Ever since the advent of poetry scams like Poetry.com who accept and grant AWARDS to lousy poets, there has been an influx of really bad poetry being posted online by people who claim to be "published poets."
We are here to address that problem.
This is a community for those of us who are sick of those "poets" who have no idea of what cadence and imagery is; who couldn't write an evocative poem to save their lives. We KNOW what we're doing here. We might not personally like each poem members post, but we appreciate real poetry.
We can be mean and blunt and are not always very constructive. Deal with it.
This community is not intended for children. Some of the subject matter posted here may not be suitable for people under the age of 14. Children/Young Teens are strongly discouraged from applying.
By applying or posting as a member, you agree that you grant us permission to display your copyrighted poem(s) in this community. Your copyrighted material will only be displayed once in your own application or post, and will not be used by this community in any other way.
THE RULES!
For Applicants:
1. JOIN THE COMMUNITY
At the moment, the community is open and can be joined without prior mod approval. If we suffer another troll attack this will change, and we will go back to being closed membership.
You may wish to refer to our memories section or accepted members applications to get a taste of what we like.
2. POST THREE POEMS.
~ Upon joining you will be required to post ONLY THREE poems (of any style - but variety is appreciated) that YOU have written in ONE ENTRY. You MUST post your application of 3 poems WITHIN ONE WEEK of your membership request being granted. If you haven't posted within a week, you'll be removed from the community.
If your entry is longer than 40 lines, be sure to lj-cut!.
~ Your application post will be screened to eliminate trolls, so don't necessarily expect it to appear immediately.
~ We no longer accept sockpuppet (ie; defunct) journals for application. If you have no friends, comments, and/or posts made in your journal you may be rejected for application. Poetryslamming has trust-issues.
~ If a member requests that a fourth poem be presented, it must be presented in the comments of the pre-existing entry, OTHERWISE you may NOT edit your application once it's up. If it is found that you have done so, you will be banned instantly.
~ Do not screen or delete comments on your application, or you will be banned!
~ YOU MAY NOT COMMENT ON ANY OTHER POST UNTIL YOU ARE OFFICIALLY ACCEPTED! If you do, you will be banned on principle, because the owner of this community is a fascist dictator! However, you may comment on what others say about your three poems. Commentary ANYWHERE else by non-members is subject to banishment.
3. WE VOTE
~ Active members will respond, sometimes giving commentary & either vote yes or no. We are not required to give indepth critique to you. This ain't no workshop.
~ If, after your poems have been voted on for 1-7 days (moderator's decision), you have a majority of "yes" votes, you will receive access to the community as a judge and critic, and have the right to post poems for critique by other members and participate in community activities. If not, you will be banned.
~ Voting may end early in cases where the majority posts quickly and it is an overwhelming yes or no! Our members schedules vary greatly. You may get only four votes, or you may get twenty. Don't whine about it - three votes is enough to decide!
To keep it clear, your post will be 'stamped' by a moderator in one of the comments with one of the two following images:

For Those Rejected:
1. REAPPLYING
If you are rejected, and would like to apply for readmission after some revision of your work or using different material, you may contact a moderator and ask to try again. Please note that whether or not you are allowed is at the discretion of the moderator. Normally, unless you were belligerent about your previous rejection, you will be allowed a retry. Alternately, if you have another Live Journal account, you may re-join under that name and try again. Either way, please let us know that you have applied previously (and, if applicable, the name of your previous journal).
2. WATCHING
You are welcome to continue to watch this community (ie, keep it in your friends' list) before and after you have been rejected from it.
3. GROWTH
We recommend three communities in particular to help you grow as a writer, before, while & after you apply, whether you are rejected or not:
heart_on - Solely for poetry. Mix of exercises and critical feedback. You are expected to maintain a ratio of 3:1, crits to work posted.write_away - General writing workshop, poetry & prose both. Many exercises contained in the memories. lexicaledifice - Apply to participate. Prompts, critique, articles, discussion &c, &c. Less voting, more poetry. For Members:
1. Members may post additional poems for their peers' critique at any time, but must keep up with the current voting! In order for a vote to count, it must either be in the subject line of the comment, or in boldface in the body of a first-tier comment (ie; a comment DIRECTLY to the original post). Otherwise, the vote will not count.
2. Members may call for an additional poem from any applicant, but still must give a conditional "yes" or "no" on the first post.
3. Members may also make any discussion/general posts at any time they wish. If you are a member and want to advertise a writing related community here, just drop a note to one of the moderators so we can check it out first.
4. We assume that, by having poetry mature enough to be accepted, you are grown up enough to take criticism. As such, we also assume that you are grown up enough to arbitrate conflicts by yourselves. Moderators are not here to be your babysitters and no one is required to be nice to you. If you cannot handle this simple guideline, you may be warned and/or banned for being annoying, whichever the moderators see fit.
If you have an issue with the community as a whole and would like the input of fellow members, feel free to post it, but as friends only. Watch your tact, the way you protest, and your delivery. Our moderators are touchy.
