Appliance recycling program starts
Wednesday, February 28, 2007
Starting this week and continuing through the summer, Appliance Warehouse on the South Side will take old, broken or unwanted air conditioners, refrigerators, washers, dryers and other major appliances for recycling in a partnership with the Pennsylvania Resources Council.
Certified technicians will dispose of chemical byproducts and the South Side store will sell the remains to scrap dealers, said Fred Landay, owner of Appliance Warehouse, at 523 Bingham St.
Proceeds will benefit the council's campaign to clean up litter and graffiti.
The store will pick up appliances by appointment, offering a 10 percent discount if you say "Don't be a litterbug." Otherwise, the curb pickup fee is $42.75 and $62 if the item has to be removed from the house.
The recycling service is free to anyone who hauls their own recyclable items to the dropoff site.
For more information or to schedule a pickup, call 1-888-GO-FREON or visit www.appliancedisposal.org or www.prc.org for details.

I'd like to also point out that Goodwill's computer center on the South Side will accept old and broken computers and parts. What they can't use they dispose of properly.
