care for him much. He was a great singer but overacted. The past two time he has improved MILES. he (along with tim howar) is my favorite Marius. Great voice and beautiful acting. Also VERY nice at the stage door. Realllly cute too.
Ali Ewoldt (Cosette)- I just adore her. She is so gorgeous and just has a beautiful, songbird voice. Amazing acting during the finale. If her and Adam had a baby it would be the most beautiful baby in the world.
Max Von Essen (Enjolras)- started out sharp when he first came out but really got alot better. he is a great Enjolras. I never had the privalege to see Aaron Lazar but Max was still fantastic as Enjolras. Good, sturdy performance.
Chip Zien (Theinardier)- Hilarious!!!! I prefer him to Gary Beach (sorry Gary, I still love ya). Chip was so sweet at the stage door. A guy holding a phone that was pretty old and outdated (not extremly) Chip thought it was one of those Iphones and was embarrassed when he was corrected. I just love him!
Ann Harada (Mme. Theinardier)- SO funny. Chip and her made a great team. Much better than the first time I saw her, She constantly madae me laugh. I hardly recoginze her when she came out at the stage door. She's alot different without that big red wig!
Megan McGinnis (Eponine)- BEAUTIFUL VOICE! It really is gorgeous. I really enjoyed her performance although the whole time I wanted to go up on stage and rough her up a bit. She seemed to sweet and too shy. Although I like a varity of Eponines. Great overall.
I was lucky enough to get my pic taken with Drew, LEA, Adam, Ali, Megan and Ann. And auotgraphs from those people and Chip (I went to the stage door twice, the first i forgot my camera then when I went back I just got pics). Great trip overall. I also saw Phantom, A Chorus Line, Curtains, Spelling Bee, Mamma Mia, Chicago and Legally Blonde. I would suggest all of them- they ALL were AMAZING!

| | Okay... I just got two Les Miz revival DVD bootlegs in the mail... One with the original cast, save Drew Sarich as Enjolras... The other with the newer cast (Lea Salonga, Mandy Bruno, etc)... Drew plays Javert in that DVD. They are both great quality DVDs (the original cast is practically pro shot)... They are filmed in wide screen. The Lea DVD has a lot of heads and "oh shit, here comes an usher" moments, but still has amazing closeups. Lea really is a stunning Fantine... Mandy, well, I think it is safe to say that she grew into the role. She was pretty good when I saw here live, but she really was pretty terrible in this DVD. Celia is THE Eponine. | comments: 19 comments or Leave a comment |
| So here's the scoop I got from my "agent". Mandy had something wrong with her vocal cords so she took time off as Megan filled in. Theu eventually decided Mandy's time off would be too long and blah blah so Megan OFFICIALLY HAS TAKED OVER THE ROLE OF EPONINE. | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |
| Megan McGinis is officially the new Eponine (im pretty sure- almost 100%) Mandy was let go. Her last show was Sunday. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Saw Les Mis last night for the first time since its move from the Palace theatre. We sat in the middle of Row R of the stalls after buying 'best available' tickets off Lastminute.com for £29.50 + £1 booking fee. Legroom was ample, view not the best - the dress circle overhang obscured some of the 'higher up' action, and we felt a bit distant from the stage. That said, good value for what we paid, would have been miffed if the tickets had been full price. I have to confess at being slightly nonplussed at the actual performance; I have very fond memories of the numerous times I saw it at the Palace theatre. John Owen Jones was a solid Valjean, although wavered occasionally with some of the difficult notes. Javert was played by an understudy whose name I did not catch (he was very tall) - and again a decent performance, but nothing spectacular. Joanna Ampil & Gina Beck put in good performances as Fantine and Cosette - and I thought Sabrina Aloueche put in the best performance as Eponine that I have seen since Lea Salonga played the role - fabulous voice. She was very convincing as a street girl and looked like she could quite easily take on the entire ABC cafe! She played the heartroken child so well, and her On My Own got one of the biggest and longest applauses of the night. Simon Bailey as Enjolras was also one of the better players of the role I have seen - he had a strong voice and did justice to 'Do You Hear The People Sing'. John Lee is simply not right for the part of Marius - he sung his parts far too abruptly, and did not bring out the emotion expected from 'Empty Chairs'. The Thenardiers did not draw out the comic aspects as much I have seen in the past either (this may be because Mr Thenardier was understudied for that performance) Also the ensemble seem to have gone really downhill since the Palace theatre production - weak singing voices, lack of slickness as a group, and terrible use of the microphone for the leader of the French army - they really need to pull their socks up! In all it still remains a very enjoyable evening out, and no doubt will continue for many years to come (the auditorium was full, even on a Wednesday evening) | comments: Leave a comment |
| They are getting rid of Mandy Bruno. Auditions for Eponine were held May 30-31st and they will be re-casting. | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |
| I recently became aware that a video of Bruno and the new cast is available. Anyone here have it and care to post a short teaser clip on YouTube? | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| HAPPY EPONINE DAY EVERONE!
When I first got into Les Mis, I dubbed June Fourth Eponine day and this is the third year! Every year, I do something that I can post online.
This year, I did something sort of different. I did cartoon versions of pretty much every scene that Eponine is in. I'm not very good at drawing, so some of these are kind of bad, but ... yeah! They took a long time and I'm pretty happy with how some of them turned out. Just so you know, I didn't draw many backgrounds because they would take too long and I absolutely fail at them. Also, I didn't mean to make Cosette look so evil in the second picture of her - I don't really know how that happened.
Livejournal won't let me post all of the pictures, so I'll just link to the musicals.net thread that I made.

| Ok, last weekend I was in NYC and went to the Saturday matinée of Les Miserables. I sat in the front of the Mezzanine, which were surprisingly good seats. Immediately I opened my Playbill to discover that Lea salonga was not going to be performing. Needless to say, I was PISSED. Anyways, I calmed down when the show started. The show was Amazing, despite the fact that Lea was not performing. The orchestrations were a bit lackluster compared to what I am used to on recordings, but oh well...
Alex G: He was good, but not great. He had a very nice voice and obviously very talented but I just wasn't into his interpretation. I hated it when he laughed in "Who am I" when he sings "They think that man is me". It was small moments like that that took me out of Alex's performance.
Ben Davis: I was never really a Javert fan, but Davis captured my attention and I actually did feel pity for him during the bridge scene. His voice was very stern, but filled with emotion... All in all a pretty good performance
Nikki Renee Daniels: Despite the fact she was replacing Lea, I was very satisfied by Nikki's performance. She had an amazing voice and was a decent actress. I probably would have enjoyed her a lot more if I hadn't had my heart set on seeing Lea.
Ali Ewoldt: Ali was a great Cosette. She made Cosette much more interesting and cute. She had a sweet, innocent sounding voice and had great chemistry with Adam
Adam Jacobs: Adam gets a lot of crap for his Marius, but I enjoyed him... I think Marius has to be a difficult part to play because it is so easy to slip into that same, boring romantic lead stereotype. Like Ali, Adam made the part interesting and had great (platonic) chemistry with Mandy Bruno. He was always kind to Eponine without flirting or suggesting that there was ever a chance that he could be in love with Eponine. He was also really nice at the stage door. I got his autograph which was pretty neat.
Anne Harada: Not the greatest Mme Thenardier. She was decent but a little too, well, Asian for the part. It's the same problem I had with Kaho Shimadila (sp?) I think it is really distracting if one of the main characters has a really noticeable foreign accent. She was really sweet at the stage door, and even took a picture with me.
Gary Beach: Ya know... I didn't care for Gary all that much. I can't explain why either... I was really excited to see his performance, but I was really disappointed.
Max Von Essen: Another disappointment... He was boring. His Enjolras was not nearly interesting or thrilling enough to believably rouse students to revolt. His voice was nice, but not particularly strong and his acting was kinda insipid.
Mandy Bruno: After all of the waiting and fear of a terrible performance, she really wasn't bad. She played Eponine as a bit crazy at times, and love sick teenager at other times. She reminded me of an abused animal, especially the way she moved and her posture (her head was always down and her shoulders were up and tense). Her voice seems to have grown since she started her run as Eponine, but she is no belter. Not a bad Eponine, but not the best. I saw her at the stage door, but did not meet her, because she seemed to be in a hurry.
After the show, we waited around to meet some of the actors, but unfortunately, since it was a matinée many people did not come out. I got Drew Sarich, Megan McGinnis, Anne Harada, Adam Jacob, Little Cosette, and Gavroche's autographs and I got a picture with Anne Harada.
On this trip I was fortunate enough to see Phantom of the Opera, Rent (with former Les Miz actors Tim Howar and Tonya Dixon), The Drowsy Chaperone, and Hairspray... I got to meet some of the actors from Hairspray and got my picture taken with Alexa Veda (the sister in Spy Kids who played Penny Pingleton) and the girl who played Tracy. It was an amazing trip!!!!! | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |
| Just saw Mandy Bruno as Eponine last week. Celia can run circles around Mandy. Sure Mandy wasn't AWFUL but she couldn't belt. She didn't put as much passion into. She wasn't as cutesy as Diana (yick) but still...Celia is one of my favourites and compared to her, Mandy is nothing. But still she did reasonable. I give her a...seven out of ten. She did sound nasal at times. I actually liked her acting more than her singing. She has much room to improve but I'd say worth seeing again (although Id rather see Megan or Marrissa OR CELIA!). | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
