So AIG got a bailout of $84,000,000,000 and then sent its executives on a luxury retreat that cost $440,000. Instead of being outraged, the government just gave them $38,000,000,000 more. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/livecoverage/2008/10/government_to_give_aig_more.html?hpid=topnews
Meanwhile Wachovia is supposedly in dire straits and will receive a government bailout, yet Wachovia managed to loan $8,000,000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee. http://www.openleft.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=8937
So instead of talking about issues like this, McCain wants to get his supporters angry and scared of Obama because Obama knows a guy who was in the Weather underground when Obama was 8 years old, because the McCain campaign admits that actually talking about the financial crisis will be bad for his campaign, so they're just going to make nastier more aggressive attacks instead. And they have the gall to claim there are unanswered questions about this. If they're going to play the guilt by association game, how about Palin continuing to go to a church which preaches anti-semitism, or giving her blessings this year to an anti-US Alaskan secessionist group? How about McCain and Palin saying nothing when their own supporters angrily shout that Obama is a "terrorist" and "nigger" and "hooligan" who should be killed? And McCain's wife has the chutzpah to claim that Obama has "waged the dirtiest campaign in American history”? Boggle.
--- Lastatempa korupto dum la usona financa krizo. Firmaoj kun bankrotaj problemoj misuzas la monon, kiun donas la usona registaro al ili (ekzemple por multekosta luksa ekskurso por la firmaaj gvidantoj). Kia surprizo.
Anstataŭ diskuti tiajn gravajn aferojn, la kampanjo de McCain esplicite konfesas ke tia diskutado malhelpus al McCain, do anstataŭ ili simple pli agrese atakos Obama per stultaĵoj, ekz ke li iom konas homon kiu estis membro de kontraŭregistara grupo antaŭ 40 jaroj dum Obama estis infano. Dume Palin kaj McCain havas pli freŝajn firilatojn, ekzemple la ankoraŭ ĉeestado de Palin en preĝejo kiu predikas kontraŭ judoj, kaj amikeco kun kontraŭusona alaska grupo, kaj la subtenantoj kiu nomas Obama murdinda teroristo kaj negraĉo, dum McCain kaj Palin diras nenion kontraŭ tiaj danĝeraj fidiraĵoj. |

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499238/ Belege filmita, kun iuj fortaj scenoj, sed iel la filmo ŝajnis distanca kaj ne tute kaptis nin. Beautifully filmed, with some powerful scenes, but somehow the film seemed distanced and didn't fully grab us. Pięknie wygląda ale coś brakuje. |

Exploiting another crisis to help build a police state

Rep. Brad Sherman says members of Congress were secretly threatened with martial law if the bailout didn't pass immediately! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaG9d_4zij8 Crisis, crisis, you must pass this legislation proposed by the administration without taking time to read it or think about it. Just like how the PATRIOT Act was rushed through after 9/11.
And a US Army Brigade has already been deployed in our "Homeland", authorized to be the president's personal police force on US streets, using the same methods used with Iraqi citizens. For more than 100 years -- since the end of the Civil War -- deployment of the U.S. military inside the U.S. has been prohibited under The Posse Comitatus Act (the only exceptions being that the National Guard and Coast Guard are exempted, and use of the military on an emergency ad hoc basis is permitted, such as what happened after Hurricane Katrina). Though there have been some erosions of this prohibition over the last several decades (most perniciously to allow the use of the military to work with law enforcement agencies in the "War on Drugs"), the bright line ban on using the U.S. military as a standing law enforcement force inside the U.S. has been more or less honored -- until now. And as the Army Times notes, once this particular brigade completes its one-year assignment, "expectations are that another, as yet unnamed, active-duty brigade will take over and that the mission will be a permanent one." See the article at http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/09/24/army/index.html
Naomi Wolfe argues that this is effectively a coup; a radical but interesting discussion here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XgkeTanCGI She makes a good case for it. Consider her 10 steps to a police state: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/apr/24/usa.comment 1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy (9/11, the financial crisis) 2. Create a gulag (secret prisons outside the normal rule of law: Guantanamo, "renditions" of prisoners to foreign dictatorships for torture) 3. Develop a thug caste (unregulated security contractors in Iraq; right wing extremism in the US, e.g. see below about McCain's supporters recently) 4. Set up an internal surveillance system (PATRIOT Act, secret illegal surveillance) 5. Harass citizens' groups (infiltration of anti-war groups; no-fly lists) 6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release (hundreds arrested during Republican National Conventions and war protests) 7. Target key individuals (punishment of whistle blowers and scientists who don't toe the party line) 8. Control the press (reporters who only report what the administration tells them without questioning or investigating) 9. Dissent equals treason ("you're with us or against us", right wing talk radio, and see below about McCain's supporters) 10. Suspend the rule of law (ignore the Geneva Conventions, ignore laws against spying on US citizens, ignore laws against illegal imprisonment and torture, ignoring The Posse Comitatus Act and deploying the army against US citizens)
Meanwhile, McCain's new "aggressive" campaigning leads to his supporters labeling Obama a "terrorist" and shouting "kill him" - while McCain and Palin hear their supporters shout such dangerous calls to violence and incredibly say nothing to oppose it. This is disturbingly reprehensible and irresponsible: http://www.americablog.com/2008/10/kill-him.html Recently a Polish friend asked me if I was worried Obama might be assassinated. At the time I said "not really", but now I'm starting to wonder. How can McCain look at himself in the mirror when he's encouraging such dangerous hate simply to help his campaign? |

Dum la lastatempa ArKonEs ravis min la koncerto de sveda Esperanta bando La Perdita Generacio, pri kiu mi antaŭe tute ne aŭdis (aŭ forgesis). Temas pri ia eksperimenta/alternativa iom popolinfluita rokmuziko kun iom diversaj tradiciaj kaj netradiciaj intrumentoj, malfacile priskribebla, sed tre plaĉa kaj bonkvalita laŭ mi. Iuj kosmaj kantoj iom memorigis min pri Yo La Tengo kaj Bettie Serveert (pli famaj sukcesaj anglalingvaj bandoj, kiuj plaĉas al mi), sed La Perdita Generacio vere havas propran sonon kaj stilon, kaj iuj kantoj tre rapidas kaj petolas. La kantotekstoj ofte spritas, kaj la kantado kutime bonas kaj klaras, kio gravas al mi. Krome ili estis sufiĉe amuzaj kaj afablaj homoj. Do se vi, kiel mi lastatempe, pensas ke indas finance subteni bonan Esperantan muzikon, mi tre rekomendas provi ilian muzikon ĉar eble ankaŭ vi trovos ĝin aĉetenda.

During the recent ArKonEs I was delighted by concert by the Swedish Esperanto band La Perdita Generacio (The Lost Generation), whom I'd never heard of before. It's sort of experimental/alternative somewhat folk-influenced rock with rather diverse traditional and nontraditional instruments, hard to describe, but quite pleasing and high quality IMHO. Some of the cosmic songs reminded me a bit of Yo La Tengo and Bettie Serveert (more famous successful English bands I like), but La Perdita Generacio really has their own sound and style, and some songs are quite fast and silly. The song lyrics are often clever, and the singing is good and clear, which matters to me. Plus they were fun nice people. So check it out!
