I haven't done anything with this community in a while, and I'm trying to cut back on quite a bit of stuff. Anyone want to take over moderation, etc., of this group? | | Thursday, August 14th, 2008 | 7:46 am [alan7388]

More Poly in the Media, from Fox News to Miss Manners
The last three months have seen a continued stream of Polyamory in the News, as you know if you've friended the nice LJ feed at LiveJournal polymedia. So where's the conservative backlash already? The coverage we're getting -- the stuff your worried mother is reading (and your boss) -- continues to range from neutral to remarkably positive, by and large. Even a Fox News commentator had decent things to say. Have the bigtime conservatives shot their wad (those are the items with my "critics of poly" tag) and quit? They've hardly peeped about us in more than a year aside from the pro-forma mentions, which haven't changed in maybe a decade, that after gay marriage polys are the next step down the slippery slope to marrying goats. Maybe they’ve realized that the more they call attention to us, the more people hear that polyamory is actually possible. So, have we been bracing for a storm that's not coming? I wouldn't bet on it; keep your wits and arguments sharp. Meanwhile, if you haven't kept up with what the world is saying about us, here's some of what you recently missed: ( Read more... ) | | Thursday, July 24th, 2008 | 2:37 pm [mactavish]

Random poly news links, from a minute's searching. These are becoming easier to find. Woot. Note: Some of these allow comments, some don't, some specifically request them. Chime in!) | | Friday, June 27th, 2008 | 11:04 pm [alles_wichtig]

Not exactly polyamory, but in some ways relevant The Australian media has been commenting this week on moves in Britain to afford legal recognition of polygamous marriages that take place in other countries http://www.livenews.com.au/Articles/2008/06/25/Australia_should_give_legal_protection_to_polygamists_Keysar_Tradhttp://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,23922968-5010800,00.htmlThis has, of course, been used as an opportunity to bash muslims: http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,23928410-5000117,00.htmlAustralia's Attorney-General Robert McClelland has responded with the same thing that he repeated endlessly when there were recent legislative changes to nearly equalise homosexual de-facto relationships with heterosexual ones, but keep marriage a purely hetero affair: "we made it clear before the election that the Government regards marriage as being between a man and a woman and we don't support any measures that seek to (change) that" | | Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 | 12:20 pm [mactavish]

New burst of positive media coverage
If you haven't been reading Polyamory in the News in the last three months or haven't friended the nice LJ feed for it at LiveJournal polymedia here's some of what you missed: ( Read more... )Now, for discussion: Loving More is surveying its members and supporters and asking, among other things, for their thoughts on the last three years of media attention. What to you think? -- Great that the media are paying such positive attention; it’ll make our lives easier. -- Nice that we’re getting this coverage, but they don't really get polyamory. -- Doesn't matter. -- May harm more than help. -- Hate it; I don't want polyamory becoming visible. Cheers, Alan (...who is always looking for news stories. If you see a noteworthy one that I miss, please let me know: alan7388 [at] gmail [dot] com.) Poly triad article in Closer Magazine in the UK
Mel Fallowfield, a contributing editor for Closer Magazine in the UK, interviewed me and my wives kyeli_unlikely and wyndhover, and wrote an article about us that was just published in this week's issue of Closer. If you live in the UK and read the article, please leave a comment and let us know what you think! She read us the copy over the phone and it sounded really good. Montel episode with Robyn Trask, TODAY May 8, 4pm
Hi all: I wanted to give everyone a heads-up about an episode of the Montel Williams show that will be airing TODAY (4pm on KTVU Channel 2 for those who are in the SF Bay Area). Robyn Trask (head of Loving More) and her family were invited to appear. We had also discussed appearing, but due to scheduling constraints, that didn't work out. As it turns out, I'm really glad we weren't there, because Robyn reports that it was a very BAD experience for her, and possibly paints poly in a bad light. Read her report below. ( Read more... )[x-posted] -- ETA:Hi all: I just saw part of the Montel episode. I missed the beginning, so I don't have the whole context. But the part with Robyn et al seemed not too bad, to me. Montel was his usual urbane self. Their guest "expert" was a judge, and she was calling for everyone on the show to admit that there was something wrong with what they were doing--BUT, in a context of "even I have things that aren't good about my own choices; we all do." She applauded Montel's handling of the show with humor, and called for people to be more tolerant, specifically because if you arouse anger, people stop listening, and aren't inclined to look at their own suboptimal behavior and make changes. Montel also wrapped up with a call for tolerance and understanding that things that we formerly thought were "out in left field" are actually all around us. So for the part I saw, I'd give it a middling grade. It could definitely have been worse, and was better than I'd anticipated given Robyn's subjective experience. What do novelist Dorothy Allison, Princeton University professor Cornel West, "sexpert" Susie Bright, Families Like Mine author Abigail Garner, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, Nickel and Dimed author Barbara Ehrenreich, Stone Butch Blues author Leslie Feinberg, Tikkun magazine editor Michael Lerner, Tales of the City author Armistead Maupin and feminist icon have in common? They all signed a controversial document released last week calling on LGBT-rights organizations to shift their focus from civil marriage rights for same-sex couples to a broader focus on legal recognition of "a wide range of relationships, households and families," including polyamorous relationships and greater access to "health care, housing, Social Security and pension plans, disaster recovery assistance, unemployment insurance and welfare assistance" for all "regardless of marital or citizenship status." from Bay Windows |
