I want to hook up my line out audio into my telephone line.
What are you trying to accomplish?
Sending sound into the line? Create music on hold? Busy out your line?

Well, I could tell you how to build one, but I'll save you the time and expense and just tell you that it won't work without another piece of hardware.
Let me ask this another way.
Suppose you have some mp3. You want to send it down your phone line.
  • Who do you want to hear it? You? The other party?

  • When do you want them to hear it? While you're talking?

  • Is there a valid reason you're trying to accomplish this or does it just seem like a thing to do?

Oh well yeah you can let me know how to make one as well if you don't mind.. I have some knowledge in electronics so yeah..

Yeah mp3 down the phoneline for the other party while I'm able to talk.

I'm going to be doing this phoneline dj thing for some listeners :P

    thanks in advance.

Ok, first of all, you seem like a complete dumbfuck.
I told you it won't work. I didn't even tell you *why* it won't work. You need help making the by god simplest cord under the sun, but you say you have some knowledge in electronics
    You, sir, are a dumbfuck.
While normally I don't help dumbfucks, knowing that you're a dj makes your dumbfuck-ness seem normal, so whatever. Most dj's are dumbfucks.

ok, enough of my dumbfuck bashing

You can try and being cheap about this, but frankly speaking the tools are really the only "expensive" part of all this.

You'll need to go to two different stores.

The first is home depot. Pick up
  • some cat 3 or cat 5. Get a good...I dunno. 3 feet. It's about fifteen or twenty cents per foot, so go wild.

  • in the same aisle you'll find a package of mod ends. If you can't find 'em ask someone for rj-11's. They come in packs of 10.

  • the crimper for the same rj-11's. this'll probably set you back 15 or 20 bucks.

  • Now go to radio shack. Tell them that you want a quater inch mini plug. the non-solder type

This is all you need. In essence you'll peel off a few inches of the outer coating of the cat5. Inside there's 4 pairs of wires. Pick one color. It doesn't matter which, just remember which one it is. Untwist an inch or so of the wire and cut it evenly with a pair of sissors.
Put a mod end on it. It there's 4 connectors (little copper lines) use the inner two. Line the pair of wires up with the connectors, then crimp it down. You might need to practice, but you have 10 mod ends, so you're fine.
peel off a few inches of the other end of the cat5. Take the same color pair you were working with and untwist it.
Strip off the colored jacket from this end (you'll have bare copper wire).
On the mini jack you'll see some screws. Wrap the wires onto those screws and tighten.

tada. a cable that won't do what you want it to do.

For the record, I've made this same cable a few times, but it was going from an rj-11 input in a pbx and not a phone jack. The cable works, just not for what you've described.

Lets suppose you have some beer. You want to send it down your phoneline.

    IT COULD BE THE TELLEBEER!

Excuse me, Pur, lets not go talking about the new TeleBeer(tm) service.

There is more than one way to do things.

    telephony card
    Linux software
Just run a linux box, setup music on hold, place you're caller on hold and talk using another phone... ^_^
If you want too setup direct sound line into the phone line you're gona have too mangle a reciver for the electronics and hook you're mini din jack into the sound reciver part instead of a mic. I don't even know if that'll work.

2 bux. what the asshole said up top, but it could be a whole lot cheaper and easier. 1 buck for a fone cable and 1 buck for an rca cable. splice the two together, omfgeasy!@#

no joke. i'm sure someone will come up with a witty reason this won't work, or it may pose potential damagage to your electronics from the voltage down the line, but you can just straight splice the 2 wire sets together just fine. use to use it w/ a cheap stereo to either play music/clips down the line or plug it in the input to record.

the radioshack item begovich listed works great as well, and if you have a recorder control connection on either your oldschool or hifi stereo, or handheld recorder, the stereo will only record when someone picks up the line. you can also use this for a homemade speakerphone/line monitor.
