NOTE: In an effort to reduce the amount of second-guessing that may happen, I know what the purpose of this community is -- I created it Jan. 17, 2003. That said, there are already white people in this community. This is a space. Please join this community if you would like to participate in the Killing Rage by bell hooks reading project. Thank you.

The idea for this group came from my long-held interest and study into critical race theory and social construction of race theory. When you look at these theoretical praxes, the same story rears its ugly head over and over again. Racism is always a story between Black and white Americans, hostilities break out amongst Korean-Americans, Black Americans, Mexican-Americans. Asian-Americans are thought to be the "model minority" and are hated for that moniker as well as fight against it. Arab-Americans are being rounded up all over America and other peoples of color are not standing against these practices. Native Americans aren't given the voice and consideration due them as their way of life deteriorates due to poverty and other forms of systemic oppression. People of color in the United States, especially, fight against each other instead of working together to fight their common foe: white supremacy.
Part of the reason for this internal conflict is because we don't know each other or each others native cultures the way we should. There aren't many spaces where we can get together and get to know one another and appreciate the other for the brother and sister we are to each other. However, if we are to dream of a better world, we have to dream together.
Dreaming together means learning about each other. Learning about each other means coming in contact with ourselves in a meaningful way. In the mess of American culture, we have learned some pretty awful things about each other. To dream, we must let go of those things and come to see ourselves not as enemies, but friends.
The internet provides us the distance and closeness to share with each other and ourselves. To be as political as we want, as ignorant as we want, and as welcoming as we want. If we can make take this small space and use it to bridge the differences between us, realizing that those differences aren't harmful, bad, wrong, just differences, we can take a progressive politics into our everyday lives and help forge alliances, friendships, and bridges where before there were none.
Welcome.
