Hi again everyone,

This question is for the NoVA/DC/MD brides in the group.

My mom lives in Fairfax, VA and I'm going to be visiting her in the middle of September. I was debating about visiting some of the bridal shops up there to try on dresses and I'm wondering if there are any shops up there that have samples of plus size dresses to try on.

I'm a 22/24/3x in off-the-rack stuff and I can't see trying to get into a dress that I can't get past a thigh.

Also, if you aren't sure but you enjoyed your experience at the shop, share the name of the shop. I'm more than willing to hunt down their contact information to call or email them.

Cutesy "Bride" Tanks

So, I've been seeing these cute little overpriced tank tops with "BRIDE" emblazoned across the bosom in a sparkly cursive type script but I haven't been seeing them in a size to fit me. Until today. I came across the Kiyonna Klothing store (http://www.kiyonna.com/plus-size-clothing/To_Be_Wed_Wear) and they have one in a 22-24 but all the others are a 0X for a size 10-12.

I like the tank with the little jewels that spell out "BRIDE" and I'm wondering - is there somewhere I can just buy a transfer and make my own "BRIDE" tank top? Iron-ons I understand and are easy but if it is more difficult than that, I'm going to need some instructions :c)

After making a few items for a friends wedding we decided to start making our own range of alternative wedding clothing. All the items on the site so far are made up to size 26 and can be made in different colours.

Shimmer and sparkle in our hooded cloak. The cloak is made from twinkle organza for a subtle glittery effect. It is cut to be slightly shorter at the front and sweeps out into a train at the back. The cloak is finished with a overlocked stitching and closes with a frog fastener.

The Angelica top is a tunic style top with floaty sleeves. The top is made from cotton interlock and has a rounded neckline. The sleeves drape from the elbow into a pixie point and are finished off with overlocked stitching. The top is finished off with zig-zag stitching.

The Amethyst skirt is made from 100% cotton interlock. It has two panels at the front and two panels at the back. This helps the skirt to flare out from the waist into an a-line cut. The skirt has overlocked stitching detail and is reversable. So you can have two different looks with or without all the stitching showing.

The bridal rose skirt has a mermaid style cut and is made from 100% cotton interlock. It has 3 panels at the front and 3 panels at the back for a more fitted look.

The Angelica skirt is made from 100% cotton interlock. It has three panels at the front and three panels at the back. The skirt is cut to be long at the front and sweep back into a train at the back.

The Amethyst top is a tunic style top with huge pointy pixie sleeves. And is made from 100% cotton interlock. The top has a stretchy neckline and can be worn sitting on your shoulders, or as a long rounded neckline.

Rose Gold Wed Dress

HI everyone,
I hope you all can help me. My wedding is in 14.5 months (October 2009) and I'm on the hunt for a dress. I'd love to have a dress in a color called rose gold but I'm having trouble finding one. I can find dresses in rose. I can find them in gold. But the rose gold is remaining elusive. I saw the color in a bridal magazine somewhere and I can't find the danged magazine }:-/ Has anyone besides me heard of this color and does anyone know what designers are using this color in their dresses?

Beautiful Never Worn Wedding Gown

I hope this is okay to post, I didn't see anything in the community info about selling things not being allowed.

I'm selling a size 26 Alfred Angelo wedding gown that I never got to wear. Details (and large pictures) are below the cut.

This is a size 26 wedding gown I bought in February 2006 for my October 2007 wedding. Unfortunately, in the interim, I gained a lot of weight from a new medication that made me too big for the dress. I don't have the exact measurements, but when I was sized, my bust and waist were 54inches and my hips were 50 inches. It was shipped brand new from the manufacturer and was only tried on twice. It's been kept wrapped in a white sheet within a white David's Bridal garment bag since I received it. It has no stains or imperfections and has been kept in a smoke-free, pet-free home. I would love to see somebody else have a chance to wear it. The cut and style would look good on anybody, but it is especially good in hiding big middle sections or hips.

In this price, I am also including the crinoline I purchased to wear under this dress. It's an adjustable size (tie waist) and fit me even after I couldn't fit into my dress. It could also fit a much smaller size. I DID wear the crinoline on my wedding day, but that's the only time it was ever worn.

The dress itself retails for $375. I paid close to $500 for the dress, crinoline and shipping costs.

Custom Wedding Dresses

Hello everyone!

I was browsing communities and ran across this one (tagged with costume design). I know it's pretty hard finding a nice wedding dress in your size... So I wanted to offer my help. I was one of those brides about a year and a half ago that needed a dress... that wasn't boring and that would fit me... so, I made my own. I just graduated with a bachelor of fine arts in costume design and construction and I decided that I wanted to cater to plus sizes, specifically historical costumes and wedding dresses. Needless to say, my designs and ideas are quite... different.

I have a business that is going on 3 years. I mostly just have an etsy shop now, but since i have graduated I am slowly starting to integrate formal wear (http://ifautumnends.etsy.com). I have done a lot of formal wear and historical designs that you can see in one of my photobucket albums if you go to http://www.ifautumnends.com . I can work with you to create a custom design generally between $150 and $1200 (many factors vary this). So, all price ranges.

Three wedding-dress-shopping questions

Hi all! I need to start shopping for a wedding dress soon and have three questions:

1. Because (as I understand it) all wedding-dress lines run small, am I totally screwed if I'm actually a 24 in regular clothes? Like, will I need to wear a 28 or 30 and therefore be sized out of most bridal shop stuff?

2. Are you supposed to buy the undergarments before you go dress shopping (to check how they work under the dress) or after?

3. Is there a bridal shop in the New York area you'd recommend? I'll go anywhere--New Jersey, Philadelphia, CT--for a nice experience and a decent selection. If you know of a great one in Chicago I'd take that too!

Informal dresses in NYC

For those of you looking for an informal dress, Lisa of the amazing Brooklyn plus size boutique Lee Lee's Valise just emailed me to say that she'll be getting this dress in ivory and pale blue starting in April. (Now that's service -- I tried on the same dress in green in November, and she remembered to let me know it was coming in in wedding-y colors. Lisa's amazing.) Lisa says she talked Tadashi into cutting these for her -- I don't know how much truth there is to that, but I think it's quite possible that it's the only place you'll be able to get these dresses this season (other colors are on sale several places), and it's really as beautiful as it looks. In general, Lee Lee's Valise is definitely worth a look if you live in or are visiting NYC, and especially if you're interested in a floaty dance frock as a reception or rehearsal dress.

I was looking at size charts for dresses. I'm having trouble! My hips are 60. my waist is 46 and my bust is a 52... all the dresses that fit my hips are way too big on top. Do you order a dress to your biggest part? I found a beautiful bridesmaids dress that is 159, but the wedding dress that is almost the exact same thing is around 400. Is anyone going to know its not a wedding dress? I'm afraid with my proportions i will not look pretty on my wedding day... just like a pear covered in snow... I was thinking of losing weight, but I dont think I could possibly change my body shape!!

any help on how to size a dress would be lovely. thanks a lot!

David's bridal dress size 22
Satin A-line halter with split front, beaded lace, removable modesty panel, and lace-up back. Chapel train. Ivory witch Champagne sash.

I paid 650 for it, I'd like to get at least 400. Minor alterations made to it, just had the modesty panel brought up a bit and the halter part for the neck brought in. I also have a full crinoline size 22(but its got a very stretchy waist), longline bra white size 42d (I think) and veil(seen in pictures) I'm looking to get rid of. Just make an offer on those if your interested. I am willing to provide pictures of anything you'd like to see.

Via fatshionista, I learned about fatbrides, for a slightly different take on things. And via fatbrides, I found out that Zaftique has some wedding dresses. On the minus side, they all look a bit shapeless and most of them are on a rather slender model. On the plus side, at least they have a non-white model, which most bridal companies seem to be positively allergic to. Anyway, some of the styles are nice--check it out.

It's an Alfred Angelo style 1476 in a size 22, unaltered.

Why am I selling it? Well partially because I need the money, partially because I'm looking into getting another dress that'll fit me, and the occasion better.

Hey. Long time engaged gal, first time poster here. Well, I'm hoping to whittle a bit of myself away so this won't be as much of a problem for my wedding next June, but I am a bride's maid in three weeks. I am also going out of town for another wedding reception the week before that wedding, so I need to get my alterations done really quickly. But first I need to find my undergarments!

Okay.. I'm going to be honest with my requirements so maybe it'll be easier for someone to help me. The bride picked a spaghetti-strap dress, so I need strapless. I also need really good.. waist coverage I guess. My two main issues I want to cover up is I have that.. er.. overlap that some overweight women get on the side of their bra that can be unsightly.. not really side-boob, more just side-fat. the only bras I've found that control this nicely are Lane Bryant bras-- they have a vertical wire in the side that nicely smooths things down. I've tried a Lane Bryant strapless bra, but had a horrible raction to the skid-proof material they put on it to keep it from budging. I think it has latex in it and I'm allergic to latex-- not anaphalctic shock, but I got a horrible rash and get red and irritated from latex. Anywho, my other problem is my sides are not the same shape. I'm fat either way, but.. I'm firmer, I guess on one side and mywaist/hip curves nicely-- no side overhang if say I'm wearing jeans (standing up). On the other side it just kinda bloops out, usually pull my jeans over it so I need something that is more than just a little smoothing to even things out. I dunno why I'm like that. I've lost and gained weight and it happened after I'd lost a ton of weight and even after I gained it back, it didn't even out.

I tried on Spanx.. the ones that go from thigh coverage to right below the bra. It was very uncomfrotable and also.. this is weird.. but it kinda accentuated my stomch and made me look more rolley.

So-- looking for very supportive bra thing that preferably is a bustierre that will go all the way past my hips to smooth things out. My legs are very thin and toned (sigh.. my body makes no sense), so I don't really need coverage there. I'd prefer a one-piece thing as they're more comfortable. I'd like one to go all the way past my hips to prevent bunching and riding up around the waist area and to smoooth out my paunch.. also a one piece wouldn't dig in right under my side-boob fat, where I get easily irritated.

One of you posted in weddingplans last week soemthing similar to what I'm looking for and I'm wondering if you tried what you linked and how it works.

I've been married for over a year now, so I haven't been as active as I had been in this community, but I am an artist, and I wanted to share with you guys my newest creation - since it's centered around weddings :)

I make pocket mirrors, and I drew 5 different brides, and 6 different grooms that I can color to your wedding/skin/hair colors and totally customize with your names, dates, phrases, etc. They're pretty cool. They make great wedding favors, or great Bridal Shower gifts, or Bridal Party gifts - they're a lot of fun. Pretty affordable too, for the amount of customization that goes into them. For this price you can usually just get run of the mill stuff. I can make these for you as pocket mirrors, or magnets. These make great "save the date" magnets too. They're all 2 and a quarter inch around and highly professional.

These are slated to be reviewed and featured in the next issue of The Knot, when they get popular from that, I will probably end up raising my prices to keep up with the demand, so if you want them, don't wait!

possibly selling dress

Somebody was asking about buying charity/second-hand wedding dresses in alternative_wed, that got me thinking that storing my dress isn't very necessary. I'm wondering if there is anyone here who would be interested in buying my dress. Well, first I need to make sure it's okay to even throw a selling entry in here, and then see if anyone is actually curious. It's getting some small alterations right now, (wedding is 4/28) so I don't have any good pictures to show. It's an Angelique, size 26, and ivory. If anyone is remotely interested, I'll post some pictures later with more details.
