| The future of PocketLJ... |
[Apr. 19th, 2009|10:28 pm] |
So here it is folks, and you probably expected this...
You will have noticed that there has been no development on PocketLJ for a couple of years now. At the same time, I’ve noticed that there’s been very little activity on PocketLJ for a while.
In April there has been 1 post made. In March there were 3 posts made. In February there were 5 posts made, and one of those failed. In January there were 6 posts made. In December there were 4 posts made, and one of those failed. In November there were 21 posts made. In October there were 6 posts made. In September there were 14 posts made, and one of those failed.
When I started developing this client, I was so fired up about it, and I wanted everyone to use it. As time has gone on, I’ve stopped using the client myself, having not even installed AvantGo on the phone that I got in January 2008. Having two kids, moving house and <insert other lame excuse here> have all contributed to me effectively abandoning it. To compound the problem, I’m switching to Android in June/July, so development is even more unlikely that it is at the moment!
So, unless someone tells me they want to take over the development and hosting of PocketLJ, I will be ceasing the PocketLJ service on Sunday 31 May 2009.
As it happens, the pocketlj.com domain - which only hosts the website, not the PocketLJ service itself, is registered up until June 2013, so I’ll be giving first dibs on that to anyone who wants to take PocketLJ on. Don’t worry, I won’t be making a profit out of it, just a proportion of what I paid out.
This hasn’t been an easy decision for me to make, as this was my baby for so long... but the decision has been made somewhat easier by the downturn of usage which, while disappointing, was only to be expected.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of your for your support and input into this project, and I apologise for not dedicating the time into making it as good as it could have been.

| Offline Browser |

| [ | mood |
| | frustrated | ] | I used to use "PDA Converter" but it is no longer supported and I am having conduit issues. I have had SOME success with Avantgo, but now Palm OS 4 doesn't seem to take it these days.
Does anyone know a decent (and cheap) system for downloading web pages to my Tungsten|E for offline reading? That still works? |

| Question |
[May. 11th, 2008|08:28 am] |
Hello,
I just joint this community, and first of all would like to thank the author of PocketLJ for writing the program!
Second of all, I have a question (of course). I understand how to create entries off line and post them later (though I have not tried doing that yet). What is more important for me, however, is an ability to edit (offline) existing entries of the journal, or at least one such entry. Is that an option? Thank you in advance for your comments. |

| test post |
[May. 6th, 2008|11:42 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | curious | ] | i was having issues with palm desktop in addition to my pocketlj woes, so this is a test to see if fixing palm desktop also fixed pocketLJ.
ETA from the desktop: well, that seems to have gone OK, but then so did my first post the last time. it was the second post that choked. so i'll try posting to my own journal in a bit, after i finish eating.
ETA2, a half hour later- test post to my own journal worked nicely. Looks like it was some sort of PEBKAC all along, Dave. Hope you haven't put too much effort into the situation. |

| PocketLJ issues with eating posts :( |
[May. 1st, 2008|09:39 am] |

| [ | music |
| | my dog gnawing on a bone outside my office door | ] | I've been using PocketLJ for years now, though not much recently due to a)having a laptop that travels with me and b)having issues between my Palm device and Linux. However, my husband gave me a new Palm device for my birthday this week (yay SuperHubby!) and apparently Ubuntu Heron has resolved my other issues. So, I installed the appropriate AvantGo software and the wireless keyboard drivers, and managed to make this test post on the first attempt. So far so good. But last night I wrote a much longer post (took me over 45min to write), and it's vanished.
AvantGo says it sync'd successfully, and all my other content is updated. But my post is not in my journal. Worse, when I go into the pocketlj Forms Manager, the *post* is there, with the relevant subject line, tags, mood, etc all right where they ought to be. But the body of the post - all that text - is NOT. Completely blank. Furthermore while Forms Manager also claims it updated my preferences (changing default security to "friends" from "public") they are still set to the defaults :(
Needless to say I'm not quite as impressed with PocketLJ as I was the night before. I'm hoping this is something simple.
Device Tungsten E2, running PalmOS 5.4 (Garnet) AvantGo v6.5 build 216 (it lists more info "about AvantGo" than that, can provide if needed) PocketLJ v1.3a (or so it tells me on the opening screen) Base OS on sync-ing computer: Win XP Pro
Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? |

| PLJ - WAP |
[Feb. 22nd, 2008|02:55 am] |
|
According to the website... there will be a WAP version of PLJ coming out. Is this in the works or just a current idea or is it already out there and I don't see it? I found one client that works on my phone but it is overly simplistic. I want to be able to read and post to journals. The client I downloaded just allows me to post, the mobile lj page just allows you to post, and I can't seem to get past the secured login when directing my mobile browser to the original livejournal.com. PLJ's description sounds like what I want so I'm hoping it is coming soon - if not, does anyone have any ideas on where else to look? |

| Won't let me change my password |
[Oct. 20th, 2007|09:11 pm] |
I've been using PocketLJ for a while, but I have encountered a problem. It won't let me change the Livejournal password I send to the server. I recently changed my LJ password on my account, but when I went to change it in PocketLJ it wouldn't cooperate and let me change it. I have tried deleting Avantgo, clearing all my data, even erasing the username in question from my device (which it also won't let me do), and reinstalling everything, and it still won't let me change the password, or add any new users.
Assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :) |

| Still troubling with downloading PocketLJ |
[Sep. 30th, 2007|06:57 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | numb | ] | Yay.. I'm going crazy o.0 I finally added the Pocket LJ channel to my channels. Synchronised my device 5 times with ActiveSync. It synchronise Windows Pocket PC, Favorites, Documents (dutch: Bestanden) and Media. I go to the avantgo site on my device, clicked on the Pocket LJ link and I'm getting this:
Bad Request Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.
Then I opened the AvantGo program on my device, searched for channelsbut no channls found. I got to the Avantgo site on my moms computer and I see there are no channels installed on my device. And when I was at the Avantgo program on my device I synced it for about 3 times. Succesful, but not helping me anything.
Sorry if I bother you, but this is really complicated for me ?? |

| Playing with Pocket LJ |
[Sep. 26th, 2007|10:53 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | geeky | ] | Long time Avant Go user, so I'm willing to give this a try.
First complaint, the Wizard. I have a mind like a Steel Sieve. I've set up the Pocket LJ channel (that was easy, I've done that a lot before, not a problem). But it will probably be a couple of days before I do a sync, by then I'll have forgotten the rest of it! I may even forget I set up the channel. Yes, I will make a note in the PDA that I need to finish the set up.
But it would have been Real Nice to Just Print the Damn Thing Out! Then I would be more likely to remember.
Did I tell you I have a mind like a steel sieve?
There is a reason I am on my second pda, having used to death the first one (and the second one is dying). I have no brain, it is backed up on my computer somewhere... |

| Server move - Phase 1 complete |
[Sep. 23rd, 2007|10:34 pm] |
Hiya,
Phase 1 of the server move is complete, and all users are now set to use version 1.3a of PocketLJ. Users will need to resync to see the new version, although even without resync'ing, you'll still be using the newer version to post with. This new version should see the end of the 403 errors.
Phase 2 is the database move, which should bring performance improvements, and will happen in the next couple of weeks.
Cheers, Dave
EDIT: Although the version change has happened, it looks like we're still waiting for DNS records to be modified around the world... so 403s might happen for a short while yet. I'll update this when it's changed.
EDIT: A bit late, I'll grant you... but everything seems to be ok now. Unless you tell me otherwise...? |

| Server move... update |
[Sep. 22nd, 2007|10:31 pm] |
Dear all,
A few months ago, I said that the server that PocketLJ sits on is being changed. Well, the first phase of the change will have taken effect by this time tomorrow. You shouldn't notice anything from your point of view, except that you'll get a reminder on your PocketLJ front screen saying that you should upgrade to the newest version. This is the one that will hopefully stop the 403 errors that you've been experiencing. I'll post more details about that tomorrow.
The second phase of the move, for which you might notice a couple of minor issues, will be happening within the next week or two.
I'll keep you posted with the progress.
Cheers, Dave |

| Server move... |
[Jun. 17th, 2007|09:18 am] |
Dear all,
The server that PocketLJ sits on is being changed. This is for speed and stability improvements. I have decided not to pull PocketLJ down in order to migrate it, in order to minimise disruption to you guys. However, this does mean that there will be a 24 hour period where changes you make to your preferences may not be recorded.
I’ll give you a weeks notice of the change, which for the majority of you will not affect you at all.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this.
Also, once this server move has been successful, I will move PocketLJ to the new version that fixed the 403 issue that people were experiencing.
After that, we’ll see about making PocketLJ even better! :o)
Cheers, Dave |

| 2nd request for testers... |
[May. 13th, 2007|08:56 am] |
Hiya,
I haven't had any responses to my request for testers from last week. I'm really anxious to get this fix tested and released as soon as possible, as I know that some of you are still experiencing problems with the existing version.
I would really appreciate as many volunteers as possible for this.
Thanks, Dave

| Request for testers... |
[May. 3rd, 2007|12:19 pm] |
Hiya,
I need 5 testers to have a go with the new version of PocketLJ. I would prefer people who have experienced the '403' error in the past, so as to see whether I have managed to solve the problem. This new version has no additional functionality, other than to (hopefully) address this one issue.
The first 5 people to comment positively against this post will have the new version applied to their client later on today (depending on your timezone, of course!).
Thanks in advance! Dave

| PocketLJ Update... |
[May. 1st, 2007|08:25 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | hopeful | ] | I have basically rewritten the code that sits behind PocketLJ (some of the code was up over 6 years old!!)
I have passed this rewritten version to doniago to evaluate, and then I'll offer this version to others to test if the initial evaluation is successful.
I really want to restore people's confidence in PocketLJ - it's quite an important project to me - I hope I don't let you down.
More soon...

| 403 Error... |
[Jan. 21st, 2007|01:57 pm] |
Ok, the good news is that I've managed to reproduce the 403 error.
The bad news is that I have no idea at all why it's doing it. At least now I have a starting point to work from. |

| Errors... |
[Jan. 20th, 2007|04:14 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | curious | ] | Ok, I've been doing some testing of PocketLJ, and so far I haven't had any issues with it.
However, when doing a test post earlier on, I did get the following message:
"Forbidden You don't have permission to access /415514.html on this server."
Is this typical of the error message that you guys are experiencing?
Edit: I know that some of you have posted different errors, and I am trying to reproduce those as I go - without success so far - I'm just trying out all angles. |
