So, today I got my wisdom teeth pulled. I was really nervous last night and this morning. (I, erm, cleared out all my drawers at like ten o'clock last night--I clean when I get nervous.) But it really wasn't as bad as soon as I got in there. I don't remember falling asleep, though I do remember getting the IV in (it hurt). Right now I'm chilling and watching a lot of brainless girl movies.
When we got home, there were flowers on the doorstep from Nicole P.. It delighted me! She sent me a really cute note too. And when I came in, Philip came running up and gave me a card Laura and him had made me. It was reallyreally cute. Philip and Laura have been very helpful with being quiet/walking me around when I feel dizzy/stuff.
Btw, there's hurricane coming like right at us. So I might loose internet for a few days. We'll see.

| Weekly Baking Experiment |
[Aug 29, 2008 | 10:13am] |
Again, will be gone tonight, so baking happened last night, on my last choir-free Thursday night of the year.
Bakers: Myself, Ernie, Soupy
Recipe: Guinness Brownies
Music: Ernie playing the piano, because there wasn't really work enough for three people once the prep work was done.
Problems: Melting chocolate is not precisely difficult, but it requires a rather more elaborate set-up and more mess than I'm used to. I boiled water in a big skillet and set the smaller saucepan with the chocolate in that, since I don't have the proper pans to jury-rig a halfway proper double-boiler. Worked well, just a lot of fuss.
Improvisations: The Andersons cannot be convinced to allow baked goods to cool at room temperature because they are weird. When I wasn't looking, they put the hot brownies in the fridge to make them cool down faster. I have no idea if this is bad practice, or not, but I oppose it on principle because it's a departure from the recipe, which is excusable in cooking but in baking can mean disaster. Also, this fridge-cooling thing of theirs means that our home-made chocolate-chip cookies are always as hard as rocks. I seem to be the only one in the house who is bothered by this. I've never had these brownies before, so I don't know of the refrigeration did anything to them, but they were still yummy, so I guess I should let it go.
End result: So it turns out that stout and chocolate are a match made in heaven. Especially when no fewer than four types of chocolate are involved. If you ask me, anyway. The mother-in-law didn't like them, and said they tasted strongly of alcohol, which she hates. I don't see how that's possible, since I'm pretty sure the alcohol would have cooked out in the oven, and the only non-chocolate flavor I could detect was that of stout, which was mild and complimented the chocolate nicely. *shrug*
Of note: Ernie's repeated and unsuccessful attempts to say "Mount Vesuvius" (the brownies did that thing where they expand up into a little volcano which collapses back to normal when they cool a bit).
Also, a rather inspired monologue by myself, delivered to Soupy, on how cooking is like normal life and baking is like journeying into fairyland, in that the rules don't always make very much sense but you follow them anyway because you're afraid of what will happen if you don't, and you frequently don't know you've broken a rule until you're being punished for it much later. Soupy's girlfriend could not be convinced that I had a perfectly reasonable point when she wandered in to find me waving a spatula and saying "So you beat it for all three minutes, even though the last two minutes don't seem to make a lick of difference, because if you don't, the fairies might be angry!"

I've been feeling very muddled and broody and cluttered lately, but tonight I put Moony in my pocket and took a candle-in-a-jar from my trunk and wended my way up to the hill. Behind my house, at the end of the street, there is a hill that looks over much of the town. It isn't terrifically tall, but there is a statue (of the founder of the town, I think), and a gravestone, where either he or his horse is buried. It's a strange, overgrown place, all weeds and hummings and wildflowers and long-grass overlooking the lights of the town and the street. I've been going there more often lately and wondering why I haven't been hiding out there more often -- regretting it, now, since soon I won't live in this neighbourhood anymore. About a third of the way up the hill -- there's a gravel path -- there's a little almost-grove, surrounded by trees and bracken, sort of nestled into the woods like a hide-out. What a lovely place it would be to come & eat apples & read, I think. I'd wandered over there yesterday evening, partly by accident, because the sky was an extraordinarily odd colour around sunset, and I ran out to admire it, and ended up wandering up the hill and sitting in the grove until it began to get dark. Well, I've an album I've been meaning to listen to as soon as I could scare up some appropriate atmosphere, so I took the iPod and a candle and my long orange sweater-coat, because it's been rainy and blustery and delightfully chilly and grey all day. I sat the candle beneath a tree and lay down beside it, and there was only me and the music and the trees (and the insects, drat them).
And what music! I recently discovered Dark Dark Dark (whose name I pretend comes out of part III of "East Coker" although that's not especially likely), and they're sort of -- I don't know. Like Victorian street-music in the alleys of New York and London, cold winters and fierce autumns and full moons, and magic lurking amongst the trees that may either bless you or do you harm. They've got eerie male/female vocals, an accordian, back-room piano, banjo, cello, and, in one song, a saw (♥!). If you wandered into a ramshackle nineteenth-century circus or a turn-of-the-century amusement park, this sort of music might be played in the corners. Here, have a taste. It's the perfect music for waltzing with oneself to the light of a lonely candle on a damp, chilly almost-autumn evening -- which is exactly what I did. (It turned out to be very good music for dancing, especially my sort of awkward untrained what-does-the-music-feel-like dancing.) And when I finally wandered back home the sky was purpley-black with rainclouds, except just over the hill, where there was a thin gauze of light.
Tomorrow I shall have to be in the world again...

dramaminequeen and bitchcat, you truly are THIS lady's choice (although, for serious, if Zac Efron wanted to get in on that action, I'd totally be DOWN with that).
Caitlin: After three years at school and two without you around, you still make me laugh and think and want to do crazy things. You are one BADASS CHICK and you've got my respect and love for life.
Z-rock: You are a classy lady, the hottest thing on legs and insanely talented. I miss chatting about anime and eating Schneider specials with you while discussing life or boys (or girls...)
The two of you together are AWESOME SQUARED. Plus, you share a birthday with my sister; how cool is that?
Love you guys bunches! Happy birthday!

I suppose I consider westerns to be something of a guilty pleasure. Genre fiction fights for respectability with mainstream fiction, but westerns have to fight for respectability in genre fiction. People seem to be a lot more willing to judge westerns as a whole by their worst examples while being much more forgiving of the embarrassments to be found in fantasy, science fiction, or mystery/crime fiction. Heck, the "paranormal romance" genre gets better press these days, which just goes to show that success provides its own respectability.
It's a shame that Westerns don't get more respect, because at their best they contain incredibly powerful mythic storytelling. To be fair I find this much more in western movies than western novels, but that's probably as much an issue of what I've been exposed to more than anything else. When it comes to westerns I'm really more of a movie girl, though that expands a bit when you consider writers whose aren't really thought of as writing straight westerns, such as Joe R. Lansdale. Plus, I have issues with John Wayne.
If you've hung around here long enough you might remember that last year I was planning on doing something for Script Frenzy with a Woman With No Name character (started, didn't finish). That actually used a modern setting, but there's no doubting the theme's western roots (I also like revenge tragedies). Anyway, I've been thinking about giving NaNoWriMo another stab this year (I'm overdue; I tried it in 2003 and 2005 but failed to finish both times), and I'm seriously considering a western, preferably something that captures what I like about western movies. With two female protagonists, mind you. No use of The Person With No Name character this time. Expect further noodling on the subject, probably.
How do you feel about westerns? Oh, and have any of you read Preacher by Garth Ennis?

Today is my hubby's birthday, yay. Happy Birthday Aus!
We went to Batsto to walk around and have a nice picnic lunch. They put in a new audio tour by cell phone- pretty neat.
We also learned that the large mouth bass they keep at the nature center eats eight goldfish a day - about 2,700 per year.

My year 8 (13yo) kids were doing group work today, and, towards the end of the lesson, two girls started chatting off topic. They'd been working well up to that point, and weren't stopping others from working, so I didn't bother shushing them.
The girls are in different Health classes, and must be doing Sex Ed at the moment. One was telling the other that "there's no such thing as safe sex. You can't guarantee that nothing will happen." The other agreed, but commented that you can still protect yourself a bit.
At this point, another girl in the room piped up. "You know, everyone can hear what you two are talking about?"
One of the original pair replied, "That's ok. It's important; it's relevant to everyone in the room. Except Ms Wil, of course."
Most kids giggled. I raised my eyebrows, and the girl blushed and apologised profusely. "Sorry, Miss. I didn't mean. Oh. No. That's not. Oh."

Responses may or may not be swift, depending on a number of things like what time of day it is, how much progress I've made on the data entry project of doom, and whether or not I've recently had coffee.
Pick a fandom and I will tell you which character I would: 1. bake cupcakes for: 2. trust with the keys to my car: 3. put thumbtacks on their chair: 4. have a crush on: 5. pack up and leave if they moved next door: 6. vote for President: 7. pick as my partner in a buddy movie: 8. pair up: 9. vote off the island and into the volcano: 10. wheedle into fixing my MP3 player:
Book, movie, and tv fandoms are all fair game!

Didn't post yesterday because I fell asleep, and it was a slow fic day anyway. So, two days' worth together, such as it is.
Fic (incomplete): 1200 words of Piper and Trickster Make Terrible Jokes. I swear, I'm almost done. How did this thing get so long? It's 6000 words already! Oh, right. Sending people through a book, even a short one, takes time.
Sporking: Finished first draft of latest spork. Zexion is not pleased by the shenanigans involved. But then, is he ever?

For Happyfest II at bringthehappy there were 441 prompts. 441 is the square of one lucky prime times the square of another lucky prime. And in this case "lucky prime" not only refers to the specific mathematical term - they both happen to be numbers that are often considered to be lucky.
I have GOT to go back to school. Because I am NOT THIS SMART, I'm just BORED.

Dude, you guys, I totally failed to realize this until just now:
Monday is Labor Day! Three-Day Weekend! HUzzah!
This is fortuitous, since my Friday and Saturday are scheduled to be action-packed. This way, I have an extra day on Monday to recover, sleep, quill, and come down off the social-interaction high before I go back to work.
Yay!
