| Description: | Stargate SG-1 thingathon, second chances for killed-off and forgotten characters |
Welcome to the Stargate Second Lives Promptathon!
What if Charlie Kawalsky or Janet Fraiser had lived? What if Charlie O'Neill had lived? Or Jacob Carter and Selmak, or Martouf and Lantash, or Drey'auc or Shau'nac? Or Drey'auc and Shau'nac? What if Sha're returned from the dead, or Robert Rothman; what if Ambassador Joe survived the showdown with the Aschen and walked through the stargate one day?
This is a prompt-driven multi-media thingathon (fic, art [large size and icon size], vids) that focuses on giving a second chance to killed-off and forgotten Stargate SG-1 characters. (We haven't forgotten the forgotten characters! Raise your hand if you want to know how Nick Ballard fared with the giant aliens. And what Nyan is up to these days. Or Jonas Quinn! Or maybe you have an idea for healing the damage to Orlin's brain and bringing him back into play ... this will be a place for those kinds of stories too.) 'What if' is a core premise in science fiction, and fix-its are a staple of fanfic, and for all that we adore canon, there are times when you just want to fix the bejabbers out of it, or undo that one fatal event and see where it takes you.
We're very much about giving happy endings to characters who were deprived of them, and we're also very much about exploration, whether it leads to bright happy places or down darker, more shadowed byways. Bringing people across from quantum universes is fine, and so are completely quantum-universe-based fics, but we're most interested in more fundamental what-ifs: what if they hadn't died when they did in canon, what if they really came back. You can resurrect a whole world or an entire race if you want to -- bring back the Tollan, or descend the entire population of Abydos, or write about how Tegalus rose from the ashes of its self-annihilation and What Happened Then. Villains aren't off-limits, although the ptb are more likely to resurrect them and what we yearn for is our beloved favorites to have a second chance; but you can certainly prompt for and write things like what would have happened if movie O'Neil and Jackson dealt Ra a crippling blow but didn't actually kill him. And you can dig into the interstices of the timeline, too: in 'Moebius,' Katep reported that the rest of original Daniel's team had been executed, but ... what if they weren't?
We'll have a prompting period and then a posting period, and we expect to be doing this both in the spring and in the fall of 2009.
Fic requirements are easygoing: 500-word minimum length, no maximum length, no ratings or genre restrictions. We'll solicit for prompts -- words, scenarios, quotations, songs, pictures -- and then put up a (hopefully ginormous!) prompt post and have writers stake their claims. You can also write to your own, unposted prompt -- in other words, write and post the second-chances fic you feel like writing, whether you've been prompted for it or not.
We also welcome art and vids, inspired by the prompts or the resulting fics, or made with the artist's/vidder's own second-chances concept. We'll ask that icon-size art be useable as an LJ userpic (no more than 40k and 100x100 pixels), that large art go under a cut or be thumbnailed and linked, and that embedded vids go under a cut, and that's it! Artists and vidders will also need to stake prompt claims. We're separating icons from other art for the purposes of claiming and tagging. We know that icons are art too! If you want to make, say, a set of heavily tweened animated icons (i.e., 100x100 but much bigger than 40k), you'd stake that claim in Art, not in Icons. You won't have to make your icons shareable, but to keep things simple for us and for people trawling the comm for icons they might ask to use on LJ, the art submitted and tagged as Icons should meet the LJ userpic requirements.
For an art entry, you can make a collection of images or one image. For an icon entry, you can make one icon, a set of icons, one icon with variations (alternative crops, coloring, etc.). For vid entries, no length or other restrictions, no format restrictions, can be posted as embedded or a download link or both, and if you're inspired to make more than one vid in response to the prompt, of course that's fine too! For fic entries, anything from a set of five drabbles (to meet the 500-word minimum) to a novel is fine, including a set of related ficlets or fics.
You won't be required to post your content to the comm; a link to your journal entry will be perfectly acceptable. We'll ask that you include some basic information in a header, and we'll have templates for that available once the prompts are compiled and posted.
Requirements rundown:
- Leaving a prompt does not commit you to make fic/art/vids or participate in any other way. We're grateful for your prompt!
- If you're going to make something from a submitted prompt, you must stake a claim to the prompt.
- One claimant per prompt per medium.
- One claim per person per medium.
- You can claim a prompt in more than one medium (e.g., grab one to write a fic for and one to make icons for) -- all four if you're ambitious.
- If you're ambitious and fast *g*, you can claim the same prompt in all four media.
- Once you've posted your creation, you can claim another prompt in that medium.
- 500-word minimum for fic; icons should be no more than 40k and 100x100px; >40k icons (e.g. large-file animations) can post as art.
- During the open-posting period (March 26-April 9), you can post fic/art/icons/vids for an unprompted second-chance concept of your own devising.
- No requirement to post content to the comm if you'd rather keep it on your journal -- a linking entry with header info will be fine.
We're keeping this deliberately Stargate SG-1-oriented, but there's a lot of natural crossover between shows, and you'll be welcome to use Atlantis (and Universe) characters and settings, as long as the story focuses on SG-1 characters and/or takes an SG-1 scenario as a jumping-off point. Crossovers with other source material is OK too.
You'll need to join the community to post when posting time comes, but anyone can submit prompts. We'll be screening anonymous comments, but you can prompt anonymously if you want to and we'll unscreen everything legit. :-)
