| About: | I no longer have the free time or desire to moderate this community. I wont be enforcing the rules anymore! I wont be held responsible for what happens. Sorry Folks ~Meg DISCLAIMER: This FAQ is for informational purposes only. Many of us are not professionals and are only offering our personal advice. If you have a real problem please go back and see your piercer or a doctor (who may or may not have experience with piercings). We will not be held responsible for the outcome of any advice posted here. Thanks. This commnunity has been running well for sometime now with lots of great advice being offered out. However the regular advice people are finding that many users post the same questions over and over again without looking through previous posts to see if their question has already been answered. In an effort to reduce redundancy we have created a FAQ for you to read before posting your questions. Basics: To start off I'm going to post some of the most common information sort of as a quick reference. Often these things are what cause piercing problems. Rule #1 - your piercing is an open wound. Treat it as one! Rule #2 - never ever touch or play with your piercing until it's healed. Only touch your piercing when you are cleaning it. Consider everything covered with bacteria. If you touch a pen your hands are now covered in germs. Do not transfer those germs to your new piercing by playing with it. Rule #3 - Salt water is the cheapest and easiest way to clean any piercing. Dilute sea salts or (non-iodized) table salt in warm water so that it tastes like tears. Soak the piercing in this mixture to remove any crusties. Do not pick them off! Allergies Nickel: Even if you are only mildy allergic to nickel you want avoid even the highest greade stainless steel jewelry. Stick with Titanium, Niobium or Acrylic. Pollen/Hay Fever: If you have seasonal allergies to do use "natural" shampoos and body washes (such as Herbal Essenses). They are loaded with pollen and will irritate your piercing. Even if you normally don't have a problem with these products your piercing (ie your open wound) is going to be more sensitive to these products. Tide : If you have somewhat sensitive skin, or know that you are allergic to strong laundry detergents such as tide do not use this to wash your clothes, particularly if you have nipple and/or navel piercings. If you are unsure, run your washer with no soap to rinse the inside and then wash some shirts/bras in a natural detergent (or something lighter such as sunlight), or just hot water and see how if your piercings start to heal up a bit better. Pets, Dust, other things. If you have any allergies to ANYTHING your piercing will react much more strongly then your regular skin. You have exposed new "unprotected flesh" to these things which may be causing a problem. Even if your first nipple piercing healed fine, any factors that changed in your life before getting the second one could react to these sorts of things. (Ie you had no dog before but now you do and your piercing is angry, are you mildly allergic to dogs?) Q: Can anyone tell me how much X piercing costs? A: We can probably give you a rough idea, or tell you how much we paid, however each studio will have it's own price guide. Call or visit your local piercer to get an exact price. Q: Will it hurt? A: Probably, at least a little bit. Everyone's pain threshold is different and no one can tell you for sure if it hurts except you. Q: How do I convince my parents to let me get pierced? A: You can direct them to the BMEZINE parents FAQ (http://www.bmezine.com/par-faq.html) for starters. You can show them that you are responsible and understand what you are getting into and have done research. You can make a deal with them (good grades?) or you can just wait. We are not going to promise you anything as your parents will have their own sets of rules. If you really can't convince them wait until you are 18 and then do whatever you want. Q: Since my parents won't let me get pierced should I let my friend do it? A: Unless your friend is a professional piercer and doesn't mind the potential legal risk if you are a minor, I would say NO. Just wait until you are of age and then go and get the piercing professionally done. Q: Is it safe to be pierced with a gun? A: A piercing gun, traditionally used by mall-stores for piercing ears, is typically inappropriate for piercing of any kind, especially body piercing. Almost all medical professionals agree that piercing guns can not be adequately sterilized (an alcohol wipe is NOT sterilization); which means that in theory they are capable of passing hepatitis and other diseases. In addition, experience has taught the industry that: Ear piercing studs are dull and tear through the body causing unnecessary scarring, pain, and other complications. Ear piercing guns are inaccurate and not designed for piercing most body parts resulting in improper piercing placement. Ear piercing studs are the wrong size and too short for most piercings resulting in swelling, rejection, infection, and many other problems. Any "piercer" using a piercing gun should be avoided. (From bmezine.com) Q: My piercing looks fine but there is some stuff oozing out of it. Is it infected? A: Unless your piercing is oozing green it's normal. The substance coming out of your new hole is called "lymph" and is a mixture of dead skin cells and lymphatic fluid. Your piercing is just draining itself and will stop eventually. If your piercing doesn't stop for a very very long time go talk to your piercer about any possible problems or allergies that may be causing it. Q: I need more information on surface piercings, can someone help me? A: Shannon Laratt (of BMEZINE.COM) wrote a wonderful article on surface piercing. You can view it here - http://www.bmezine.com/pierce/11-surface/wantone.html Q: What should I clean my piercing with? A: As stated at the beginning of this document salt water is the easiest and cheapest way to clean a piercing. Depending on your skins sensitivity you can also you unscented anti-bacterial soap or spectrogel (non soap) face cleanser. Do not use peroxide (unless you have an infection and have been instructed on how to dilute it properly by your piercer) or any products that contain alcohol. Do not use creams or ointments as these can trap bacteria. 4 out of 5 people have no problem with tea tree oil products. Unless you are sure you will not have a reaction avoid this as well. Q: What should I clean my oral piercings with? A: Gargling with salt water is, again, the easiest and best way. Commercial products such as biotene, oral b alcohol free mouth wash and colgate peroxil are acceptable. Listerine, cepacol and other alcohol full products are a bad idea. Q: How often should I clean my piercing? A: Try not to clean more than twice a day. For Oral piercings you should rinse your mouth wiht at least some bottled/distilled water after you put anything in your mouth other than water. Try to combine your activities so that you don't rinse too often (know you are going to smoke about 10 minutes after lunch? Don't rinse immediately after eating, just wait until you've smoked and then rinse once) Q: I think my piercing is infected, what should I do? A: First off DO NOT TAKE IT OUT. As this is the internet we cannot see your piercing to even make sure that it is infected. Your best bet is to go see your piercer (or a doctor if your piercer is too far) If you are positive that your piercing is infected just just salt water soaks on it twice a day to try and suck out the infection. If it doesn't go away read the allergies list at the top of this document to see if you fall into any of those categories. Always remember that piercers are there to help you and if you are unsure ask THEM! Q: Will nipple piercings mess up breast feeding? A: No. There are a few situations where you might experience some problems (if your piercing was ripped out and now you have a lot of scar tissue build up in your nipple, etc.)On the whole however you should not have any trouble breast feeding having gotten your nipples pierced. Q: Can I swim in a chlorinated pool after getting pierced? A: This is a bad idea. Chlorine is a very harsh chemical and will definitely irritate a new piercing. Also pools are generally creeping with bacteria (hence the chlorine) which could potentially enter and irritate your piercing. Q: Where can I buy body jewelry? A: Your piercing studio is a good place to start. There are also many online stores that sell body jewelry of varying quality. Scroll through older entries to see where people say they bought jewelry from and what their experience with those places were. Also try a google search on body jewelry and see what comes up. Reputable companies (that I know of) are shop.bmezine.com, Custom Steel and Industrial Strength. Q: I have a red bulb thing on my piercing, what is it? How can I make it go away? A: This is probably a keloid, nothing to be too worried about. Try salt water soaks for a while and if nothing changes go talk to your piercer. Q: I just swallowed my tongue/lip/etc piercing. Is this dangerous??? A: If you just swallowed a bead it will probably pass through you no problem. Posts and rings are a bit more dangerous as they have edges that can poke and catch but I have never heard of anyone having severe problems from swallowing jewelry. If you are experiencing strange pain GO SEE A DOCTOR! Q: How can i Stretch my ears? A: Stretching is usually done when a piercing inserts a taper into your ear and then inserts some larger jewelry than you previously had. You repeat this process a few times until you acheive the size that you want. If you want to go really big scalpelling is also an option. Q: How soon can I start eating after getting my tongue/lip pierced? A: You should be able to eat right away, but just take it slowly. Avoid hot and spicy foods and drink lots of cold water to keep the swelling down. I highly recommend avoiding spaghetti and similar noodles with a new tongue barbell and it hurts like hell when those things get wrapped around! Q: I need to hide my piercing from my parents/job, what should I do? A: You can get an acrylic retainer. Most piercing shops carry them as do most online stores. This won't hide your piercing entirely but will make it a bit more subtle. These retainers often come in various "flesh tones" and clear. Q: What should I expect when I get pierced? A: COPIED FROM THE BMEZIE PARENT FAQ - 1. You enter the studio and see that it's a clean and friendly place. 2. You tell the person at the counter what piercing you want, and they answer any questions you might have about it. 3. You show them ID, and fill out a consent form, which should contain general questions about your health that are relevant to the piercing procedure. 4. You pay either before or after, depending on the studio. You may have to wait for your appointment depending on how busy the studio is that day (piercing is usually done on a walk-in basis). 5. You'll enter the piercing room (which should be a separate private room), and sit down either at a chair or on a bench. 6. The piercer will explain the procedure to you (perhaps as they're doing it). 7. They will have their tools, needles, and some cleaning supplies on a tray and will open these in front of you. You'll see that they're handled carefully and that nothing "dirty" is touched to contaminate them. 8. Assuming you didn't already choose the specific size and style of jewelry already, that will be done now. 9. The piercer will clean your skin around the piercing location, and then mark where they think it should go. They'll show you and make sure you're happy with the placement. 10. Depending on the piercing (and the piercer's style), they may put a clamp over the piercing marks to help them. 10. The piercer will put a little lube on the piercing needle, and then quickly pass the needle through the piercing. This only takes an instant, and shouldn't hurt terribly. 11. The piercer will then hold the jewelry up to the back of the needle, and simultaneously remove the needle and insert the jewelry in one smooth motion. 12. If a clamp is being used, it may be removed either before or after the jewelry is followed through, depending on the piercing and the piercer's style. 13. The piercer will clean the piercing if needed, and assuming the client is ready, everything is done. 14. Aftercare will be explained, and an aftercare sheet to take home is given. The above will of course vary from piercing to piercing, but most of those steps will stay consistent. Q: How should I choose a piercing studio? A: Go to the shop and look around to see if it looks and smells clean. Are the staff friendly? Are you comfortable there (aside from pre piercing jitters)? Are the counter surfaces clean? Are there private rooms for piercing? Can they confidently answer all of your questions? Are the jewelry, tools, needles and other appliances autoclaved and sealed? Do they dispose of each needle after 1 use in a biohazard container? If the studio you have found meets all of the above requirements (some cities/states-provinces/countries require a health inspection and this will also be posted) chances are it's not all bad. Trust your instincts. If the places looks sketchy find somewhere else. Q: How can I become a piercer/how can I get an apprenticeship? A: To become a piercer you usually need to be taught by someone. Generally piercers will take on an apprentice (sometimes paid, sometime unpaid, sometimes you have to pay them so they know you aren't wasting their time) and you will do some grunt work while learning the basics. Your piercer/teacher will probably have you watch them as they do some piercings and ask you questions during the procedure. After time you will start doing your own piercings under supervision. It all goes from there. To get an apprenticeship you could scan the paper, internet, etc for ads. You can find a studio you like, become a regular and be friendly and ask the head piercer/owner/manager/wherever if they would consider taking on an apprentice. There are also a few courses out there but these do not make you a piercer. Most of these courses can be considered and introduction to the basics. Good luck. Q: How can I get rid of my keloids? A: Keloids are usually caused by pressure so removing the presure and salt water soaks are a good start, talking to your piercer is another good option. Q: I got pierced yesterday and its sore, is that bad? A: Its no surprise that its sore the next day, you basically have a wound, and wounds tend to be sore, stick to your aftercare and read above. Q: Where can I get a job if I have piercings?
