In Need of The Sorting Hat...
- What sort of profession in the wizarding world would you choose and why? I'd like to think I'd be an auror, but really I don't think I have the guts... I'd rather let someone else take care of the bad guys. I think a technomancer would be cool, integrating Muggle and magical to create all kind of bizarre gadgets and gizmos - I think it would make me a fortune, and I could also have a side-line in defence and security equipment, which would support Magical Law Enforcement and would mean I could still feel I was doing my bit against future wannabe dark lords.
- If you could teach one class at Hogwarts, what would it be and why? Defence Against The Dark Arts, because from a teaching pov it's really flexible. One week you could do spells, then theory, then history, plus throw in a little bit of dodgy magical creatures to spice things up a little. Having 'guest speakers' would be really fun too, everything from aurors and Wizengamot members to vampires and werewolves. Maybe even hold one class in the great hall so that a giant can talk, there have to be intelligent ones out there, they can't all be like Grawp. I think it'd help people get over wizarding prejudices, find out where pure blood supremacy is such a bad idea, and also teach people to defend themselves.
- This year, The TriWizard Tournament is being held once again and you're of age. Do you put your name in the Goblet? Why or why not? No. Partly because I'd be worried and partly because it'd be too much hard work - I wouldn't be able to just sit back and go with the flow, I'd have to research everything to try and find a solution... however if I'm of age, I've got my NEWTS to be working on, so I'd give it a miss. That said, to up the entertainment value for me I would sneak someone elses name in - an enemy, someone who's not so stupid they'll instantly lose (ie not Crabbe or Goyle), but is going to have to struggle (more like Ron); then I'd smirk about it with my friends and sit back to enjoy the show. No animated badges or anything though, if I'm going to sneakily add someone I'm not going to give the game away by ridiculing them - in public just be coolly indifferent... whilst gloating in the common room.
- If you could choose your animagus form, what would it be and why? That's a toughy. I'd like to be able to fly; it would just be amazing, give me so much freedom and I think I'd really enjoy it... plus there's always the old swooping down from the clouds and scaring people silly. And terrorising muggles by chasing their cars down dark country lanes, making them think they've gone mad. Ooo, and scratching on kids windows in the middle of the night.
BUT... I'd like to be able to sneak about and spy on people; so that would need to be something small and inconspicuous. Or invisible. But not something that could be easily crushed or killed accidentally (a beetle, Rita? Perhaps not the best choice).
ALSO... I'd like to be able to be big, mean and toothy if the situation called for it; feline sleek and predatory, something that could be at home in the dark forest, and would be able to scare people senseless. I think I'd enjoy hiding in bushes outside pubs and chasing down drunk people.
So, to conclude, a flying, shrinking, invisible snake-cat. And not just any kind of flying, shrinking invisible snake-cat but a big one, I'm thinking panther here more than house cat... I think that kind of animal, would require research of Newt Scamander proportions, because eventually I'd hope to find some kind of mythical creature that fits the bill. - What HP character do you identify with most and why? Blimey. Well Voldemort because I'd like to have minions. Moaning Murtle because I could spy on the school hotties in the showers. But mostly, I think it would be Snape.
Snape because he takes such painstaking pride in his work, he lives and breathes it, and I have to respect that. Plus he's so intense and moody, which is something I can often come across as being. Even the way he acts in the classroom, although it's terrible and I would never pick on my students the way he does, I'm an artist and I've done classes on schools and have felt the same irritation and occasionally fury that people won't listen and take things seriously.
My social skills can occasionally desert me and I'll say something that sounds unpleasant and narky - though I normally don't mean it. I also think Snape has a point when he's angry that Harry doesn't seem to be working as hard at beating Voldemort as he should - personally I don't get why Dumbledore didn't see fit to train him from a young age, what with the prophect and all, but that's a whole other topic.
I also suspect that deep, deep down Snape has a pretty dry and sarcastic sense of humour, and I'm always laughing at things that other people don't find funny. I also stalk around giving people looks of death when I'm in a bad mood, but I don't think I manage to be so intimidating. - What would you see if you looked into the Mirror of Erised? Myself with a successful career - I'd love to so concept art for films and illustrate children's books. I'd also like to be a writer, but for some reason I'm not too good at writing children's stories, mine are always adult - grim and gritty with swearing and violence. So I suppose I'd be in a library filled with my successful books, and artwork. I'd be in a lovely house in a beautiful warm place, somewhere calm and relaxing where the pace of life is slower and more laid back. I would also have a pug, along with my two cats, and an attractive funny partner. And through the window, I'd have a really lush car parked in the drive and be able to see the sea.
- If you won a million dollars, how would you spend it? Kinda like in the mirror - sell my house and move somewhere warm, buy a snazzy car and give art and writing a real go without having to worry about paying the mortgage. I'd also pay for the road trip I have planned with my friend for some distant future when we have the funds - going around America and staying in the most bizarre hotels we can find. I'd also go to Norway, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico. I'd go whale watching and see the northern lights.
- What was your ideal job as a kid? Has that changed? What is your ideal job now? As a little kid I wanted to be a Palaeontologist (it's not as bad as my brother, he wanted to be a Nuclear Physicist - he used to read my chemistry and physics books all the time). I loved fossil hunting, I've actually got a really cool fossil of Lepidotus (bit dino-ish fish - not too sure myself) teeth on my windowsill that my mother managed to find on a hunt in the Isle of White. I really wanted to go on digs in the Gobi desert and unearth raptors.
Then, as a young teenager I wanted to be a Marine Biologist, I actually chose French in school because I was so serious about moving to Canada and working with Orca whales. I now desperately wish I'd taken Welsh. Or Welsh AND French, though I hated my French teacher (now THAT was a Harry-Snape teaching relationship), it has come in handy all the times I've been to France.
Anyway, as I got older I decided I wanted to be an animator, and did a year of that in university, before switching to illustration. Now if I can just get a few more jobs, I'll be happy. Hm... you know, reviewing that, I think I grew up a little bit backwards. - If you were able to invent one spell, potion, or charm, what would it do, what would you use it for or how would you use it, and what would you call it? Going back to the technomancy thing, I'd invent little surveillance drones, cloaked with the same material as the invisibility cloak that I could use to go around and spy on people. I suppose it would be like Big Brother (1984, not the 'reality' TV program) except I would have the control and know what everyone was getting up to. Knowledge is power after all, and I bet I could get some awesome blackmail material.
- If you were to face a boggart, what would it turn into? And what does it turn into when you throw the counter-spell, Riddikulus? My family dead and me insane. I'm not really sure how you could make that funny, um, I have no idea.
- What do you look for in a friend? Loyalty because I'm quite a shy and private person - it's takes ages for me to trust somebody and really let my guard down, so I have to know that that person will be loyal. Also a good sense of humour, I love it when your friends are on the same wave length and just by making a dry comment they can have me in hysterics.
- What trait most annoys you about other people? Moaning. Everyone complains sometimes, but there's nothing worse than making time to catch up with someone and all they do is moan from the time you meet them from the time they say goodbye. Some people can moan in a funny way, make the most tragic circumstances to be a bizarre little comedy but people with a whiney voice and a downer on everything really do my nut in.
- What do you think are your top five abilities or qualities?
Fun-loving - I love to have a laugh and a joke about with my friends, and do things like dancing and going surfing.
Ambition - I'm always striving to improve my work and applying for jobs where I can work up the ranks. Plus I owned my own business for six months.
Tenacity - I keep on trying and don't let failure hold me back
Creativity - Kind of comes with the artist territory, though these days I rarely follow my ideas through - I only produce sketches when I need to get back to painting.
Relaxed - I take most things in my stride and let them wash over me without worrying too much - What do you think are your top five weaknesses or worst qualities?
Procrastination - like needing to get my website done, wanting to finish my fanfic and that half-painted portrait of my nephew thats been untouched for months.
Being lazy - I spend an indecent amount of time lying around in my pajamas watching films of reading
Occasionally revert to being a hermit - I'll sometimes go days without leaving the house or seeing everybody. I've even been known to sit in my room with my earplugs in to completely shut myself off.
Brooding - I let myself get angry at things that don't really matter and can spend days brooding about it.
Moody - Kind of in with the brooding. I occasionally have mood swings even I can't keep up with. - Define in your own words the following key traits:
- Courage: Facing something even though it frightens you.
- Loyalty: Standing by someone, even when you are not 100% sure you believe or agree with them, but offering your support.
- Intelligence: Being not just book smart but having common sense and the ability to think your way out of a problem. Apparently it's been proven that there are nine types of intelligence, ranging from good common sense to Stephen Hawkings.
- Ambition: Wanting to progress and succeed, and striving to do so.
- Courage: Facing something even though it frightens you.
