No escape in this direction ....
I had hoped to waste some time in Second Life this evening as a distraction to keep me away from my other "behavioral addictions."

    Login failed.

    Doggy tales
Logan can't find his "stash" (the box of papers he was raiding to find new playthings, which I finally did manage to locate and put out of his reach), and he's unhappy about it. Poor baby.

Also, given that Logan and Madison can't read the labels on their food dishes, I wonder why each one so reliably eats out of the other one's dish, no matter how I arrange them!

Reflections upon finally seeing "Dark Knight"
I had already read several detailed descriptions of the "Dark Knight" movie before I actually got to see it, so I wasn't surprised by any of the plot twists; I was more interested in seeing how the filmmakers accomplished certain things. I certainly didn't see it as a statement in favor of covert surveillance of the entire population to combat terrorism, as some have claimed. I didn't see the Joker as a metaphor for any kind of political terrorist, or standing for anyone with a long-term agenda other than creating chaos for its own sake.

The point that I did see being made is that people act upon what they believe. If they believe that good is possible in the world, they act accordingly, which makes it true. If they believe that nothing matters, and that good is impossible, then they act according to that principle. In other words, the story matters, the "myths," the core values, the things that people believe - and what people believe creates a new truth, based upon the actions that they take in reliance upon that belief, even if the things that they believe are not factually correct.

A good myth matters, and people need to believe in heroes. A good story matters, even if the details aren't right. The inspiration has its own value.

    Peace versus giving up
Sometimes it's tough to tell the difference between getting a sense of simple peace and simply giving up. Because I'm not willing to give up, not willing to say that it doesn't matter, I'm often afraid of the feeling of peace, as if that were the same thing as indifference.

When prayer and meditation lead me toward those feelings of serenity, acceptance, and blessing, that doesn't necessarily have to mean that I'm abandoning anyone, or that I'm giving up the fight for anything that matters to me.

I'm not at the "I don't give a ..... " place, and I don't want to be there, either. I am not willing to stop caring. But there has to be a reason why my attempts at prayer and meditation keep leading me back to the principle of letting go. I keep fighting against that, because it feels like abandonment.

It's easy to confuse peace with betrayal. I need to remember the fact that they aren't the same thing, and one does not necessarily require the other. I can reach peace about what is, what was, and what will be, without changing my mind or turning my back on any of the people and the principles I value, and without giving up on anyone, even myself.

    Advice
    See this post.

    Dear Old,

I have this really embarrassing problem. See, I saw this picture of my friend when he was 15, and well, I thought he was pretty much a hottie. I feel that it's obviously very wrong of me to find a 15 year old hot, even if he is no longer 15. But now, I find myself daydreaming of this friend, but as if he were still 15 years old. I can't help myself. When I'm in the car, the shower, eating dinner, I sigh wistfully and wonder when the time machine will be invented, because I just know that we would hit it off so well. I find it hard to go about my day-to-day life, because I just cannot get this image out of my mind! What's a girl to do?

    Signed,
    Idealistic in Indiana.

    Dear III,

Because, like all love, this will never be fulfilled, there is very little that you can do, apart from drinking heavily and praying that your death will link you two forever.

Or, you could just move one, because 15 year old boys are kind of gross...and...yeah.

    Thanks, and keep writing,

    Old

A couple of things for the morning . . .
    1. Special Olympics has responded very quickly to the comedy "Tropic Thunder," which apparently used the word "retarded" like most movies use the word "fuck."

I have always fought against this word in the classroom, just as I fight against "gay," "ghetto" and similar words. I know some people say that's being too sensitive, but that works for me.

I don't know that it merits being referred to as "the r-word," but that's how Special Olympics is approaching it. It also looks to me as though the group is using a woman of color in the ad. You will notice, she's not a cute, little six-year-old with pigtails.

    Anyway . . .

    r-word.org

    2. In a related vein, [info]etherial posted something in my comments last night. I promise I will not keep hitting you over the head with my Polar Plunge (I will wait until November.) But after I commented that I was at $300 after three days, he said if I raise another $200 by Friday, he'll kick in *another* $100. Here's the link. I am also looking for team members. I can provide crash space if you want to come up.

    Thanks!

    Wearable flexi-rosary

    Click-and-pray

I can't get the rosary I bought separately to work with this "rosary - female sitting" animation, but I like the idea. I was in a mood to pray today but was having trouble finding the words. Sometimes "click-and- pray," as silly as it sounds, can actually help. So, here's a prayer for all my friends.

    hints from a domestically-challenged girlie
I just sent off an e-mail detailing this week's progress to my committee, and now I'm officially taking a few days off from work in order to have some summer. Yay! It seems that I've learned a few helpful lessons on the home/domestic front this summer firsthand. Since I have a little time now, I thought I'd share my newly acquired knowledge with you.

    1. St. Ives' Gentle Apricot Cleanser is an excellent (and economical) substitute for Dermalogica's designer Ultracalming Cleanser. My face has never been clearer and softer.
    2. Deep dish spring form pans are not necessarily liquid-tight. Eggs leaking all over counter while assembling pasta carbonara != fun.
    3. Gap's ankle-length jeans have the same inseam as Banana Republic's regular length jean, which is curious becase the companies are affiliated. Vertically-challenged peeps represent!
    4. Target's line of vitamins are ridiculously cheaper than their name brand competitors, without any appreciable differences that I've noticed.
    5. Vidalia onions are amazing. ZOMG roasted in balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

    That is all.

Tuesday evening: Cleaning, cooking and writing . . .
    1. Is there a CD equivalent for LibraryThing?

    2. Had to come home from work today. All the tension in my life settled in the lower-left hand corner of my back. A heavy dose of Advil, a nice back rub from [info]alethea_eastrid and a nap helped alleviate it. Part of it was that I was facing a whole day at my desk in the office. Tomorrow, I have errands to run, then I am at the Washington County Fair helping run our Guitar Hero competition.

    3. Think good thoughts my way. I mailed three teaching resumes yesterday. (Actually A. mailed them). I also have four applications out from a week ago Sunday and a variety of others floating around.

    4. The good news is that I have picked up several free-lance gigs, including three stories (with summary box and roster) for the local paper's football preview tab. I am also talking with a weekly newspaper publisher who is going to put out a winter guide for a local tourist destination area. My first story idea is a local brewery. I have one commission for an obituary (see previous post), and I am doing another one as a thank you for a donation for the Passion Plunge.

    5. Speaking of the Polar Plunge (no, I won't plug it every day), three days in, I have $300. That's pretty darned cool. At that pace -- and no, I don't expect to keep that pace -- I would more than double my $5,000 goal. It's 106 days until I plunge. I think I am the only person on the site with donations already.

    6. I am cooking. I made a casserole of rice and the coconut milk/garlic/peanut satay chicken I made in the crockpot the other night. I am also going to fry up some fresh onions, peppers and potatoes. Anyone got good squash/zucchini recipes?

    7. I have been meaning to link to this youth baseball story.

I would be interested in comments both from sports fans and non-sports fans.

    An excerpt:

    Associated Press

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.  — One inning at a time, Brady Kemp is getting closer to his dream of playing for the Atlanta Braves. He has endured numbing road trips to no-name ballparks and crashed in small-town motels after late games.

A seasoned veteran, Brady is 8. He's been playing ball since he was 3.

Once mainly for middle- and high-schoolers, traveling baseball teams are luring younger and younger players. Teams rove the nation like big-leaguers so kids still learning to read can play the best competition in the nicest parks for the biggest trophies.

It's August: Is the tournament this weekend in Cooperstown, N.Y., or Orlando, Fla.?

The trend troubles some parents and coaches. They worry about spending thousands annually so youngsters can play in baseball tournaments run by national organizations pulling in millions of dollars. One nonprofit's CEO took in $400,000 in a year.

    So Tomorrow
I have 4 vacation days that I need to use before the end of the year, so I decided to take one tomorrow. I plan on getting most of the rest of my unpacking and organizing done, as there is still a good deal of that to do. After work tonight, I am going to get my papizan chair, two book cases, and desk. I'm either going to go to Walmart tonight to get the 2 rugs that I want for my living room, or wait until tomorrow. I also think that, instead of buying an $11 tension rod that may not work, that I am going to pick up another one of those standalone wardrobe things for $20, as my last one broke and, I think could be missing a rod.
Sally, I will either bring by the hammock later tonight or sometime tomorrow.
Laura- I know you had mentioned possibly being free Wednesday. If you are let me know if you (and Ra if she isn't working) can/want to come down. And if you do you'll need to stop at SoHo before you leave to get pizza for your dad!

Thats it for now. I just want my apartment to look like an apartment!

Monday night: Words from the home office in Salem . . .
    1. Welcome to [info]mairegirl, [info]nauraki and [info]zsof.

If you are counting, that is three Midrealmers, but that's OK. Maire and Brighid are two of the coolest fencers anywhere, and Maire is the brains behind John Inchingham. Zsof? She brought me a case of beer to Pennsic -- all beers I cannot get here. I need ot do a count. There are a *lot* of Midrealmers here. (I am kidding. Some of my best friends . . . )

    2. A line from a New York Times story on how Britain is doing well in these Olympics (12 golds) and hopes to be fourth in the medal count in 2012:

Organizers must already be wondering how to follow Beijing’s cast-of-thousands opening ceremony; re-forming the Beatles is not an option.

Great line, but I was thinking that if they used the same digital manipulation the Chinese used  . . .

    3. The Washington County Fair opened its week-long run today. I will be there a dozen or so hours for work, and I was there tonight for opening night. Huge county fair. Tonight was a demo derby. I brought a roasted chicken dinner, maple cotton candy and kettle corn home to alethea_eastrid.

    4. Speaking of Alethea, she said the following in a telephone conversation tonight:

"The magical tentacles of the Liam. How did I live without them?"

No, you are not getting context.

    5. Separate conversation:

Liam: "Do you know where the other 12-pack of seltzer is?"

Alethea: "You put it away in the closet."

No wonder I couldn't find it.

    6. Speaking of my tentacles:

    "Ewwww."

I am working on getting a hotel/motel block for Crown. I will keep you posted.

    7. Speaking of John Inchingham:

    "Ewwww."

That's actually one of his lines.

I highly recommend his newest CD -- "John Inchingham versus The Bardic Hydra," which  includes songs about a hydra (no shit), vampiric penguins, a pretty pink pegasus, a  were-llama and a Great Dane named . . .  wait for it . . . Hamlet.  It also includes a song about one of the biggest fighters I have ever seen -- Sabah from the Midlands -- with the lines, "I am the masher, my foes are potatoes" and "can't parry a tsunami."

It's also really good, because it includes Mater Cerian (Mr. Death, Doom and Gloom himself," Alexander de Seton, Dahrien Cordell and Lorelei Skye.

Excellent lunch at the Saugerties Lighthouse yesterday.  So Beautiful!

Jess and I walked out there to eat and talk, and she said she felt like she was on a tropical island somewhere, not in the middle of the Hudson.  She spoke my mind.

She showed me how to drive her motorcycle!  I had no idea the controls were so different from a car's controls.  The clutch looks like a hand brake!  Ack!  The front brake looked like a bicycle brake, but the rear brake was operated by the right foot!  Must take some getting used to.

    Zomg famous people
So we went to Saratoga on Saturday with Trysten's family. I brushed shoulders with Bobby Flay - it took me a minute to realize why I recognized him. Zomg famous people! By the time we pointed him out to Trysten's sister (a mega Food network fan) he was down the street.

Saratoga was pretty and we avoided the rain. I picked up a dark navy/purple hip scarf with gold coins for my belly dancing, which makes me happy. It was 30$ and worth every cent as it has a ton of coins and makes a good sound - which is a sign of good quality, or so my teacher tells me. We swung by Round Lake's arts and crafts festival, which was small but pleasant, and again avoided the rain. Got kettle corn, yumyum!

Sunday we went to the Altamont Fair. We saw piggies racing! They were adorable, their reward is oreo cookies. They run really fast. We also say the demo derby, which was awesome. It was amazing what a beating those cars took and kept going! There were a few fires, and one crash actually knocked down the concrete barrier. We wandered, saw lots of farm animals and rides and what not. They had an old car display that was amazing - totally rebuilt from framework '20s and '30s cars and some nice '60s ones. It was sweet. They also had old steam powered farm equipment running on display. And we tried fried oreos....not really worth the money. Too doughy. If I wanted dough I'd get a funnel cake. I'll stick to regular oreos thankyouverymuch.

I think I may pick up a new Nikon lens after my promotion, as I want to get some nice pictures to decorate the place with more - we just put up some neat ones from our trip and the tulip festival. And I can't bring myself to buy photographs at festivals when I just think "I could take that, if I went to XYZ place."

Soon I will take 2 bellydancing classes a week, ideally. I am hoping to pick up a Tuesday class taught by my same teacher at a different location. If I can't manage to grab two classes then I make pick up a Yoga or a Tai Chi class - the fall classes for Adult Ed (ie dance and financing and art and fun stuff) through all the school districts are starting up and there is plenty to do.

I also realized that if I wanted to, I could pay off my car loan right now and be entirely debt free, and still have several thousand dollars left over. That's a nice thought, though it would be silly to do. But its good to know I could, if I needed to. Especially in a country so riddled with debt up to its eyeballs.
