Kaiser hits out at Podolski

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has criticised Lukas Podolski for failing to play as well for his club as he does for Germany.

The forward has been persistently linked with a move away from the German champions after becoming unhappy with his lack of first-team opportunities at the Allianz Arena.

And the 23-year-old has also claimed he does not believe he has the support of club chiefs.

But Beckenbauer feels Podolski - who has been one of Germany's most impressive performers at Euro 2008 - would have no problem winning a starting place if he could replicate his international form at club level.

Writing in the Bild newspaper, Beckenbauer said: "When he complains about a lack of faith from the club leadership, I have to say: 'No one at Bayern has banned him from playing as strongly as he has at the Euros.'

"With such a performance he would also be in the starting XI at his club.

"With Poldi I have the feeling that he has grown into two people during the Euros. At Bayern he often ran slightly bent over; at the Euros on the other hand his body language says: Here I am.

"Lukas Podolski and (Bayern team-mate) Bastian Schweinsteiger have played in this tournament like we have unfortunately seldom seen for their club since 2006."

Podolski has struggled to settle at Bayern since joining from Cologne and had to make do with a place on the bench for much of last season after falling behind Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni in the pecking order.

Clubs from England, Italy and Germany are reported to be interested in the striker, including Bayern's Bundesliga rivals Werder Bremen.

Germany defender Per Mertesacker earlier this week encouraged Podolski to join him at the Weserstadion.

Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs added: "It seems to be that Poldi wants out of Munich.

"I am continuing to keep in contact with his agent. He knows what our attitude is. I don't have to now show new interest."

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - Luckless Lukas Podolski has suffered a further injury setback with a slipped disc and will be missing when Bayern Munich resume their Bundesliga campaign on Friday.

After last summer's knee injury, the 22-year-old, voted the best young player at the 2006 World Cup, struggled to break into the Bayern first team with first-choice strikers Miroslav Klose and Luca Toni blocking his path.

Podolski has had just two Bundesliga starts this season and with just five months to this June's Euro 2008 tournament, the timing of his back injury could not be worse.

Bayern's coach Ottmar Hitzfeld confirmed the news to German sports agency SID on Sunday with the Bundesliga leaders back in action on Friday night when they are at Hansa Rostock.

More will be known when Podolski has a thorough medical examination on Monday and it is unclear how long he will be out for, but the striker will definitely be absent from Tuesday night's German Cup match against third division Wuppentaler.

Hitzfeld will also be without midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has a bruised thigh, and Andreas Ottl, muscle strain.

But the news of Podolski's injury is not good for Germany's coach Joachim Loew with key midfielder Torsten Frings also struggling to be fit after aggrevating an old knee injury.

Germany face Austria in a friendly international in Vienna on February 6.

Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness has opened the door for striker Lukas Podolski to leave the Allianz Arena on loan for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old Germany international has struggled to hold down a regular staring spot with Bayern and was recently linked with a move to England to join Manchester City.

The Bavarian giants had previously dismissed talk of Podolski leaving, but Hoeness now says that that is a possibility.

He told Kicker: "We have got to talk about what we are going to do. I am torn.

"I want to help him to make it to the European Championships and if we loan him out and everything goes well, we have done everything right.

"Then we have got him games and he comes back in the summer."

Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski, who has been linked with a move to Manchester City, could be allowed out on loan by the German club.

Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness is considering sending Podolski out on loan as he has found it hard to break into the first team this season.

Bayern claim the German international, who incoming boss Jurgen Klinsmann is keen to have in his squad next season, is not for sale, but a loan move in the transfer window still seems possible.

Hoeness told Kicker magazine: 'We have got to talk about what we are going to do. I am torn.'

Your thoughts on this?! I'd love to see Lukas make a change & play in England for a while. I'd love just to be able to see him actually play. But like the article says, it'd only be a a loan so he'd be going back to Bayern.

Sven Goran Eriksson's reputation as a manager has grown since he took over at Manchester City, and he looks set to enhance it further by pulling off the biggest coup of the January transfer window in signing Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski on loan until the end of the season.

Lukas Podolski and Valerien Ismael both returned to the senior team and completed the full 90 minutes as a weakened Bayern side captained on the night by Philipp Lahm was held to a goalless draw in Tuesday evening’s friendly away to Grasshopper Club Zurich.

The men in red upped the pace in the second period and camped out in the Grasshoppers third of the field, but clear-cut chances were hard to come by and the crowd departed for home without seeing a goal.

With Luca Toni, Miroslav Klose, Jan Schlaudraff, Willy Sagnol, Jose Ernesto Sosa, Marcell Jansen and Mats Hummels sidelined, and Franck Ribery, Oliver Kahn and Mark van Bommel rested, Hitzfeld handed match practice to the likes of Andreas Ottl, Daniel van Buyten and Michael Rensing.

The game also provided a perfect opportunity for fit-again long-term absentees Podolski and Ismael to return to the senior team after a number of outings with the reserves.

Grasshoppers, coached by former Köln boss Hanspeter Latour, had the first chance of the game when Raul Bobadilla’s lob landed on the top of the crossbar, but that was the last real danger the home side posed to Rensing’s goal.

Bastian Schweinsteiger came close with a well-aimed free-kick midway through the first half as Bayern assumed a command they were not to relinquish until the final whistle.

However, a goal would not come despite an array of chances laid on by the ever-inventive Ze Roberto and the industrious Schweinsteiger. Lell, taken by surprise at the precision of the Germany man’s fine pass on 38 minutes, could only smile wryly after failing to control when all he needed to do was kill the ball and slot home, before Podolski dragged a shot wide on 54 minutes, although the striker faded after that as his lack of sharpness took its toll.

Van Buyten, Schweinsteiger, reserve striker Sandro Wagner and Ottl all squandered a flurry of openings around the hour mark, before Lell underlined why he is no recognised striker by miscuing when well-placed 20 minutes from time.

Diego Leon flashed a drive across goal and Rensing did superbly well to deny Fabio Klinger as Grasshoppers briefly threatened, but young Bayern sub Daniel Sikorsky came closest to breaking the deadlock with a flicked header before the tireless Hamit Altintop held his head in anguish after slicing the final chance wide.
