How's My Driving?
[PROCEED]

IT'S HERE, IT'S HERE! HMD, HMD! HOW'S MY DRIVING? PRETTY GOOD, RIGHT? AREN'T YOU THANKFUL?! GOBBLE IT UP, POLYCHROMATIDS~!!

Welcome back to our more seasoned members, and welcome to you first-timers.

HMD is the gamewide chance for feedback on playing here in [info]polychromatic.

And here's our philosophy on HMD: praise--it's all well and good (we all love it, yeah?), so if you want to give praise, love, ♥s, whatever, go for it! It's especially great to say what you ♥ so much about a character. For example, how they acted during X curse or Y plot was great, or how they adjusted (or didn't?) to the City was fascinating. But we all know, constructive crit is best when you're looking for advice on how to improve. What we really encourage here are questions. It gives you the chance to maybe understand something, (and maybe you think it makes sense after all now), and the player a chance to explain. For example:

"How did Gary get from Point A in canon to Point B in Poly? It didn't quite make sense to me."

"What started this whole fascination of Sue's with the bananas?"

And then you find out that there's a long, involved story that goes back six months involving the aftermath of a curse, a lizard, a pound of potatoes, a watermelon, three French maids, and a pogo stick. And then it all makes perfect sense.

Or perhaps it doesn't, but you've started a dialogue about the things you perceive versus the things the player perceives.

As decided by community vote, anon is not allowed here on the main HMD post, and IP logging is on. Sorry, Anon. However, we encourage posting a link to your own, personal, anon-enabled crit thread(s) if allowing anon is something you want to do and are comfortable with. But keep in mind that we moderators can't police those crit threads: not only are they anon, but they are on your own journals, and there are dozens of them. But we entreat members of this game to be polite and courteous, logged in or not. We will be watching the main post for any unrest, however, so keep that in mind. (We like to watch.) Let's all keep ourselves like civilized people, and have a decent time. Remember, no road rage in HMD.

To keep things organized, please post your comment in the following format*:

The general disclaimer, as usual, applies:

By choosing to post here on HMD, you may receive comments you don't necessarily enjoy. By posting here, you accept that this could happen, and you're basically okay with it. We will be monitoring this post for abuse and will shut down any instances of abuse we see. However, constructive crit, comments, or questions you just don't like do not count as abuse.

Whew. Now that that's all out of the way, have at it, [info]polychromatic!

*Please remember our requests regarding sparkles, images, embedded media, and other bits of coding. A little variation on the comment form is fine and tasty, and putting things like gifs or videos behind links or in collapsed threads is fine too, but please consider the loading time for others with slower connections. And take it easy on the placeholders: HMD isn't going anywhere.

And because it's apparently traditional for HMD posts to go up in the middle of the damn night, here we are. =_=v

20-24; The Architect – Act I (Boxes)
Plain boxes containing a single red button have appeared at the doorsteps of many citizens. Each box contains a set of very important instructions pitting curses against souvenirs from home or maybe even a chance to go home all together. What will your citizen do when faced with such an opportunity? [Stay tuned for a mod post concerning this event! It will require some moderately intense player-to-player involvement in that characters will be given a chance to inflict curses upon each other. The results of this event will tie into another event in December, however players do not have to participate in both events. They may have their character involved in one or the other, both, or none.]

Instructions
Salutations, Citizen. Presented to you is the chance of your lifetime in which you may receive 1,000 Indigos, a precious souvenir from home, or the chance to return to that home. All you need do is press the button and a single individual whom you may or may not know will be cursed. No harm will come to you if you do. No harm will come to you if you do not. Make haste because this offer expires in five days where in this box will become obsolete. We know what rests deep in your heart, Citizen. Choose wisely.

Ladies and Gentlemen~!!

Welcome to November! (But it's half over already...) We come bearing announcements:

The application thread is...rather full.

Thirty-one pages? Wow. That's a lot of apps!

So! What does this mean?

This means that we will very soon have a new applications thread.

There's nothing different about it or the applications system at all. There's just a shiny, empty, new thread forthcoming. So if you have the old thread bookmarked, you'll want to change your bookmarks when the new thread is made.

You see, sooner or later, you start getting close to maxing out the number of pages and comments you can have in a post. And, so far as we could tell, we were getting close--!

The old (full) applications thread is very shortly going to be closed, locked, and set to private (but not deleted, in case the mods need to retrieve something from it).

→ But before we close up the old thread for good, we want to give you an opportunity to copy any applications you may have posted there if you want a record of them. Just a little ctrl + c → ctrl + v, just a little print scrn → MSPaint. However you roll. So hit up the old applications thread and snag your apps.

We'll be leaving the old applications thread open through Monday, November 16th, 11:59pm EST so you can copy your applications.

Meanwhile, watch for the new thread ♥ It will be ready for the first next application week in December.

Questions? Comments? Various foodstuffs? Drop a line!

I have one. Why so much linking, Robot-mod? Well, the old thread will be a little tricky to find once the new one is the linked-to one, so I wanted to make the location easy to find so everyone could copy their old apps. This was the best I could do for the moment.

○ You have seven days to reclaim a character on this list, and in return, you promise three posts minimum instead of two for the next month, that's this NOVEMBER.

○ For hiatus exemptions, I go off the Hiatus Notice Page, so, please, everyone, post there! [info]poly_tldr is all well and good, but I don't remember every post there- if you did one, link me and I'll get you covered, but PLEASE use the hiatus post.

○ I make mistakes, if you're listed as inactive and shouldn't be, just comment saying so, and I'll fix it, with my apologies.

○ If you've made the inactivity list twice with a character, (this also includes trying to use hiatus to cover more than one full month's activity), they're marked for removal in the "Second Strike" column. If you wish to reclaim this character, comment and drop me a line on AIM at [steelandpride] so we can talk about it one on one.

○ If a character on this list has been dropped, don't worry about it. The end results just end up on the remove page anyway.

OCTOBER INACTIVITY LIST; )

Hi-ho, POLYchromatic and Polychromatids (or whatever you choose to call yourselves)! Your moderators here with an important announcement:

Applications will be closed from November 2nd until November 29th

That means applications will be closed for two application cycles (an application "cycle" is 1 app slot week + 1 open application week). And when they reopen on the 29th, that will be the start of a new application slot week. Anyone who posted an app during the time applications are closed can post another app during that slot week. Please see below for more explanation on app slot submissions.

The moderators have a number of things to do--like updating the general spreadsheet, updating the destinations page with a new destinations community (you read that right!), moving the information on the infosite back onto LiveJournal, and maaaa~aybe even setting up a few new surprises and details (stay tuned!).

So, because of all these other things that we want and need to do before the new year, and before our subscription for the infosite webspace expires ah ha ha, we're suspending applications for the month of November. It's going to be really hard to do all this housekeeping and keep up with applications at the same time. So rather than drag things out with applications, we're going to close them for a month, get everything else we need to do done, and then open applications back up again, ready and rarin' to go.

No apps? Onoes! But fear not!

We have suspended applications like this before, and we've usually let players submit applications to the application slot thread in the meantime. No change there! we have decided that players may submit one application to the application slot thread while applications in general are closed and the application cycle is stopped from the 2nd to the 29th. However, note that we will not be reviewing applications immediately, but we will review applications on a first come, first served basis once applications re-open. Any applications submitted to the slot thread while apps are closed will be considered once apps re-open on the 29th. Then, when apps reopen, it will be an app slot week. Please think of this app hiatus as one long app slot thread.

...got it? Maybe? Hopefully?

Questions, comments, concerns, fish, or cake, please leave a message!
Thank you!

SEPTEMBER INACTIVITY LIST; )

19 September 2009 @ 01:18 am
It's come to our attention that we need to clarify the meaning and consequences of plagiarism in polychromatic.

Plagiarism, as we define it, is directly or completely copying text of posts, applications, or writing samples and claiming them as one's own. We will also examine situations in which plagiarism is suspected based on rewording bodies of text (as in, the section is exactly same, but in a different tense, or the structure of the sentences has been inverted) in either an application or a character entry. We will investigate and make a decision on a case-by-case basis. If we determine that plagiarism has occurred, there are consequences, all which depend on the amount of plagiarism and how often it has occurred.

Some possible consequences regarding applications are

- request to rewrite a section found to be plagiarized
- removal of the entire application and therefore loss of an application cycle turn
- suspended from applying for a period of time for multiple offenses
- banned from applying to polychromatic for excessive offenses

Consequences for players whose characters have already been accepted

- removal of the character (player must reapp) if application is found to be plagiarized after acceptance
- warning if a single entry has been found to be plagiarized
- removal of the character (player must reapp) after a second warning
- suspension for the player from all gameplay for multiple offenses
- banned from polychromatic for excessive offenses

Please understand that this announcement is not meant to frighten the community into constantly checking the originality of their gameplay. We are aware that when people play the same character, many things can remain similar, including, for example, the need for a permissions post for characters with special powers that may unknowingly affect surrounding characters, or a popular fandom descriptor (such as "tsundere") for a character type. Similar ideas can occur to more than one player. Players may also be unaware of their actions or may play a character as an homage to another interpretation, whether that interpretation comes from another player, fanfiction, or published works that are considered questionably a part or not a part of canon by parent source material (an example would be the Star Wars novels). Here at polychromatic we do not consider similar interpretations as a form of plagiarism. Considering the nature of a multifandom game, it is not our place to judge the origin of a player's interpretation beyond the boundaries of what is IC or OOC. We understand that this may upset some players but this is the position we the moderators at polychromatic take on the issue. Other areas we will not consider as forms of plagiarism are plots, subplots, the dynamics of CR, and icon choices. Members of the polychromatic community are not forced to play with others who exercise practices one may not agree with (such as icon crediting or lack thereof). However we do encourage that players try to talk amongst each other about these kinds of issues if one feels extremely bothered by a practice that does not necessarily break the rules. This is why we ask that players have crit posts and/or participate in the seasonal HMD.

In the event that a plagiarism complaint is filed against a member of the community we will take all necessary steps to investigate the matter, including comparing applications, comparing entries, and any other material supplied by the filer, and speaking to the accused personally if deemed necessary. Gameplay of the accused will not be suspended during a pending investigation as we believe in the principle of innocent until proven guilty. We will not punish a player over suspicion of plagiarism until an investigation is completed and a decision on the appropriate consequence is reached.

If you feel you are being plagiarized we absolutely encourage you to write a complaint in an email or a screened comment to the Problems Thread. Please include all instances of what you believe has been plagiarized, whether it's within an application or a character entry. Although we will investigate complaints sent from non-members of the community, all complaints must be made from the player who feels he or she is being plagiarized. We will not accept third party submissions.

In an environment that focuses on creativity we understand that plagiarism is a sensitive issue. We hope this clarifies our stance on the matter. If there are any questions please don't hesitate to ask!

AUGUST INACTIVITY LIST; )

29 August 2009 @ 06:07 pm
If you've seen the September Calendar you may have noticed a note on Prison Island. It's true, there will no Prison Island after that event, which means the deities will not be holding Warden Elections for the Fall Season. The deities have decided to get rid of the Warden Position period in favor of a temporary arrangement which will be unveiled in the following week. What does this mean for the community and your characters?

For some of you, not much at all.

But for the others, the Police Force is absolutely allowed to continue operating.

If the players wish it, the Police Force can construct their own jailhouse and elect a warden either by vote within the Police Force or an open vote to the entire City. Please keep in mind that because this is no longer a deity sanctioned position there will be no moderation involved beyond basic violations of godmodding or infomodding and there will not be any payment from the City or any lawful protection from the deities themselves. The Courthouse is still open for use as usual, however prison sentences must be carried out in a way not provided by the deities or Prison Island. Because the cooperating Police Force (and Warden should they choose to create the position) would no longer be associated with City Bureaucracy, citizens can take a Police Force member to court for wrongful arrest, improper investigation, etc.

ICly, this change will not actually occur in the City until September 10th, after a deity announcement. Characters are free to wonder why no deity has asked for nominations this season. Details for the event will be posted soon and linked on the calendar.

Lastly, we thank you for playing with the Official Wardenship since its introduction in 2007! We hope its elimination doesn't impede your gaming plans and absolutely encourage players who want to try and build a similar system with their own characters.

JULY INACTIVITY LIST; )

29 July 2009 @ 07:48 pm
TAKEN LIST & YOU
Recently, there have been some issues with the Taken Characters List regarding clean up and detailing that we would really, really appreciate your help with. Many people drop characters everyday, and while your comments to the Add/Remove List are exceedingly helpful, they aren't always caught in time and relying on those comments makes it difficult, though not impossible, to keep the Taken List as up to date as possible. Sometimes people neglect to comment to the Add/Remove List at all, and while scouring [info]poly_tldr is also helpful, it is often difficult to judge how far back one should go in order to discern who, exactly, has dropped.

To help us out, we are asking and reminding that you please delete your information from the Taken List whenever you drop a character, so that incoming players who are browsing the lists don't get confused as to why Stick Stickly is still listed as a Taken Character when he has not updated since January of '08. On top of that, we would greatly appreciate it if, when you remove your character from his or her specific section - Rukia from the Bleach section, for example - and find that the section is now empty, you would comment to the page here letting us know that the section is now empty and can be removed from the list overall.

These are time consuming and somewhat annoying steps, but they do help to facilitate game play, and if they could become common practice it would be a huge help both to moderators and, more importantly, to new players coming into the game with hopes of apping a beloved character.
APPS & YOU
Lately we have noticed an increasing trend in placing quotations in applications to better detail personality sections and spruce up the application itself. While these quotations are insightful and sometimes amusing, we are going to have to ask that if you do place quotations in your applications, you please do so in an expository manner.

When moderators read an application, we are looking for your personal understanding of the character, and if your application is littered with and relies heavily on the use of quotations to explain the character, that does not, unfortunately, prove to us that you are comfortable or familiar with the character that you are applying for. While some quotations can add to the overall effect of an application, can enhance it or help to outline and detail it, when those quotations are manipulated by decorative font or overpower your background specifics, it makes it very difficult for moderators to read, and we are going to ask that you either include the quotations in a way that helps your application rather than becomes your application or that players stop using them altogether.

This may sound harsh and creatively limiting, but as applications are an important part of the game itself, we would really appreciate it if they could be kept under control. If you would like to include quotations in your application, we request that they be non-decorative and flow with the rest of the application in that the quotations themselves remain the same font size as the text around it. Using <BLOCKQUOTE> to offset the quotation itself is fine, but please do not use distracting font sizes, faces, and colors that might otherwise take away from your application, which is what we really are interested in and looking forward to seeing, and please do not let the quotations themselves overpower the application.

We also would like to take this time to ask, with new movies coming out this summer, that players please, please not include in their application sections that need to be highlighted in order to be read. Instead, we ask that you make mention somewhere that your application will contain spoilers for those who would like to remain in the dark about certain events and characterizations. While we definitely understand that you, as a player, are trying to be considerate to others who don't want to be spoiled, it makes the application very hard to read and if applications are submitted in this manner, we will ask that you resubmit them without whited-out text.

Finally, while we understand the desire and urge to correct typos and small mistakes made after an application has been submitted, we urge you to please not edit your applications in any capacity after they have received a 'Queued' notice. We cannot always tell what in an application has been edited, only that it has been edited, and so we would greatly appreciate it if applications remain as they are after they have been queued to avoid confusion in certain instances.

Thanks for reading, guys, and if you have any questions, feel free to drop them here or contact one of the mods privately.

Oh no! Inactivity Samurai is traveling around Japan like an Inactivity Ronin! What is this? Good thing the Robot is here to fill in...

...with a disclaimer: I'm not the usual final-checker and poster for inactivity, and while I know what I'm doing, I admit that there may be mistakes in this list because I'm not as familiar with the process as the usual final-checkers. And if there are mistakes, please just leave me a comment and I'll correct them. Moreover, if there are mistakes, I do sincerely apologize for them. So if anything is wrong here, please, please just let me know and I'll fix it. Mea culpa. And now, on with the show~

○ You have seven days to reclaim a character on this list, and in return, you promise three posts minimum instead of two for the next month, that's this JULY.

If you wish to reclaim this character, comment and drop me a line on AIM at [cateyedcrow] so we can talk about it one on one.

○ If a character on this list has been dropped, don't worry about it. The end results just end up on the remove page anyway.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...

I, Mary (Claire Bennet, Ruby, Sarah Walker, Veronica Mars), used to moderate here at [info]polychromatic. Sometime around this past January, I had to step down for personal reasons and because school was destroying me. Now that things have decidedly capped off and summer is starting (which doesn't mean a flat-out break for me, but, hey, when you're taking summer classes, the teachers want to be there about as much as the students do, amirite), the other fabulous mods here have allowed me to step back up and help the community and its players out again!

While I do still have finals this coming week, because Ohio State is a little bit slow when it comes to matching up with every other university in the country, unless I am offline I'm always available for questions and more than happy to hear concerns. You're more likely to catch me on Y!IM these days because AIM is loud and I get enough loud noises where I work. I will be signing on to AIM more, though, so you're welcome to ping me there if you've got anything that needs clearing up or if you just want to shoot the shit. HERE IS MY CONTACT STUFF:
y!im: sluttylittleyoda
aim: marygonemad09
e-mail: tiger_lily35@hotmail.com
journal: [info]shark_mod or [info]parashot
I hope I can do a good job for you guys, and I hope that if you do have questions you don't hesitate to ask me. If that's not enough, then have this funny Family Guy clip:

AND ONE LAST THING:

Some of you might remember that my deity character before was a Annie Lennox'd boygirl named Lenny who liked tea. Lenny is unfortunately (or fortunately, if you're me) being put into retirement, and I'd like to ask you to add this journal right here or:
friend add ofiodine

For anyone familiar with Ray Bradbury and The October Country in particular, he might seem a little familiar. For everyone else, happy trails!

Well it's that time again.

What's that you say?

The City is setting up those ballot boxes again.

Starting Friday, your characters may nominate other characters (or themselves) for the seat of City Warden and all it entails under a Deity Post. Nominations may continue till 11:59pm EST Sunday. After that, on Monday there will be another Deity Post with the election poll and polling will continue till 11:59pm EST Tuesday. We are allowing roughly two days for voting due to the curse on June 9 as well as the minor change we are making to elections.

So what's that change you say?

Votes will continue to be IC related (no personal journals please) however there will now be a write-in portion for you to tell us why your character is voting for another. That reason may be as noble as "Char A agrees with Char B's platform and would like to see justice placed first." or as corrupt as "Char B's publicity agent bribed Char A for a vote." Both reasons are legitimate and the more varied the better. Although the poll itself will be public, all votes are considered private. Write-in portions are not considered part of gameplay but players who have already agreed with each other to play out an information leak may do so (with either write-ins or votes). However unless already agreed upon, using information from the elections without permission is considered infomodding. So please don't do it.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday June 10 by a Deity and players of the Police Force and Wardenship may coordinate together as they see fit.

If you have any questions regarding the new polling system don't hesitate to ask!

Ladies and Gentlemen~!!

Happy June and rabbit rabbit! We come bearing announcements:

The application slot thread is...rather full.

Thirty-two pages? Wow. That's a lot of apps!

So! What does this mean?

This means that we have a ★new applications slot thread★.

You may have noticed it already. It's up and running! Go, please, and make good use of it. There's nothing different about it or the apps system, just a shiny, empty, new thread. Sooner or later, you start getting close to maxing out the number of pages and comments you can have in a post. And, so far as we could tell, we were getting close--!

The old (full) applications slot thread is very shortly going to be closed, locked, and set to private (but not deleted, in case the mods need to retrieve something from it).

→ But before we close up the old thread for good, we want to give you an opportunity to copy any applications you may have posted there if you want a record of them. Just a little ctrl + c → ctrl + v, just a little print scrn → MSPaint. However you roll. So hit up the old slot thread and snag your apps.

We'll be leaving the old slot thread open through Wednesday, June 3rd, 11:59pm EDST so you can copy your applications.

Meanwhile, have fun in the new thread ♥

Why so much linking, Robot-mod? Well, the old thread has gotten a little tricky to find, so I wanted to make the location easy to find so everyone could copy their old apps. This was the best I could do for the moment.

We interrupt this packing for Japan for your monthly inactivity list~ To business, Poly:

○ You have seven days to reclaim a character on this list, and in return, you promise three posts minimum instead of two for the next month, that's this JUNE.
