And while I’m at it…

For all my white friends who aren’t “accustomed” to dealing with me as a black person: do you know why something hip-hop or R&B comes on right after any hard-core classical music I listen to in iTunes?  Because I can see you becoming visibly uncomfortable when it happens.  That’s good for a cheap laugh.

Some of you may even remember how I used to sit in the music school building blasting Prince and Laurie Anderson on my ghetto blaster in the hallways between classes.  Good times…

Time:2:31 pm.
Mood: frustrated.
Music:Riley: Salome Dances for Peace — Kronos Quartet.

Easing on down that same path, we are.

I really don’t think it merits the continued public argument, but anyway…

We started with this sometime last year:

And last week came this:

The Whoopi passage that always stands out in my mind is this:

Because really, it’s the intent, isn’t it. It’s never the word. Like the “N Word”. That’s what we’ve got to call it now. The “N Word”. And everyone says “Don’t say it again. We should put a moratorium on it, because it’s a bad word. It’s a word that raises all kinds of connotations to people.” And it’s mad! But see it’s not bad to me, because I don’t know any, and I’ve never been one. So when I hear somebody say it, I don’t turn around! Because I know they’re not talking to me.  [Emphasis added.]

But apparently other people don’t feel like that. Apparently other people feel like it’s a very bad word. But is it the word? Because just because you don’t say it, doesn’t mean you’re not thinking it, you see. And you can’t stop anybody from thinking it. So what is it that really upsets us? It’s not the word, it’s the intent of the word, all the things it’s supposed to mean. Like the word “stupid”. So to me, it’s kinda the same. Though I can say “stupid” endlessly, and nobody is shocked. But if I say “The N Word”, everybody gonna get mad.

And you know, white folks, I’m talking specifically now to y’all. Because the problem with white folks is you hear the word, and you say to black people, “Well you all say it, why can’t we say it?” Now here’s your first problem. You ask permission to say a word you already are not comfortable with. And then you’re surprised when somebody pops you in the eyeball. Come on. What did you think was going to happen? See, in the olden days, nobody asked for permission, they just said it. And when you ask permission, you want permission to say something to me that you don’t think is right. Why would I give that to you? And as you see, people get in a lot of trouble. People lose their minds, and go “rr rr rr rr rr.”

To look only at the latter incident without considering the former is how so many people miss the point, I believe.  So many people interpreted the incident last Thursday (which I did not see live because I’m generally in transit or otherwise occupied during most of The View, on the rare occasions that I deign to watch it) as Whoopi being just one more black person saying “We can say it and you can’t,” which isn’t the point at all; if I may re-reference, it’s like the word “stupid” in that it’s not the word itself, it’s the intent with which the word is spoken (“You can’t say ‘stupid’ with a smile on your face”).  I am fully adherent to the principle, made concrete by the judicial system with regard to the difference between murder and manslaughter, that intent is the most difficult thing in the world to prove.

The first time I heard the phrase I must have been eighteen or nineteen years old, so it was well before Chris Rock had taken it and trotted it out nationally in 1996 and the even earlier Ice Cube reference that Rock took it from, and, ironically if you will (in hindsight), it was a white guy who said it.

I found Skip attractive, and that may have been part of my motivation to give him the benefit of the doubt; besides, it seemed like a reasonable argument.  A few years later, Skip was, for whatever reason, willing to take a minor stand against one of the more obnoxious elitist queens in town in a straight-up in-your-face public dis, refusing to come to a “posh” after-hours party for all the pretty white boys in town as long as I wasn’t invited, which made it even more rational for me to have given Skip a pass on the whole argument.  As long as I was one of the good black people, I didn’t really have anything to complain about, right?  If someone was flinging that word around, I could be assured they weren’t talking about me.

The thing is, that argument of intent keeps creeping in to the train of thought.  The notion that just because someone isn’t saying the word doesn’t mean that the word isn’t somewhere in the room.  A level of tacit realization always exists that I and others like me might, as “good” black people, might simply be a conduit through which not-quite-fully-“enlightened” people might justify, nurture, and perpetuate racist notions.  That old the-exception-proves-the-rule chestnut.

I might be inclined to feel guilty about giving Skip a pass on the whole racial stratification thing were it not for the colorist or field vs. house disputes that have been going on among blacks since the plantation days.  Since I’m viewed with disdain by those black people who think of me as “assimilated,” I don’t always feel obliged to empathize when that word starts flying around again, as it inevitably does.

As for the poor, tearful Ms. Hasselbeck, as well-intentioned as she is in her desire to eliminate that word from The American Lexicon, surely she must be intelligent enough to realize that even if we get rid of the word itself, people will surely find other words to express the same intent, and that the specific intent can never be eliminated.

Even with all that said, I prefer to think that many people are smart enough to think beyond word to context and gauge their word choices accordingly.

I wonder what the pay scale for poststructuralist semanticists is like…

I thought I missed the internet after not using it for a couple weeks, but after using it to look up some addresses it turns out that I was not missing it all that much.
I just wanted to make a post to say I am so over Austin. the problem is Austin thinks it is so fucking cool yet the only good thing Austin has going for it is the super cheap mexican food and a shit ton of live music, but I am too fat and I haven't gone to see a band since.. I don't even know when. I really could write a report or it seems like I have been working on one in my head on reasons why Eugene is better than Austin. if you want me to I will.

Up until now I have been working really hard up here and haven't taken very many photos, but now I have some free time so I should start carrying around a camera again. I do have a few rolls to drop off when I manage to see a cheap photo lab.

I am tan and/or peeling from being outside all day for the past couple weeks.
I've been swimming in waters colder than B.Springs, but it actually feels more tolerable here
I took a hammock camping and slept in that instead of a tent (highly recommended)
learned to drive stick finally, but I still suck

Subject:Poor Nanook/my back
Time:6:23 pm.
Since I haven't been as active as usual the past few weeks, and since I have been sitting a lot in my home office desk chair, I've been having a lot of low back problems. Pilates took care of it this morning, but it's back this afternoon. I found a lumbar support I used to use and put it on my chair again.

I moved Nanook's food bowl to the kitchen because of the ants--at least this way I can see them coming. The advantage of linoleum over carpet. But Nanook is Not Happy that I moved his food. He knows it's in the kitchen, he just doesn't like it and prefers not to eat from his food there. This morning he took me to the place where his food bowl used to be in the living room, and pretty much pointed to the spot and said, "Well? Where is it?" I carried him to the food bowl in the kitchen, and he just gave me a disgusted look and walked away.

I didn't think Nanook would be so difficult about this; he's usually pretty adaptable.

I had a long conversation with my dentist yesterday about negotiating with animals. He actually went on and on about it while he was fixing my bridge. I don't know if people who train animals talk like this all the time, but it's definitely a framework that makes sense to me.

Time:2:11 pm.
I had scheduled a Pilates session for 10 this morning, assuming I would wake up in time. I had trouble sleeping last night, and ended up waking up at 9:37! I haven't slept that late in...well, all week. I dressed quickly and drove like a madwoman. I ended up being less than 10 minutes late, which is pretty good, since I've had many days lately where I couldn't get dressed till the afternoon.

The session went fine, though I was a bit logy to start with. Afterwards, I stopped for breakfast tacos and coffee at a strip mall near my house. I like breakfast tacos (one of the reasons to live in Texas), but in general, I am not a fan of Mexican food--it is my least favorite cuisine. However, the food at Tacodeli is REALLY good. Fresh, well seasoned without being overpowering. I think they put crack in their tacos because they are incredibly addictive. There's a fairly good coffeeshop in the same strip mall, too. (They annoy me because I always have to ask for them to put out milk; it's never out. But the coffee is good.)

Even though I hadn't had food or coffee before Pilates, I feel better than I did last week. My trainer confirmed this by saying that I look better. While I'm still not WELL, I feel like I have passed some hump, which makes me optimistic. I can get my blood tested in another 12 days, and that will tell the story.

And maybe soon I can start emulating [info]lblanchard!

This morning, I had no ants in the living room. This evening, after reading [info]kightp's post about having sugar ants, they were swarming all over Nanook's catfood bowl. He merely ate around them. Luckily, the container is unaffected. And I'm afraid that some of those ants are fireants. I am not amused.

I cannot figure out where people get their kinks; I don’t think anyone can, but…

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why men doing green building/renovation on their own homes makes me relentlessly horny.

I’m not kidding.  I would blow Ed Begley, Jr. twelve times a day.  Men that I wouldn’t necessarily look at twice (particularly if they were driving Hummers or some such) suddenly become lust objects once any one of them says “recycled denim insulation” or “gray water reclamation.”

Watching Planet Green may count as an act of egregious perversion for me now.

I do feel, though, that the light bulb factory renovation in South Central Los Angeles smacks a little uncomfortably of gentrification.  Increasing the value of a distressed property by a half-million dollars — should the skinny, hairless guy decide to flip the property — does things to the values of the surrounding properties that make feel a little ooky.

But yeah, I still want to do the guy.  Doggy-style, backed up against his clay-finished non-off-gassing walls.

Subject:Cement failure
Time:5:37 pm.
My dentist said that about half the time, it's cement failure (like any structural failure), but the other half, there's something funky going on with the anchoring teeth. Mine seem to be fine, but we can't really tell.

He also said (and I know this will thrill you, [info]kightp!) that no dental work is permanent, even though his ego would like to think that his work would last forever.

*And* I got to meet his dog, Zoey, a blonde lab. Very, very sweet dog--I would adopt this dog in a minute, and I don't even like dogs. Most yellow labs are, well, yellow, but this one was very pale. Kinda the color I want my kitchen to be.

I also picked up my car. I think we've solved the problem, that it was the fuel pump relay soldering, because I ran several errands without problem. But, per [info]chakolate's advice, I noticed that Jerry had turned off the lights, and I usually drive with the lights on. Tomorrow, I will try driving with the lights on, and if I have a problem, then I'll turn the lights off!

I got my eyes checked again. My contact lens check took like 5 minutes. New scrip for the left eye, but I won't get those for another month or so. (I still have one set left.) My ophthalmologist can't make up his mind about my eyes. He *thinks* I have very early glaucoma. So he's going to test me every three months till I show signs. But the good news is that if he finds evidence of glaucoma, then he can do a laser treatment. He said he's been doing it for 3.5 years, and about 60-70% of his patients haven't had to have it redone in 3 years. The rest have to have it done again every year or two.

Despite the cement failure, I think today was a Good Day--I'm not completely exhausted.

Subject:This Is Not Right
Time:1:05 pm.
I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't read this myself. Police have arrested a woman who miscarried at 7 months and delivered a stillborn baby. At the time of delivery, doctors claim to have found the baby's umbilical cord had been severed before the birth. Based on that claim, the police are charging the mother with manslaughter. They claim that, at seven months pregnant, this woman somehow inserted a sharp object (a knife or scissors) through her  birth canal, into her own uterus and then, while reaching over her giant belly, managed to locate and cut the baby's umbilical cord. All this while doing no damage to herself. The only "proof" the police department has is the doctor's statement that the umbilical cord appeared to have been cut, and the fact that after she miscarried, the woman told her boyfriend that she was "sorry."  It seems more likely to me that the doctors are trying to cover up a mistake of their own.

So, instead of being comforted and taken care of, this poor woman has been put in jail.

One would assume that to prove the feasibility of his theory, during the trial District Attorney Chris Connolly will reach around a beachball and perform an intestinal polyp removal on himself.

It should be a piece of cake.

Subject:Central Park + Triangle
Time:10:20 am.
So I decided I should finally check out "The Triangle" and the "Central Park" by Central Market. So I biked over there, after first biking by the post office to drop off my netflix, and it's pretty crazy. There's a pond in between Central Market, The hospital, and those apartments over there. That wasn't too bad, but then I decided to bike a little bit north of that. It was insane. There were all these old buildings, and all the streets there had weird street names that were fake, but looked real. The creepiest thing about it was the fact that there was absolutely no one at all outside. So after a few minute of that insanity, I crossed 45th street into the "triangle". That place was pretty weird too. There was this band playing on the lawn sort by the middle, and there was only like four or five people listening to them. The triangle was a weird place. There's lots of parking garages, lots of apartments, and then some small, yuppie restaurants in the middle. At the north tip of the triangle, there's no crosswalks to cross the street. It seems like the triangle tries to isolate itself from the rest of Austin, ignoring the busy roads next to it. I would totally get cabin fever if I lived there.
Also, the ugly house being built to the west of me finally got a yard yesterday. Since I've lived in my new place, it's always had empty dirt yard, and then yesterday, they installed automatic sprinklers, grass yard, and some ferns or something. My yard has always had a large deadspot next to the curb where the grass gets direct sunlight. It never looked so bad until tomorrow where it was finally compared to another yard, instead of dirt. Maybe I should just use sod like my lazy neighbor did.....

Subject:Those annoying Democrats and their stupid party.
Time:10:00 am.
So one of those annoying Democrats from the Democratic National Collusion^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^HCommittee came to my house the other day asking for money to support Obama. It really annoys me how they assume that everyone is wanting Obama to be president. And I'm sure they assume that if you don't want Obama, then you must be a Republican. I told him the truth, I don't know who I'm going to vote for yet, and right now Obama isn't looking so good. If he was such a great guy, why would they be begging for money to push his lies? Remember that one time when Obama was a bush supporter? It wasn't that long ago, just a few days ago, he voted to give Bush immunity for violating the fourth amendment. I'm not sure if that law is legal or not, but either way, it shows how much of a snake in the grass Obama has become. Remember that one time when he was telling everyone that impeaching Bush was a bad idea? Yeah, that was Obama. The man everyone loves supporting his friend Bush, the man everyone loves to hate. Why can't people get out of this stupid concept that they have to become part of a party to vote for someone. Why can't we have decent candidates?

Subject:the world of podcasts
Time:9:46 pm.
Since I got an MP3 player a few weeks ago, I've been using it daily on my commute to work. Using it for what? I've been slowly exploring the world of podcasts. I feel a bit like I'm a day late to the party, since there's all this interesting stuff going on that I wasn't really aware of.

Software Engineering Radio is excellent, I'm learning about all sorts of goings-on within the development community that I'd previously only been aware of in passing. There are something over 100 episodes already, and I've downloaded them all and am working through them. The interviews are particularly interesting, where you get to hear from people like Joe Armstrong, the inventor of Erlang.

IT Conversations is a more eclectic mix of podcasts from many different publishers. I found this through stackoverflow, which is so far a mostly entertaining collection of conversations between Joel (of Joel on Software) and Jeff Atwood regarding their new programming community project. I've also listened to a couple of the Google Developer Podcast and it seems useful for finding out about new Google technologies but the jury is still out on that one.

For the cultural side I've also downloaded some French and Esperanto audio files (not quite podcasts per se) to try to improve my language listening skills. A long time ago I was reasonably capable in French, having studied it in school for five years. Radio France Internationale has a language learning section (langue française) which has various lessons and newscasts in simple French. It claims to be "français facile" (easy French) but apparently that only means limited vocabulary, not limited speed—it's seriously fast. I've got a lot of work to do if I'm going to improve my capability there.

Finally, in my usual style I have rolled my own podcast downloading program. It downloads the RSS feeds, finds new episodes, downloads their associated audio files, queues them up on local hard drive storage, then copies some of them to my MP3 player. I've set it up so it doesn't use more than a configurable amount of space per podcast, so I don't flood myself with 100+ hours of a single podcast. Then, after I listen to an episode I delete it on the player, so next time I run the downloader program it will add more of that podcast. Once I catch up by listening to all the old episodes, it will just copy new stuff as it appears.

Subject:Overall, a good day--and a BIG surprise!
Time:6:07 pm.
At first, I was unsure if today was a Good Day or not. I woke up at 7:15 this morning--poor Nanook! I usually let him out about 5-5:30, and then go back to bed for another REM cycle, but this morning, I have a sort of vague memory of screaming at him to get off me, and I didn't wake up till full light. I'm not sure what's going to happen tonight, because he's in the house now, sleeping, and I'm not going to let him out again.

HOLY CRAP! Forget about Good Day/Bad Day! My three front teeth just fell out!

Okay, it's a bridge, but it's all three teeth. I talked to my dentist, and he's going to glue it ack in tomorrow afternoon. He suggested I use toothpaste to glue it in the interim. I am not sure what I want to do tonight--I don't want to choke on it in my sleep. Gah. (I have had this for years--I got it done when I lived in California. It's actually a very nice piece of work. I remember going to get the color of my teeth matched.)

Jeeze. I can feel the adrenaline flowing through my body.

I had a soft taco with hunks of sirloin (called a Mexico City Taco) for dinner. I felt like food was getting stuck in the space between the bridge and my gum, and went in the bathroom to clean between there--that's when the bridge fell off. The bridge attaches to two teeth-stubs, and my dentist wanted to know if they were still intact. Eww. (I guess he deals with a lot of hockey players. Or victims of bar fights.) I can't wait till 2:30 tomorrow.

For a while I've had issues with not eating meat. Mostly because we've been so poor and meat is just.. well, cheaper. You can buy it in bulk and it'll last forever. Meat substitutes only come in boxes of 4 (that's two meals) and veggies only last so long.

But since Mel and I have been doing better, mostly since we've moved, being a vegetarian rocks.

In fact, recently we discovered the joy of MorningStar facon. Gods is it good. It crunches just right and has a smokey delicious flavor of bacon, without the meaty-ness of it. We had breakfast for dinner last night and gobbled down a whole pack of it between ourselves and Jordan. I picked up two more packages (even though we had one lurking in the freezer already) and made myself probably one of the most delicious lunches ever.

I craved the facon so bad that I searched for a reason to nibble on some for lunch. On the 4th of July my parents made me a veggie burger (Griller's Delight, tastes great!) from MorningStar and sent me home with the leftovers. I had one patty left so I decided I'd make a facon cheeseburger. I threw the patty in the oven and tossed some slices of facon in a pan. 20 minutes later I was chowing down on probably one of the best things I've eaten since rice pudding. It had the right flavor of cheese (no, not some fancy expensive oily cheese, regular ghetto cheese please) with the crunch of facon and the grill flavor of the burger patty. There was sweetness from a thin layer of ketchup and mayo and tartness from the mustard. I was in heaven! With a side of Zapp's jalapeno chips and a yogurt it was the best damn lunch ever.

I'm definitely going to have to make a burger night tonight. Since we do have a burger thawing in the fridge for Jordan. Muahahahaha.

A strange note about gymnastics class (at least I found this strange) -- there are way more guys than girls. 75% dudes. 25% girls. Also strange is that the dudes are really good and the girls really suck (me included). Even stranger yet, I'd say 80% of the guys, if not more, are straight.

Perplexing.

There is one guy who sucks as much as me, and by suck, we are actually beginners, not extreme snowboarders looking to improve our arial moves. In our second class, me, Shaggy, and my girl friend all were grouped together in the loser bunch. Shaggy looked around at the other people easily doing front handsprings, and asked, "is this a beginner class?"

It's not like we are all BFF (I still stick to my friend A like glue), but since we do get grouped together, we do end up talking or laughing at each other falling. Or sometimes we get paired together or have to share an apparatus.

Anyway, at the end of class yesterday, he came up to me and said, "has anyone ever told you you look like an actress?"

"Um...I guess...I get Shannon Dougherty or Angelina Jolie. (Shannon I can maybe see, although I'm not exactly happy about that, Angelina is a major stretch. I've also received Jessica Alba and Tia Carrere. The only commonality I have w/any of these actresses is that we are somewhat ethnic looking and we have brown hair)

"Have you heard of Summer Glau," Shaggy asked.
"Who?"
"Summer Glau"
"Summer who?"
"Look her up -- G-L-A-U -- you look just like her. I think you'll find she's much better than Shannon Dougherty.

This morning I googled her image:

Um...I guess? Brown hair? Check. Questionable ethnicity? Check.

This was just casual conversation between 2 people in the same gym class, right?

Good book

My Quick Review:

The witches are back in this installation of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, and this time they battle vampires. The real world undercurrent focused on in this book is the study of perhaps being too open minded, or on the other hand, not open-minded enough. Pratchett wraps these issues into a humorous story of the three witches reunited with the fourth witch, and the adventure that ensues. I would have liked to see a bit more of Granny, and a bit less of Agnes, as one of Pratchett's finest characters is Granny. Nevertheless, as a follow-up to a couple of Discworld novels that were not his finest, it appears Pratchett is tightening up his stories for the better.

Quotation:

“They see everything in black and white. That’s always a trap for the powerful. A mind that like is so easily…led.” (p17).

I miss rain. If I ever move to a new place, I want it to be somewhere that has more (but not constant) rain.

Subject:Kid detective series?
Time:8:07 pm.
A friend of mine asked me if I could remember a series about some children who were detectives. Not the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. I'm drawing a blank. Any ideas?

He's getting used to staying in with me at night while there's all that good hunting to do outside. He was livid when I snuck outside a few minutes ago to turn the sprinkler off and he discovered I was outside where he's not allowed at this time of day. Now he's very suspicious any time I leave a room he's in.

I put more catnip in his toy, but that just makes him violent. And the tradeoff is that he wakes me up at 3:30 wanting to go out. (The rule is that he can't go out till 5, but he can't tell time.) I may end up closing my door yet.

My ET is off to Washington tomorrow to pick up up 80 boxes of cookbooks and menus from a female former CIA agent.

I'm such an investing geek. I'm excited that my credit union is offering Step-Up Certificates of Deposit.

According to one website, "a Step-Up Certificate allows you to exercise a one-time option to reset the rate on your certificate account.  If during the initial term of your certificate, the rates offered by the Credit Union increase, you can reset the rate offered."

Different credit unions have different rules about the reset process, but the main idea is that if CD yields go up during the term of the certificate, it's possible to reset the yield on the certificate to reflect some or all of the increase. And I'm happy, because although my credit union only offers three year certificates, the certificates have a really good starting yield. Most credit unions offer three and five year terms, but the yield varies from credit union to credit union
