Neglected Fandom Recs: William Beckett

  • Jul. 14th, 2008 at 9:38 AM
Hey guys,
So I'm doing a post on bandslash recs which center around William Beckett, the singer for the band The Academy Is... In case you don't know them, there's a good primer/picspam on both him and them over here.
Anyway, in a lot of bandslash fic, it seems like William gets shoved into the role of a trope character - the drunk guy, the creep, the crazy guy, etc. I think this is probably because he's a difficult guy to characterize.
So, here are some fics that I think actually develop a personality for William Beckett:

ETA: Link problem fixed! Sorry guys; when I copied the html from Microsoft Word, where I originally did it, it ended up with some extra spaces and stuff in it. Problem (hopefully) fixed.
So Torchwood is a large, prolific fandom at this point and a good portion of it belongs to Jack/Ianto. This is a canon pairing that gives writers something to jump off of without having to worry about bringing them together. Except of course there are a million ways to bring them together and the show never tells us how that happens.

However I'm not reccing stories that show how they got together. I'm reccing stories that show another side of them or show outside of them. They're not necessarily together in all of them and one of them could even be considered gen.

There are only 6 recs in this set, but all of them are incredibly well-written and focus not only on their relationship, but on Torchwood itself. Oh, and occasionally The Doctor. Because I love The Doctor when he interacts with Torchwood.

Neglected Fandom Recs: Moonlight

  • Jul. 5th, 2008 at 8:57 AM
I’m so so late with this list. I apologize.

Short summary of a short-lived, but much-loved vampire serial, Moonlight: Angsty, unwilling vampire Mick. Whip-smart, headstrong, intelligent, beautiful human Beth (whom Mick happened to save from crazy ex-wife, Coraline, when she was four). L.A. vamp guardian/Mick’s best friend Josef. Cool supporting characters (the Cleaner, Guillermo at the morgue, vamp geek Logan). Action, UST, male friendship. Best new show on TV…until the writer’s strike/hiatus killed it *sighs*

A much more detailed description can be found here .

For a show that only had sixteen episodes, the fandom (and resulting fanfiction) is passionate and surprisingly prolific. Below are some of my favorite stories.

Neglected Fandom Recs: Batman gen fics

  • Jul. 3rd, 2008 at 11:53 PM
A bit late, but happy to rec.

Batman is, for a canon that has been around for so many years, a fandom where good gen fic is hard to find. Stories that explore romantic relationships are interesting, but the world that is Gotham city and its inhabitants is fascinating. Most of these stories won’t have a big mystery or action in them, but what they do have is a fantastic grasp of the characters, from caped crusaders to police officers to anonymous Gothamites.

Neglected Fandom Recs - July Challenge

  • Jun. 29th, 2008 at 6:38 PM
Hello, everyone! I hope that your summers are going well. Continuing in our monthly summer reccing challenges, the final one of the year will be July's challenge to create a guest reccing post of a fandom/pairing that we've neglected on [info]polyfandomrecs. The first purpose of this community is for [info]storydivagirl and I to share our love for the copious amounts of fic we consume on a daily basis. The secondary purpose is to recognize exceptional fic writers, including those that might not get recced often.

As you can tell, we both lean heavily towards our pet fandoms and our favorite pairings, and that leaves out tons of great writers. Therefore, we've decided to give you all a chance to compile and post a list of recs in any fandom we've neglected. That way we can see some variety on here and maybe expand our horizons a bit. (There's also the selfish reason of wanting to find some new fandoms and good stories)

Bandslash: Miscellaneous

  • Jun. 20th, 2008 at 8:38 PM
So some of you may have noticed that I haven't updated in a while. The reason for that is my computer went kablooey and took with it all of the recs I had saved up. Obviously I need to find a newer, safer way to save my recs. I lost a decent amount of sga and miscellaneous fic recs, along with at least twenty five Panic recs. *grumble grumble* Anyway, though, I got myself that Firefox Delicious add-on, so that everything I save to rec gets posted automatically to Delicious. If you're interested in keeping up with my future recs in between posts, you can do that at iamtheenemy.

Since it has been so long since my last post, I decided to make a miscellaneous bandom post. I don't have enough for separate posts, but here's what I've found so far, including my [info]bandombigbang recs. I'm also going to start including story length in the recs, per someone's suggestion in the last poll, let me know if that's something you like. Enjoy the stories.

Argh. This is what happens when I go signup-happy during finals week and pick a deadline that's the week after graduation. I completely forget that I have recs to be posting!

Mea maxima culpa! Hope the recs will help:

Hey! You got your sci-fi opus in my bantery medical drama again! )
This is a very small fandom, but there are some really great fics in it. These are what I’ve found to stand out as some of the top fics in this fandom. Using the term coined recently these two are the ultimate ‘bromance.’ If you’ve ever seen the show you could see the possibility of these two sneaking away if ever given the opportunity. Picking 10 fics was hard, because there are a lot of good ones, and some of these authors have multiple great works.
This is a mix of different genres within the Vince/Eric Fandom that I’m hoping you enjoy. There are many more fics in this fandom to enjoy, and you might find some that you enjoy even more than these. This is still a small fandom, but it’s got fans, and it is even going to have a Ficathon that will be finishing up in the next month and posting new fics. So explore and enjoy these fics.

Hi this is [info]wishfulclicking     again!

So this time around I am reccing in my current playground: bandom.  This list celebrates stories that fall into the following categories: crack and trope.  I'm sure everyone has encountered summaries or story ideas that made them pause and wonder if it would really work or made them think 'but everyone has done that, what could possibly be fresh about this?'. Well these stories are all just wonderful to me. The defining feature of all of these stories is that they handled their premise excellently.

I've had a really good time this month. This is my first time participating in this----everyone has been fantastic with their recs! I hope you guys have discovered some cool fic with this list--or at least remembered how great these were.

(I had serious HTML issues so I am sorry if the entry kept on popping up and then being deleted :(

Or the original title if you're interested (and of course you are): What Were They On (And Where Can We Get Some?): Top Ten Mckay/Sheppard Crack Fics

Blessed with some of the most creative fans I’ve ever befriended, it’s no wonder the SGA fandom simply excels at crack. Writing an in-character fic can be a challenge, even more so when you turn the main characters into inanimate objects, animals or mythical fairytale creatures (among other things), but the authors for the following fics not only accomplished the task, they perfected it to an art form.

No, seriously.

See, the thing is: I love crack fics. You could even say I'm addicted to them (har har not so much). I love its lightheartedness and tongue-in-cheek humor, and most of all, its ability to make me laugh even after an excruciatingly long day. Add some Mckay/Sheppard to it and I'm done for. Hopefully you guys will like it, too. ♥

Enjoy :D )
I was a huge fan of Veronica Mars during seasons 1 & 2, but was never sure how I felt about Logan Echolls. He was a jerk…he’s loyal…he’s racist(?)…his inspirational quotes of the day made me laugh…I can’t see a yellow XTerra without thinking of him. And I realize that, while he considered them “epic,” I don’t think he’s any good with Veronica. So I’ve gone looking for non Logan/Veronica het fanfics. Below of the cut are my top ten.

Guest reccer: Top Ten Bandslash AUs

  • May. 25th, 2008 at 3:05 PM
As I said in my earlier post, I used to be quite sceptical about AUs but popslash taught me to love them so I was VERY happy to discover that bandslash also has a large amount of well-written and well-crafted AUs. So large in fact that it was almost impossible to just pick ten stories to rec! In the end I'd to be very stern with myself and even so this is not so much my Top Ten as A Selection of Ten Really, Really Fabulous AUs That I Like Right Now... )

Guest Reccer: Top Ten Drake/Josh Slash Fics

  • May. 24th, 2008 at 12:28 PM

Okay, so the official name of this recommendations list is: "Top Ten Drake & Josh 'Oh My God, I'm In Love with My Stepbrother!' Fics", but I shortened it to be more concise.  :o)

Good fic is hard to find sometimes, especially in the Drake & Josh fandom, but after searching high and low, I think I have found the best of the best in terms of D/J slash.  (Keep in mind, this is based wholly on my opinion.)

Here they are, in no particular order:

Guest Reccer: Top Ten Sam/Jess Fics

  • May. 23rd, 2008 at 8:21 PM
I have seen a grand total of one episode of Supernatural (3x01), but it’s difficult to be on LiveJournal and not come across the (very prolific and passionate) fandom. Perhaps it’s because I watch Friday Night Lights and found out the actress who plays Tyra was Jessica Moore, but somehow I started reading the Sam/Jess fics I could find…and completely fell in love with the characters. Below are my ten favorite Sam/Jess fic, in no particular order.

Because I’m the only person who looks at Sam Winchester and thinks “Het” )

I had planned to do a top ten of SGA fics that cause uncontrollable laughter no matter how many times I've reread them, but discovered that it was too broad of a category.  I've decided to narrow it down to fics that also have documents such as letters, emails, pamphlets, webpages, mission reports, etc.  Though actually this is more of a ten of quite a few document fics that bring the humor.  The recs will be a bit on the short side because its hard for me to put into words why I like a particular fic.

Guest reccer: Top Ten Popslash AUs

  • May. 21st, 2008 at 1:54 PM
I used to be very sceptical about AUs but popslash changed that completely. The amount of well-crafted and well-written AUs in that fandom is quite astounding and I'd a hard time picking just ten of them, so this is more A Selection of Ten Really Good AUs That I Really Like... )

Supernatural - 8 Recs

  • May. 20th, 2008 at 1:01 PM
Because Steph has pointed out that I've been a little bit...missing...lately and I apologize. There's not a lot here, but these are a few of the Supernatural stories I've had bookmarked. I've been reading fic again over the past couple of weeks, so hopefully there will be some smaller fandoms to follow.

Supernatural (8 Recs)

1. Earthquake Weather by [info]javajunkie13 - Post Heart, Sam/Dean [R] – I won java’s brilliant writing abilities in Sweet Charity and this great story is what came out of it. It features a wondeful Jersey Devil as the monster of the week and focuses on Sam/Dean in the aftermath of both Heart and What Is and Should Never Be. I really love both Sam and Dean in this, but the way Sam feels about Dean in this is so perfect. He sounds tired and defeated, a combination Sam’s never known how to handle, because Dean has always been the one who holds the world together.

2. PS I Love You by [info]pheebs1 - Post Dream a Little Dream of Me, Sam/Dean [R] – A supernatural version of the movie with the same title. It’s achey and wonderful and just the amounts that both Sam and Dean love each other break my heart. And the end just…so good. Sam pulls his book closer, trying not to listen, but the noise reverberates through the tiny room. It’s the smallest room they’d been in for a while. Dean had bitched jokingly about wanting a better send off, but they’d both liked the closeness, loving that they were only an arm’s reach away from one other.

3. Mournful He Would Be on Wednesday by [info]misskittye - Post Mystery Spot, Sam/Dean [PG-13] – Another wonderful piece set in the aftermath of the episode. Sam is trying to get past his grief and Dean is so wonderfully patient and concerned without being OOC. Plus, there is wonderful kissing. "I don't ever want to come here again," Sam says. Miles and miles of America hold bad memories for Sam, he considers entire states bad luck, but this place - he'd burn Broward to the ground if he could stand to spend another minute here. "I don't ever want to come within two hundred miles of this place."

4. I Don’t Like Tuesdays (Tell Me Why) by [info]fleshflutter - Post Mystery Spot [PG] – This is a lovely gen piece. I love Sam trying his best to hold onto Dean and a Dean who tries to be patient, but is freaked out and annoyed. So very good. After Dean’s asleep, Sam rolls over on his side in his own bed and watches him. Watches the steady rise and fall of his chest. Then he gets up and checks that the doors are still locked, that his gun is still loaded and ready to fire at the first sign of danger. Everything is quiet. Safe.

5. A Day Like Today by [info]luzdeestrellas - Post Mystery Spot, Sam/Dean [PG] - This is a sweet short piece set in the aftermath of Dean's deal and Sam being able to save him. I loved how solid Dean is in this for Sam and how Sam is just able to hold onto him. Lovely. It's three days before it sinks in. Sam spends a day and a half in a hospital watching Dean sleep, a day and a half after that in a motel room doing more of the same, riding high on a lot of coffee and enough relief to power the world.

6. Pierce It by [info]jenadamson - Post Jus In Bello, Sam/Dean [NC-17] – Sam and Dean give each other tattoos and that leads to hot, hot stuff. Even with the amulets Bobby gave them, he's too freaked to do much beyond watch Sam all the time, which he's used to; in one form or another he's always watched out for Sammy.

7. Phthonus in Lethe by [info]leonidaslion - Post Jus In Bello, Sam/Dean [NC-17] – Dude, this fic is just…it has a possessive!Sam and Dean being pushed up against a wall (two of my favorite things ever). Mostly, it’s really hot and Dean can’t seem to be coherent long enough to freak out. “That’s the point,” Sam whispers. The timber of his voice, almost a growl, does funny things to Dean’s insides. “Want them to see. Want everyone to know who you belong to.”

8. Amidst The War of Elements by [info]destina - Post No Rest for the Wicked, Sam/Dean [PG] - A great coda to where the finale leaves off. It's sad and dark, but it has the boys where they belong - together. Hello, captain obvious, Dean thinks, but it's too many words, so he only nods. Sam reaches out a hand, touches Dean's where it rests on the blue and white quilt. "It's...you've been...it's been so long," Sam says, and in the spaces between the words, Dean hears fear. He knows that kind of fear; he's known it a hundred times, can see Sam's closed eyes, Sam's limp body in his arms, and a pang of sympathy chokes him.
Top Ten Parental Issues & Greek Complex Fics

I like stories about families.

The X-Men comics provided my first fandom home, and the X-Men have always been, for me, the ultimate superhero family. Not the Fantastic Four. Not the Bat folk. The X-Men.

Why? Perhaps because I associated the idea of ‘family’ with a large, sprawling collective of individuals whose common denominator did not always extend beyond a mere genetic quirk. Perhaps because I view decades-long feuds as integral to the familial experience. Or, perhaps I simply like my fictional families to be über dysfunctional with a soupcon of fucked up-ness for good measure.

As time has passed, I have realised that it is often the mater/pater angst that most frequently grabs my attention. Mommas and Papas can prompt the best and the worst in us, and a whole range of weird and wacky behaviour in between. That whole spectrum attracts me. So, for my top ten, I’m going to rec a selection of stories that showcase different stages along that spectrum; from the (relatively) uncomplicated love between Hermione Granger and her mother, to the complications and machinations of Gaius Baltar’s offspring, both real and imagined. The families of these fics aren’t always related by blood, or even of the corporeal realm, but the characters fulfil family roles by proxy, necessity or bizarre ritual position.

I hope you enjoy!
