Yes, I posted with joy here just two posts ago about my last project.

"I've done single crochet and double crochet," I thought to myself. "I've done treble crochet in a little test swatch. Maybe it's time to try a pattern."

After contemplating several different patterns, I thought I'd give this one from Lily a try since I'd really love to have a bag, and because it had lots of single crochet in it, so I figured it couldn't be but so bad. I'd just be building on what I already knew.

I didn't get very far. I was fine until I got to this part:

Do not turn. Working into other side of ch, work 1 sc in each rem loop of ch.

Eh? Do not turn? What do they mean, don't turn? Turning is a perfectly lovely and inoffensive activity in crochet. How can I work in and reach the other side if I don't turn?

I've no idea how this is supposed to work. I'm also a lefty.

Knowledgeable and kindly crocheters, I appeal to your expertise. How do I do this? What, exactly, am I supposed to be doing?

I'll try to make a little diagram:

Let's say this is my chain with the first row of single crochet:

- - - - - - - |

The | indicates the end of the chain, and it's on my right. I've got a single loop just hanging there, chillin', waiting for something to happen. What's next?

Many thanks from a humble novice!

I just finished my second project, which is linked below. The scarf is to be a thank-you gift for my mother-in-law, since she actually showed me the double crochet stitch that I used, and gave me part of the yarn (Caron's Perfect Match, if anyone is curious). It's actually cream, but such is the picture quality with my cell phone camera.

It took far longer than it should've because I pulled it out entirely three times! It's the first time I've ever done anything with fringe. I'm pleased with it, and I hope she'll like it.

As of December 2005, thanks to my co-worker, I have a new hobby: crochet.

My first project, shown below, was a baby blanket for an old friend whose second child is due in just a few weeks. My mother expressed some doubt that I would finish it before the child graduated from high school, so neener, neener, neener, Mom. :)

It's not the world's greatest picture (cell phone camera), but it's a soft yellow yarn done in single crochet with a very small loop edging:

Picture of the blanket behind the cut )

My gauge isn't perfectly consistent, but everyone at work was impressed. I'm pleased with it.

If you need any info off [info]crochet, now might be the time to do it. It's been undeleted, at least for the time being. Comments are gone, so if you need info from them, you're pretty much SOL. Also, since everyone was removed from member status, if you need something that was posted Friends Only, you probably won't be able to see it.

But if you need links to patterns or patterns that were posted on [info]crochet only, or if you have entries in your memories section that you want to print out, you really might want to cater over and get that done ASAP.

Oh, just so you know... I'm not the maintainer over there. I just noticed [info]crochet's status while doing some maintenance on my flist.

I've been a bit down with my health lately and had not strolled through the community in a couple days to see how all was going. I've found out a couple of things and am making some changes, I hope you all agree and will find that these are good things. If anyone has a problem with them please reply in comment or make suggestions and let me know so we can discuss and figure out how to make things the best.

This post is rather long winded, but I'd appreciate you clicking on the lj-cut made to save friends page space and reading anyway. It touches on the topics of a new community on LJ that affects this one, some changes made to how posts are done in the community, and some information on the TAG feature and how it will be used in this community. )

How did you learn to crochet? Did some one teach you or are you self taught?

What method(s) do you think are the best to teach some one to crochet?

What was your first project and do you still have it?

What is your favorite or best creation?

What is your favorite yarn?

What is your favorite hook?

What is your favorite pattern?

Have you ever designed something? What was it?

I have three afghans in the works at the moment and several ideas for other projects swimming around in my overworked brain! The first afghan is about 20 rows from completion.  It is a queen-sized bedspread called Granny’s Garden from Coats & Clark’s Book No. 195 copyright 1969. It is a pattern that I borrowed from my aunt.  This afghan is a wedding gift for a close friend.

The other two afghans are baby afghans both for friends. One is Leisure Arts Pastel Pineapples for Baby by Anne Halliday and I am making afghan #2 Pineapple Rows in Red Heart’s Lilac.  It is pictured here in the upper right corner in pink. http://tinyurl.com/75kee

The last baby afghan is all my own so no copyright issues! I am using several matching colors (pale yellow, pink, lilac, and the last color is somewhere between a rich lavender and pink) with two main red heart yarns, Monet and light sage green.  It is a scrap afghan in a granny square nine-patch motif.  It is in its second incarnation.  I was about halfway done before and ripped it all apart. I like it much better this time!  If I have time I might make a coordinating sweater in lilac. I’ve never made a sweater so it will be an experiment. :-)

I promise pictures of all my complete projects once my schedule allows and I have the time to figure out how to use the LJ cut properly. These are only three that I am current working on because I have other projects that  I have put aside for the moment...  all sorts of weddings and babies!

 *Blessings*

I have a calendar sitting on my desk that gives me a daily quote from a woman that is known for what she says - it's called "Wild Words from Wild Women."

Last Friday's quote (to me, at least) summed up this purpose of this community so well, I just had to share!

"People may flatter themselves just as much by thinking that their faults are always present to other people's minds, as if they believe that the world is always contemplating their individual charms and virtues." -Elizabeth Gaskell, nineteeth-century English Author

The quote just reminded that just because I have told people that I'm honest, harsh and can sometimes be on the cruel side, doesn't mean that they'e going to remember that with every conversation we have or message I post.

And to think that they will is being an inconsiderate friend - which I don't want to be!

:o)

I had Recently posted in a tarot community I had a couple decks that needed homes and someone offered to take them. I got the opportunity to put two of my loves in life together..one of the decks needed a box or a bag so I freehand crocheted a bag to put the deck in.

There are photo's below. I have a question...there is a shop down the way from here that sells tarot decks and books an the like, I'm thinking of making a few of these and taking them down to see if they want to buy and sell them. If you saw something like this in the store, what would you be willing to pay for it? The bag are handcrocheted, my own personal pattern and design, out of 100% cotton yarn. I even have some Moon Yarn that I could make a bag of if someone were interested I also have varigated yarns (they are different colors) and well, lots of other colors.

a tip for when you are doing baby layettes...I often crochet a stuffed animal to go along with the outfit. When presenting the layette I dress the bear up in the cap, booties, jacket and such, then wrap it in the blanket.

When the baby outgrows the outfit, the parents can dress the bear up and put the it up as a decoration, hanging on to a handmade heirloom for the baby to pass on to his/her children when he/she has some of thier own. I've had a lot of people who have just flipped out over this idea!

The only comment I have at the moment is that the pages, and hence the feel of the cyberspace, are so dark and foreboding. But that's just me, 'cuz I'm not crazy about reading yellow words on a black background. But that's not a slam of any kind, because I think you did an awesome job of getting this up and running!!!! part of my making this community was that I had designed these little wonders and wanted to share them with you....but I probably need to explain them to a few people.

If you watch japanese Anime, you may have noticed characters who wear little poof balls on thier hair, on the sides of thier heads. I'm thinking this could be a great seller at conventions and would be a lot of fun for cosplayers. (costumed people) So I looked at a couple anime characters wearing them, and came up with a design for them!

Now, my model is a gatorade bottle, for which I apologize. My hair isn't really suited for modeling (too much grey and too thin!) so my friend mr. gatorade bottle agreed to step in. Imagine a ponytail on either side of the girls head coiled up inside the puff and you have an anime hair puff! I apologize for the poor quality of the picture, my camera is most lame!

hair pom pictures behind the link )

One is red (made of lion brand microspun) with a pink ribbon, the other is white lion brand microspun, with a gold and purple ribbon set. They come in sets of two, one for each side of the head. I figured I could sell these for around eight bucks plus shipping...they would go in a sturdy mailer, no problem. I could even make them with lion brands glitterspun for a somewhat higher price (that yarn is very much more expensive)

Whee! I didn't want to post these in crochet for fear of a lecture on violating copyright by not posting all the information about my model (mr gatorade bottle. Fierce grape, if you want to know) and by not listing every anime character every known to wear these, what movies they were in, who the producers were, who played the character, and assorted other nonsense.

So I'm posting them here and don't have to worry about it! Enjoy the anime hair poms...if you look closely you could probably figure out how to make them yourselves (and I don't mind if you do) as they are pretty simple. If you know any anime nuts who would like a set, have them send me an email and I'll talk with them. sidhechaos a+ gmail d0+ com.

More fun crochet stuff coming up!

It's not appreciated, and many people now fear to post, or at least are frustrated about posting, in other communities because they don't want to deal with having to try and mind read what these people expect from you, and they don't appreciate continuing to get flamed and called rude things even when they make the effort to appease the troll. The moderator has not curbed the troll, and it's really gotten out of hand, so...hence this community.

Sure, there are going to be times you forget to put the copyright, or the designer's name, or any other little bit of information. You might be sharing an article and when cleaning up the html so that it doesn't mess up the page you might remove important information in the process and not realize it.

WE ALL HAVE OUR OFF DAYS.

HERE in this forum, you won't be treated like a serial killer for it. We ask that users POLITELY (and you can see examples of such in the user info) remind other users to add this critical information. We don't want to be in violation of reasonable and generally accepted rules, sometimes when we post late at night or are not feeling well though we miss things, and simply need a KIND reminder. This is really the only big difference between us and the other communities. We ask that you be polite to each other. Some people feel that they can't be bothered to do such. They aren't welcome here, there are other communities who tolerate and accept thier rudeness.

Right now this is a free journal. If anyone would like to donate, we'll give them a gold star put up thier name on the user info as a supporter of the community. I'm also looking for co-moderators to help out, and would dearly love if the users would post thier handiest crochet related links, which I will get added-hopefully in the memories set up if we can get paid status.

Do you like to design icons? Would love to see what you come up with, the community could use one! You too will get gold starred as a supporter! (I truely wish I could provide prizes for such, but I'm afraid budget is tight, hence MY not even being able to make the journal paid.)

I'm hoping somewhere in the future maybe we can do swaps, if the group likes the idea, though not everyone will have to participate, it will be a whoever wants can play kind of thing. Maybe even contests, who knows?

The main thing is stay on crochet related things, be nice to each other, and enjoy yourself. Ask questions, share information, show us those wonderful completed projects!! Tell us about your WIPS (works in progress) and your favorite yarns, favorite patterns, and ideas for going new ways of crocheting!

We are here to have fun....the polite business is mainly to remind people that it's not fun when someone jumps all over you rudely for making  a simply mistake....instead POLITELY ask for clarification of information. It will mean a less nervous, less angry, less frustrated group of people, which will mean more fun and information sharing!!!

Welcome!
