An open letter to legal President of Honduras José Manuel Zelaya Rosales.
 Your Excellency,We, the group of people from around the world, mostly creative persons and artists (but also common people) express our outraged by unlawful actions of putschists. We believe and hope that the fairness will be fully restored and government in exile under your leadership can return to the motherland. We hope that the lawlessness will be stopped and your glorious country can be able to go forward on the way of progress and democracy still more confidently. We will do our best to support your fair struggle and contribute to the progressive development of Honduras republic. We are all united by the participation in a project that was named Sunland. Its main idea consists in the following: we want to establish a sort of art-colony and, at the same time, a self-sustaining ecological village. Tack and keep the way forward!
 On June 21, as a location for Sunland we’ve proposed Oeno from Pitcairn Islands group in Southern Pacific. Many people, who are interested in this project, expressed their doubts about such place for dislocation. Their main argument is that in this case Sunland location will be situated very far from continental land, inhabited islands and any transport communications. According to the skeptics, this would mean that all Sunland's strength have to spend to provide minimum survival conditions to a small group of volunteers. Even if these concerns are not well-grounded (because of a number of important counter arguments), they deserve to take them into account. Moreover, it turned out that due to seasonal conditions of sailing navigation in this part of the ocean (storms, currents and wind directions) it is almost impossible to get to Oeno Island by yacht this year. So, without giving up the idea to establish Sunland on Oeno Island, we must consider the alternatives. In fact, this project is very important due to its implicit philosophical, anthropological significance. There are some important questions. Whether people of the modern world are capable to set and pursue spontaneous goals? Whether their desire for full, free, true life is alive? Or their goals are fully inspired by the “hyperreality” (a French philosopher Jean Baudrillard's term), by omnipotent media brain-washing machine? Whether the existence of modern people is entirely determined by the "a priori" format? What is Sunland?
 Sunland is the unique project of community (сommune, settlement) of people, who are joint according to the principles of equality, autonomy, free self-determination of the person. Wishing a more fair life and work, the Sunland's participants have chosen for their location a desert island in Pacific ocean, that is nowadays removed from the centres of a civilisation. Any person can become a member of the community outside of distinctions of age, sex, race, nationalities or educational level.  В последнее время наблюдается актуализация "черкесского вопроса", содержание которого варьируется в зависимости от множества факторов, включая уровень понимания проблемы, политическую ангажированность, источники заказа на эту актуализацию. Единственное, на чем сходятся все актуализаторы – главные проблемы черкесского народа прямо обусловлены последствиями военных действий, которые царская Россия вела на Северо-Западном и Центральном Кавказе, населенном черкесским народом, в течение почти двух веков, и закончившиеся "парадом победы" в урочище Кбаада 21 мая 1864 года. Опять же в зависимости от различных факторов данные действия называются войной "Кавказской", "Русско-Кавказской" или "Русско-Черкесской", "Отечественной войной черкесов за свободу и независимость", "Мужественной борьбой горцев за выживание". Как бы эта война не называлась, в сухом остатке – уничтожение и депортация 90% черкесского населения Кавказа, современное дисперсное расселение черкесского народа, проживающего в более чем 50 странах мира.
Фундаментальным элементом черкесского вопроса является беспрепятственная репатриация потомков изгнанников – махаджиров либо наличие соответствующей политико-правовой базы, т.е. сама теоретическая возможность репатриации, открытость российских дверей для черкесской диаспоры. Остальные национальные проблемы воспринимаются вторичными и не судьбоносными. На самом Кавказе ныне проживает около 700 тысяч черкесов. Общая численность черкесов в мире оценивается от 3 до 7 миллионов человек, точные данные отсутствуют. Черкесская диаспора является второй по численности после русской диаспорой этнических россиян. В настоящее время можно наблюдать кристаллизацию и поляризацию позиций по содержательному наполнению и механизмам решения черкесского вопроса. В этом деле можно выделить три подхода, три направления, три центра усилий, стало быть, три группы носителей и исполнителей идей, причем мы рассматриваем черкесский народ в целом – жителей РФ и диаспору. ( Read more... ) Один из черкесских активистов, формулируя идею черкесского аналога сионистского движения, нацеленного на обретение черкесами мира своего национального очага, сказал так: "Эльбрус – наш Сион, Сочи - наш Иерусалим, Хабзэ – наш Талмуд". Остается добавить, что в этом смысле было бы хорошо, если Москва, выступившая в XIX веке в роли Рима, в веке XXI станет для черкесов Организацией Объединенных Наций. Но прежде будем ждать "Декларации Бальфура" - сигнала о готовности к диалогу, но не через 10 или 50 лет, а "здесь и сейчас", ибо дорога ложка к обеду и уходящее время работает против всех нас. Hi, Newby Here
I've just started a new community called politicsnomods. I found many politics forums had mods who would ban people if they didn't agree with their views, or for no good reason at all as far as I could see. Seemed like an oxymoron to me. Politics forum, WTF?. So I started a new community http://community.livejournal.com/politicsnomods/profile. Freedom of expression rools!A couple of experts on Eastern Europe have joined, which gives some expression to the idea that there are more countries in the world than Israel and America. So that is flattering. Would love to see a few Ruskies jump on board (not that I can speak russian), or anyone else. Remember, the big point here is no one can kick you off the blog, so welcome aboard, and behave as badly as you like! I have deliberately set the account up so I have no banning privledges, so I'm dead sincere about freedom of expression. Get on board kids,should be fun A couple of serious experts on Eastern Europe have joined, so there is at least someone here who understands there are more countries in the world than America ans Israel. В пятницу, 17 октября 2008 г., в 17.00 в Химках (г. Химки, парк Льва Толстого, "Летняя Эстрада") Московское областное отделение Демократической партии России при участии местного актива проводит митинг против действий химкинских властей, касающихся вырубки леса под коммерческую застройку (в частности платной автодороги) и воспрепятствования деятельности общественных и политических организаций на территории городского округа.  Предыдущие акции местных жителей поддержали: Росприроднадзор, ДПР, Яблоко, ЛДПР, КПРФ, "Зеленые", АКМ, депутаты местного законодательного собрания, инициативные группы столицы и соседних подмосковных районов и многие-многие другие. Нам нужна и ваша поддержка!

Is Sarah Palin the mother or grandmother of her youngest child?
Story comes from ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) shesingsnow's journal Supposedly Sarah Palin announced her condition in her 7th month of pregnancy and shows no sign of being pregnant. Yet her 16 year old daughter allegedly took off at least 5 months from school and shows signs of being pregnant. I really have no idea if there's any truth to it. The evidence presented is not completely conclusive. The story is very detailed though. Can anyone with pregnancy experience comment on it?

"The Deniers"
Last month, the National Post did a series on "the Deniers," the much-maligned scientists - many of which with zero connection to the oil industry, mind you, not that it should matter - who buck the alleged consensus on climate change. As our resident global warming preacher has spent much of the last year posting articles from Common Dreams about climate change, over the next few days, I'll provide a few articles to balance that out. All of them will be linked from the daily article if you'd like to read ahead, or you can take it slow and discuss if you'd like. Today, we focus on Dr. Edward Wegman, a professor at the Center for Computational Statistics at George Mason University, chair of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics, and board member of the American Statistical Association. According to the Post: Wegman became involved in the global-warming debate after the energy and commerce committee of the U.S. House of Representatives asked him to assess one of the hottest debates in the global-warming controversy: the statistical validity of work by Michael Mann...[and his] famous conclusion: that the temperature increases that we have been experiencing are "likely to have been the largest of any century during the past 1,000 years" and that the "1990s was the warmest decade and 1998 the warmest year" of the millennium. You may have also heard of Mann's hockey-stick shaped graph, which showed relatively stable temperatures over most of the last millennium (the hockey stick's long handle), followed by a sharp increase (the hockey stick's blade) this century."

Wegman accepted the energy and commerce committee's assignment, and agreed to assess the Mann controversy pro bono. He conducted his third-party review by assembling an expert panel of statisticians, who also agreed to work pro bono. Wegman also consulted outside statisticians, including the Board of the American Statistical Association. At its conclusion, the Wegman review entirely vindicated the Canadian critics and repudiated Mann's work.
"Our committee believes that the assessments that the decade of the 1990s was the hottest decade in a millennium and that 1998 was the hottest year in a millennium cannot be supported," Wegman stated, adding that "The paucity of data in the more remote past makes the hottest-in-a-millennium claims essentially unverifiable." When Wegman corrected Mann's statistical mistakes, the hockey stick disappeared.
Wegman found that Mann made a basic error that "may be easily overlooked by someone not trained in statistical methodology. We note that there is no evidence that Dr. Mann or any of the other authors in paleoclimate studies have had significant interactions with mainstream statisticians." Instead, this small group of climate scientists were working on their own, largely in isolation, and without the academic scrutiny needed to ferret out false assumptions.

In other words, Wegman believes that much of the climate science that has been done should be taken with a grain of salt -- although the studies may have been peer reviewed, the reviewers were often unqualified in statistics. Past studies, he believes, should be reassessed by competent statisticians and in future, the climate science world should do better at incorporating statistical know-how. As statistics on the climate issue are all we have, we must spend significant time making sure we're analyzing this correctly.
