About

This interactive community has been constructed to keep friends and fans of Plankton Art Company better informed about our recent work, projects and appearances.

Originally studying to become marine biologists, Allen and Susan Crawford launched Plankton Art Company in 1999 to broaden the scope of their work, which has included painting, illustration, graphic design, typeface design, assemblage, collage, animation and video/performance projects.

They have cultivated a large roster of clients for their design, illustration and animation. Plankton's clients include Newsweek, E!, National Geographic, Hasbro, The Lincoln Center Theater Review, Giro/Bell Helmets, Chronicle Books, Hersheys, Warner Bros., The Smithsonian Zoo, Comedy Central, Crayola, Target, Random House, Disney, Ride Snowboards, Le Grand Magistery, Mambo and the band Phish.

Allen and Susan’s biggest project to date is the completion of an eight-month, 400-illustration ocean life identification key project for the American Museum of Natural History’s Milstein Hall of Ocean Life--"The Blue Whale Room"--which reopened in May 2003 after being closed to the public for over two years for much-needed renovations. The exhibit is permanent and will remain in place for the next thirty years.

Plankton has received numerous art, design and illustration accolades and their work has been featured in several books and magazines. In 1996, Allen's [T-26] typeface Apogee was included in the "Mixing Messages: Graphic Design in Contemporary Culture" exhibit at The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York. They have sat on panels at conferences and have served as judges for illustration competitions.

Susan and Allen have exhibited and sold their paintings and prints all over the US and abroad, and are currently scheduling several gallery shows for the coming year.

Allen’s self-published book, The Affected Provincial’s Almanack, has been picked up by Bloomsbury and will be released worldwide in 2006. Talk about a movie adaptation of his book is also in the works.

Allen occasionally teaches design at his alma mater, Richard Stockton College and is having his first book published this year, entitled The Affected Provincial's Almanack, Vol. 1. Susan and Allen have a background in biology and conservation, and have gone on several dive excursions in Central America, South Africa and Australia, including a cage dive with Great White Sharks. Both Planktons volunteer thier time conducting reptile and amphibian field surveys for the NJ Dept of Fish and Game. They have the softest skin in the business.
